Official Statement from GRNMA-GAR

We bring you greetings from GRNMA-GAR, and we send our solidarity to the midwife who was assaulted by a client's relative at Community 22 Polyclinic.

This issue is very unfortunate and disgraceful to Ghana and its healthcare delivery. It undermines the provision of a safe workplace and the prevention of harm at work.

GRNMA stands in solidarity with her and with all midwives and nurses across Ghana. We assure you that the Association will go to the fullest extent to seek justice for the affected member.

For those individuals who are quick to accuse and blame nurses and midwives for every incident, below are the facts of the matter for your own judgment. The video in circulation speaks for itself. The midwife who was assaulted restrained herself and did not even touch the gentleman, yet some people are still trying to find fault with the midwives.

Facts of the issues.

1. The said patient underwent C/Section.
2. She was discharged Post Op Day 3 waiting to settle bills
3. Incident happened Post Op Day 4.
4. Patient relative came to visit after visiting hours while Midwife was attending to other patients and serving medications.
5. She informed the relatives of the visiting time and called the security to come and ensure order at the ward.
6. Relatives got angry why the midwife had to call the security for her to come and sack them.
7. Security left to other wards. While the insult was ongoing.
8. Midwife decided to leave and write in her Incident report.
9. One of the women struck her from her back asking why she had to walk away whiles they were talking to her.
10. The guy among them also got furious when she walked away.
11. The argument got heated and the results is what we see in the video.
12. The issue has been reported to the police
13. It is been proceeded to court on Monday
14. Midwife has been assessed and Counselled
15. District and Regional GRNMA Executives had been in constant touch with her since we saw the video online yesterday.

We assure all members to continue acting professionally and to work within a safe and secure environment. Your health and safety also matter as guaranteed by the Ghana Labour Act 2003 Act 651

Section 121 — Employee’s Right to Remove Herself from Danger
“A worker may remove himself or herself from a work situation which he or she has reasonable justification to believe presents an imminent and serious danger to his or her life or health.”
