The Ghana National Cleaner Production Centre of the Environmental Protection Authority (GNCPC-EPA), in collaboration with United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry (MOTAI) conducted a two-days training on Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production and Energy Audit Principles.

The training was organized on June 10th and 11th, 2026 to build the capacity of MSMEs and government Institutions including Wilmar Africa, B5 Plus Alloys Co. Ltd, Atlantics Lifesciences Ltd, Cephas Exports Ltd, Safasco Ventures, Yedent Agro Ltd, MEST, GSA, FDA, Energy Commission just to mention a few.

Day 1 of the training covered lessons on:
- Legal Framework on Environmental Management
- Introduction to Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production
- Circular Economy

The presentations on Day 2 covered :
- Ghana’s Energy Policy and Regulatory Framework
- Introduction to Energy Audit
- Energy Data Collection, Performance indicators & Baseline Setting
- Energy Audit in Practice

The workshop provided the MSMEs and Government institutions present with practical knowledge and tools to adopt resource-efficient and cleaner production practices in their respective institutions.

Ghana’s commitment to environmental safety and public health has taken a major step forward following a strategic meeting between the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority

While the two institutions have collaborated over the years on chemical regulation and border control, this latest engagement sought to establish a more structured and coordinated framework for cooperation. Central to the discussions were growing concerns surrounding the importation, transportation, and management of hazardous chemicals.

To address these risks, both institutions agreed on measures to strengthen enforcement and enhance Customs’ Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS).

The meeting marks a significant step towards modernizing Ghana’s regulatory systems and leveraging technology to safeguard public health and protect the environment.

As part of the 2026 World Oceans Day celebrations, the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), in collaboration with the Convention on Wetlands and the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission, paid courtesy visits to the Paramount Chief of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Area, Awulae Blay IX, and the Paramount Chief of the Western Nzema Traditional Area, Awulae Kwesi Amakyi III, on June 10, 2026.

The purpose of the visits was to seek their endorsement and support for the designation of the Amanzule Wetlands as Ghana’s 7th Ramsar Site under the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention).

The chiefs expressed their appreciation for the initiative and reaffirmed their commitment to the protection and sustainable management of the Amanzule Wetlands. They emphasized the importance of safeguarding wetlands and marine ecosystems, and called for renewed efforts to reduce pollution and preserve these vital natural resources for future generations.

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, the Forestry Commission, and Hɛn Mpoano, organised the 2026 World Oceans Day celebration at Maaha Beach Hotel on 09 June 2026. The event aimed to raise awareness on the need to protect marine ecosystems, with particular emphasis on the proposed declaration of the Amanzule Wetlands as Ghana’s seventh Ramsar site.

The programme was graced by Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, Minister responsible for Environment, Science and Technology; Dr Musonda Mumba, General Secretary of the Convention on Wetlands; Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse, Chief Executive Officer of the EPA; and Hon. Joseph Agyekum, District Chief Executive of the Ellembelle District Assembly.

Activities marking the day included cultural performances, exhibitions showcasing the Amanzule Wetlands by Hɛn Mpoano, and the presentation of awards to schools that participated in art works and related environmental activities.

The EPA has commenced stakeholder engagements on the implementation of the nationwide ban on polystyrene foam products, popularly known as Styrofoam, which takes effect on 1st January 2027.

The engagements, which began on 3rd June 2026, forms part of a broader nationwide education and consultation process to ensure a smooth transition ahead of the ban. Key stakeholders engaged include the Association of Ghana Industries, Food and Beverage Association of Ghana, Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Plastic Manufacturers Association, Hoteliers Association of Ghana, Ghana Standard Authority, Food and Drugs Authority, Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, and the Ghana Revenue Authority (Customs Division).

These initial consultations mark the beginning of a series of engagements that will be intensified in the coming months to support compliance, strengthen enforcement preparedness, and promote sustainable alternatives.

This World Environment Day, EPA carried out educational outreach and awareness programs in schools to inspire environmental action among the younger generation. The theme, *“Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”* came to life as students actively participated in tree-planting activities and learned how small actions can contribute to a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future for all.

The initiative highlights EPA’s commitment to environmental stewardship and demonstrates the power of collective responsibility in protecting our environment.

The offices involved included Tumu, Savanna Regional Office, Volta Regional Office, Kumasi, Mampong, Konongo,Drobonso, and Ahafo.
