Ghana Para Swimmer Promise Aheto Secures Qualification to the 2026 Commonwealth Games

Ghana Para Sports has made history with its first-ever qualification to the Commonwealth Games, secured by Ghanaian para swimmer Promise Wonder Atsu Aheto, who will compete at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, scheduled from 23rd July to 2nd August 2026.

Promise Aheto secured qualification through a bipartite slot following his classification and outstanding performance at the World Para Swimming (WPS) World Para Swimming Series in Australia in February 2026. At the competition, he recorded personal best times of 1:38.58 in the Men’s 100m Breaststroke S9 and 31.72 in the Men’s 50m Freestyle S13, qualifying him to compete in either event at the Commonwealth Games.

This historic achievement marks a major milestone for Ghana Para Sports and highlights the growing progress of para sports development in Ghana through collaboration and institutional support.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Mr. Richard Akpokavie, the Chef de Mission for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Madam Farida Ayishatu Idriss, the President of Ghana Para Swimming, and the leadership of the National Paralympic Committee of Ghana, including Mr. Samson Deen, Mr. Henry Larbi, and Mr. Majeed Eldeen, for the administrative and financial support provided to Promise Aheto and his teammate during the World Para Swimming Series in Australia, which contributed significantly to securing this historic qualification.

Ghana Para Sports remains committed to supporting athletes with disabilities to achieve excellence on the international stage and proudly represent Ghana at major global competitions.

Ghana Sends Para Powerlifting Team to 2026 Commonwealth Games GAP Training Camp

Accra, Ghana – The National Paralympic Committee of Ghana (NPC Ghana) is proud to announce the departure of Para Powerlifting athlete Tahiru Haruna and coach Prince Nyarko to represent Ghana at the 2026 Commonwealth Games GAP Training Camp in Stellenbosch, South Africa.

The team departed from Kotoka International Airport and is expected to return on 29th March 2026 after completing an intensive training and competition programme designed to prepare athletes for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

This prestigious camp, organized under Commonwealth Sport in collaboration with Stellenbosch University, brings together elite para athletes, coaches, and officials from across Africa. It forms a key part of preparations toward the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Tahiru Haruna, who has already qualified to represent Ghana at the Games, will benefit from high-performance training sessions scheduled from 20th to 26th March 2026, followed by a competitive phase from 27th to 28th March 2026. These sessions will enhance his technical readiness, strength conditioning, and competitive exposure ahead of the global event.

The successful participation of Team Ghana in this camp has been made possible through the strong collaboration between NPC Ghana and the Ghana Olympic Committee. As a member of the Commonwealth Games Federation, the Ghana Olympic Committee played a vital role in securing Ghana’s slot for para athletes at this important preparatory camp.

Participants will be hosted in Stellenbosch, where training, accommodation, and welfare support—including medical and safeguarding services—have been arranged to ensure optimal athlete performance and well-being.

NPC Ghana extends its heartfelt appreciation to all partners and stakeholders whose contributions have made this opportunity possible.

We wish Tahiru Haruna and Coach Prince Nyarko the very best in this important phase of preparation and look forward to their success at the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
