The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has engaged the Management of the University of Ghana, Legon, to strengthen collaboration in addressing substance abuse and drug-related activities among students on campus.

The engagement, led by the Director-General of NACOC, Major General Maxwell Obuba Mantey, focused on practical measures to prevent the use, distribution and sale of illicit drugs within the university community, particularly among students.

The Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), Maj. Gen. Maxwell Obuba Mantey, has encouraged young people struggling with substance abuse, as well as their parents and families, to seek professional help early, stressing that recovery is possible.

Addressing young people at the National Youth Forum on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, the Director-General urged the youth to reject peer pressure and avoid experimenting with drugs.

“Try any drug? No. Drugs only destroy your future.”

He called on young people to rally behind NACOC and other stakeholders in the collective effort to address Ghana’s drug problem, emphasising that protecting the future of the youth requires their active participation.

"If you or someone you know is struggling with substance use, seek help early. Recovery is possible. Your future is worth protecting".

The Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), Maj Gen Maxwell Obuba Mantey, has reiterated the Commission’s firm commitment to collaborating with all key relevant state security agencies to ensure that points of entry and exit across the country are manned and safeguarded.

According to him, continuous collaboration is key to preventing the influx of all forms of nefarious activities such as drug trafficking along the borders of Ghana.

Maj Gen Mantey gave this assurance during a panel discussion at the 2026 edition of the West Africa Border Security Week held at the Labadi Pleasure Beach Hotel in Accra on Thursday, August 13, 2026, under the topic “Strengthening Border Security through Regional Cooperation and Innovation”.
“NACOC is well positioned to partner with managers of the border posts to tackle and control organised crime across the continent”, he added.

The NACOC Director-General stressed and called for the need to strengthen regional cooperation as one of the key principles that augments basic knowledge, intelligence sharing and an interoperable common system.

He indicated that the current and emerging trends of organised crime, especially drug trafficking activities, require trust and the improvement of sophisticated modern equipment to track down the operations of criminals.

“The operations of the various border posts can not only rely on the physical security infrastructure system, but require investment in key areas such as intelligence, forensic capabilities, technology, as well as strong collaboration”, Maj Gen Mantey noted
He called on the relevant stakeholders, including those manning the borders across the continent, especially Ghana, to pay close attention to the host communities along the border posts. Their extensive knowledge of the activities of these criminal groups is invaluable, as it is often beyond the reach of surveillance teams.

“It is important to note that criminal organisations do not recognise national boundaries to perpetrate their clandestine activities and call on all to support in curbing the menace through strong collaborative efforts”

Mr Solomon Stanley Eyo, the immediate past Director of Enforcement and Operations of the Narcotics Control Commission has admonished the youth of the Cape Coast Metropolis to abstain from engaging in illicit drug related activities in their endeavours.

According to him, refraining from such acts will enable them perform their respective activities in a healthy and useful manner.

Mr Eyo, made these remark when he attended opening ceremony of the Boys Brigade West African Regional Fellowship three-day Unity Camp meeting as Guest Speaker on Tuesday 12 August, 2026 in Cape Coast.

The event held at the Central Regional Police Church in Pedu was also attended by officers of the Central Regional Command.

He added that the abuse of drugs by the youth will serve as detrimental to their life and future aspirations. He therefore urged them to refrain from engaging in such acts.

"A healthy life will help advance the growth of the society and the nation at large" he stressed.

The President of the Boys Brigade Ghana, Lawyer Moses Foh Amoani, in his speech emphasized the importance of religion in shaping the future of the youth and holding on to the traditions of the Boys Brigade.

He commended the initiative aimed at bringing together the youth to be mentored and educated on the principles of being a responsible citizen and urged participants to adhere to the basic foundations that would help shape them to become good examples for all to emulate.

The event also witnessed an exhibition by the Regional Command which sought to display some educational materials by the Commission.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Aboboyaa Group of Companies, Nana Susubiribi Aboboyaa I, has donated two motorcycles to the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) to support the operational activities of the Commission’s Ashanti Regional Command.

The donation is aimed at enhancing the mobility and operational capacity of the Regional Command as it intensifies efforts to prevent and combat substance abuse and illicit drug activities in the Ashanti Region.

Presenting the motorcycles to the Director General of NACOC, Nana Susubiribi Aboboyaa I said the gesture was in recognition of the critical role played by the Commission in protecting communities, particularly the youth, from the harmful effects of substance abuse.

He noted that providing logistical support to the Commission would help strengthen its field operations and contribute to efforts to reduce substance abuse in the region.

Receiving the motorcycles on behalf of NACOC, the Director General expressed his appreciation to the CEO of Aboboyaa Group of Companies for the gesture and commended him for his commitment to supporting the Commission’s mandate.

The Director General said the donation would significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Ashanti Regional Command, particularly in areas requiring swift movement and field presence.

He subsequently handed over the motorcycles to the Deputy Commander of the Ashanti Regional Command and tasked the Command to ensure that the motocycles are properly maintained and put to effective use in support of NACOC’s operations.

The Commission further expressed its appreciation to Aboboyaa Group of Companies for the partnership and called on other individuals and organisations to support efforts aimed at building safer, healthier and drug-free communities across the country.

CENTRAL REGIONAL COMMAND HOLDS MEDIA WORKSHOP TO STRENGTHEN COLLABORATION IN THE FIGHT AGAINST DRUG ABUSE

The Central Regional Command of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) on 29th July 2026 organised a one-day workshop for media practitioners at the Central Regional Co-ordinating Council (RCC) Conference Hall, Cape Coast, to strengthen collaboration in the fight against illicit drug use and trafficking through preventive education.

The workshop brought together media practitioners from across the Central Region to enhance partnership between the media and NACOC in creating public awareness on the dangers of illicit drugs and promoting drug abuse prevention. The initiative forms part of the Commission's continuous efforts to reduce drug abuse through education, advocacy and community engagement.

Delivering a presentation at the workshop, the DNCO Alice Erzah, highlighted the dangers associated with illicit drug use and shared statistics on the prevalence and impact of drug abuse. The presentation underscored the health, social and economic consequences of drug misuse and stressed the need for sustained public education to discourage drug use, particularly among the youth.

In his closing remarks, the PNCO Felix Sarfo Yeboah summarised the key issues discussed during the workshop and emphasised the critical role of the media in supporting NACOC's preventive education campaign. He further urged the general public to refrain from the use of illicit drugs and encouraged media practitioners to consistently disseminate accurate information on the dangers of drug abuse to help protect lives and promote safer communities.

The workshop ended with an interactive discussion, during which participants expressed their commitment to collaborating with the Commission in advancing public education and awareness on drug abuse prevention across the Central Region.
