The Bono-East Regional Command (BERC) of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) on Wednesday, 06 May 2026, conducted a standalone enforcement and public sensitisation exercise at Akrofrom along the Techimanโ€“Wenchi stretch.

The exercise forms part of efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking within the Bono-East Region.

The operation targeted tricycles (Pragya and Aboboyaa), motorcycles, and commercial taxis suspected of transporting illicit substances concealed in sacks of charcoal.

Intelligence gathered by the Command identified the Techimanโ€“Kenten to Wenchi corridor as a known transit route increasingly being used by traffickers to move suspected cannabis and other narcotics.

The exercise, which was conducted between 0800 hours and 1120 hours by a seven-member operational team, involved stop-and-search activities, profiling of riders and drivers, and on-the-spot public education on the dangers and legal consequences of drug trafficking.

During the operation, approximately two hundred (200) tricycles, over one hundred (100) motorcycles, and five (5) taxis carrying charcoal were stopped, profiled, and searched.

In addition to the enforcement activities, officers engaged riders and drivers on the health and social dangers of substance abuse, particularly cannabis and tramadol, and educated them on the legal implications of transporting narcotic substances.

Transport operators were further encouraged to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious movements and activities.

The Bono-East Regional Command reaffirmed NACOCโ€™s commitment to sustained intelligence-led operations, public education, and inter-agency collaboration aimed at disrupting drug trafficking networks and protecting communities from the harmful effects of illicit drugs.

The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) of Nigeria, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to cooperate on timely information sharing among the two agencies. The MoU which was signed on the 5th May, 2026 at the National Headquarters of NDLEA, Abuja was witnessed by Dr. Gladys Mansa Yawa Feddy Akyea, the Deputy Head of Mission at the Ghana High Commission in Abuja, Nigeria.

In his brief remarks before signing the MoU, the Director General, NACOC, Brig Gen Maxwell Obuba Mantey, said Nigeria has consistently play the leading role in our sub region and Ghana holds that leadership in its highest regard. He remarked that the relationship between the two countries is deeply valued. The relationship he said is grounded in shared values, mutual respect, and common committed to peace and development across West Africa.

The drug situation across our sub region continues to evolve both in skill and complexity, and therefore no single country can effectively address this in isolation. He maintained that it is imperative to work together to dismantle the criminal organisations across West Africa.

Brig Gen Mantey said signing the MoU has brought a meaningful conclusion, making significant milestone towards deeper collaborations and a stronger partnerships between our sister agencies. He stated that the MoU must go beyond a symbolic gesture, but must translate into real measurable outcomes, stronger intelligence sharing, more coordinated joint operations, and structured training between our respective teams. He said the true value of this partnership will be defined not only by what we signed but what we implement.

He reassured that Ghana remains fully committed in working closely with Nigeria and other partners within the region to advance this vision.
He expressed his profound gratitude to the NDLA CEO/Chairman for his warm reception and generous hospitality extended to him and his delegation.

In his welcome remarks, the CEO/Chairman of NDLA, Brig Gen Mohammed Buba Marwa (Rtd), CON, OFR, acknowledged that the visit and the signing of the MoU is a testament in the long standing cooperation between our two nations and a clear signal that the bond between Nigeria and Ghana remains a cornerstone of regional security in West Africa.

He said the signing of the MoU is the formalisation of our partnership, and it provides the two agencies with legal and operational roadmap that moves our relationship from informal consultation to a structured, aggressive and unified front against drug traffickers.

He warned those who seek to destabilise our societies with illicit drugs that Nigeria and Ghana stand united and will continue to innovate, collaborate and dominate the tactical space until our streets and communities are safe
