Ashanti and Central Regions Roll Out Tree Planting Drives Under The Green Communities Initiative

The Department of Community Development’s Green Communities Initiative is gaining momentum nationwide, with the Ashanti and Central Regions launching large-scale tree planting exercises in line with the Deputy Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah's directive.

The coordinated activities mark the next phase of the initiative, which seeks to restore degraded landscapes, increase urban tree cover, beautify our communities and mobilize citizens around climate action at the community level, as enumerated by our National Director, Mr Stephen Blay.

The two regional drives are being carried out under the Department of Community Development’s Green Communities Initiative and follow the Deputy Minister’s directive to scale up participatory tree planting across all regions during the launch of the initiative in the Western Region on 18th June, 2026.

The Department of Community Development, under the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, actively participated in the National Clean-Up Exercise, in partnership with the KORLE klottey Municipal Assembly, and the leadership and members of the community.

This took place on Day 1 of the two-day programme at the Tema Station Lorry Station, in response to the directive by His Excellency the President John Dramani Mahama. Led by the National Director, Mr. Stephen Blay, the Department played a key role in mobilising community members and promoting strong community ownership.

The exercise involved desilting of gutters, sweeping of the surroundings, and education on proper waste disposal - all aimed at creating a cleaner, healthier, and safer environment for traders, commuters, and residents.

Staff of the Department also cleaned the National Headquarters and its surroundings - reinforcing the message that a clean environment begins with us, at home and at our workplaces.

We remain fully committed to initiatives that promote environmental sanitation and resilient communities.

At the launch of the Green Communities Initiative (GCI) by the Department of Community Development, the Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah (MP), charged all MMDCEs to integrate the GCI targets into their 2026–2029 Medium-Term Development Plans. She further stated that the performance of MMDCEs will be measured by tree survival rates and green spaces created in their respective districts. This will be supported by a Quarterly Green League Table.

GCI aims to reverse environmental degradation and build sustainable, resilient communities for current and future generations.
