The Ghana Boundary Commission is facilitating two separate bilateral meetings between Ghana, Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire this week in Wa. The separate bilateral meetings aim to harmonise and validate Legal Texts to govern the establishment and operationalisation of Local Groups for Cross- Border Cooperation (LGCBCs) between Ghana and the respective countries.

The initiative seeks to strengthen cooperation, promote dialogue and facilitate information sharing and joint action among communities and local government state and non-state actors along the common boundary in the Savannah and Upper West Regions.

Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner General, Major General Anthony Ntem, at the opening of the bilateral meeting between Ghana and Burkina Faso, the Deputy Commissioner General, Mr. Frederick Somuah Obeng, underscored the significance of the initiative in complementing the existing bilateral and regional mechanisms for cooperation between Ghana and Burkina Faso while bringing cross-border collaboration closer to the people directly affected by developments along the boundary.

The Ghana Boundary Commission and the National Boundary Commission of Côte d'Ivoire, in collaboration with the Multinational Maritime Coordination Centre (MMCC) Zone F, are set to conduct a Joint Inspection of the Ghana-Côte d’Ivoire International Maritime Boundary in the coming days. The inspection, which will cover 70 nautical miles of the common maritime boundary, forms part of the implementation of the 2017 ITLOS Ruling on the common maritime boundary. Earlier this week, all three stakeholders held a Final Maritime Inspection Planning Conference at the premises of the MMCC Zone F to finalise preparations towards the joint activity.

The Commissioner General of the Ghana Boundary Commission, Major General Anthony Ntem has held strategic discussions on matters regarding the management of Ghana’s International Boundaries with the Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service, Mr. Samuel Basintale Amadu, at the GIS Headquarters.

Receiving the Commissioner General, the Comptroller-General expressed appreciation to the Commission for its proactive engagements and continued support to the operations of the Immigration Service. He highlighted the positive impact of the Commission’s recommendations on Ghana’s boundary management and reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to working closely with the Commission to safeguard Ghana’s territorial integrity.

In response, Major General Ntem acknowledged the valuable support received from the Ghana Immigration Service, both through the secondment of a GIS officer to the Commission and during field operations. He underscored that the Commission and GIS are statutory and strategic partners whose mandates are closely linked in the effective boundary governance and management of Ghana’s boundaries.

He therefore called for regular engagements and stronger institutional collaboration to enhance coordination, information sharing and joint efforts towards the effective management of Ghana’s international boundaries.

As part of an operational assessment in the Kadjebi District, Nkwanta South Municipality and Nkwanta North District of the Oti Region this week, the Commissioner General of the Ghana Boundary Commission, Major General Anthony Ntem has held extensive engagements with the chiefs and community leadership of Ampeyoo, Ahamansu and Butabe. The first set of engagements, held at Dodi Papase in the Kadjebi District, discussed issues related to the integrity of the International Boundary Pillars, general security in the border communities and the socio-economic concerns of the border residents.

The Ghana Boundary Commission joined scores of Ghanaians today for the nationwide General Cleaning Exercise. Staff and management of the Commission, led by the Commissioner General, Major General Anthony Ntem, undertook clean-up operations in the Kanda Post Office general area, where they desilted choked gutters, cleared overgrown weeds, swept streets and removed refuse to help restore a clean and safe environment.

Ghana and Burkina Faso have concluded a series of bilateral engagements aimed at the joint reaffirmation and management of the common international boundary.

The engagements, which commenced on Monday 15 and climaxed Monday June 22, included the Meeting of the Joint Technical Committee for the Review of the Modalities and Roadmap for the Reaffirmation of the Common Land Boundary and the Meeting to Review the Framework for Consultation between the Savannah, Upper East and Upper West Regions of Ghana and the Djoro, Nakambe, Nando and Nazinon Regions of Burkina.

Both meetings culminated in the signing of official documents, the inauguration of a 22-Member Joint Technical Committee and the re-launch of the Reaffirmation of the international land boundary at Po in Burkina Faso.
