The Young African Leaders Initiative Regional Leadership Center West Africa, Accra offers catalytic training to motivated young African leaders who innovatively tackle diverse issues in their communities. Nearly 1 in 3 Africans are between the ages of 10 and 24, and approximately 60 percent of Africa’s total population is below the age of 35. US Government launched YALI in 2010 to support young Af

rican leaders as they spur growth and prosperity, strengthen democratic governance, and enhance peace and security across Africa. REGIONAL LEADERSHIP CENTERS: The RLCs provide quality leadership training programs and professional development opportunities for young leaders on the African continent, and focus on engaging young African leaders from a wide range of organizations and backgrounds with a diversity of experiences. The Centers provide both long and short courses on leadership and issues across multiple sectors; provide entrepreneurship support services; and enhance networking. The Centers are each run as a public-private partnership, capitalizing on the energy and dynamism of the private sector, the knowledge of African and American institutions, and the programmatic and educational resources of the U.S.

Something exciting is coming for Africa’s next generation of business leaders…
We’re co-creating a bespoke program designed specifically for African youth-led businesses — built with you and for you.
Recently, we brought together a group of young entrepreneurs from across the continent to have an open and honest conversation about:

The real challenges of building and sustaining a business
The barriers to growth and scaling
The tools, support, and opportunities needed to succeed

You told us what matters. We listened.
Now, we’re turning those insights into a program that empowers, equips, and accelerates the growth of youth-led enterprises across Africa.
If you’re an African entrepreneur ready to take your business to the next level, this is for you.

For over a decade, programmes like YALI did something rare: they didn’t just train young Africans to lead — they walked with them into the arena of real influence.
Today, as flagship youth leadership programmes face closure or uncertainty, a quiet but dangerous gap is emerging. Not at the level of motivation or ideas — Africa has plenty of those — but in the “missing middle”: the bridge between leadership training and real power, scale, and sustainability.
What happens after the workshops end?
After the fellowships, the certificates, the applause?
Too many young entrepreneurs and civic leaders are being left without access to capital, mentorship, markets, or policy tables — at precisely the moment Africa’s demographic weight is rising fastest.
This isn’t just about funding cuts. It’s about continuity.
If we remove the ladder mid‑climb, we risk losing a generation of capable leaders to frustration, underemployment, or migration.
The challenge — and opportunity — now is clear:
Can African‑led models, investors, alumni networks, and development partners build what comes after YALI?
Because the future of African leadership won’t be decided at the starting line — but in how we support the next stage of the climb.

Youth STEP Africa exists to carry that momentum forward.
