🚙 Three Vehicles Handed Over to Strengthen RMNCAHN Services in Ghana

On 2 September, three vehicles were officially handed over to the Ghana Health Service (GHS) as part of the “Improving Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, Adolescent Health and Nutrition (RMNCAHN) Service Delivery by Strengthening the Networks of Practice (NoP) in Ghana” project.

Supported by the Government of the Republic of Korea through KOICA, the vehicles have been allocated to the Central, Eastern, and Ashanti Regions. They will support field officers and regional teams in carrying out supervision, monitoring, coordination, and community outreach activities, ultimately contributing to stronger primary healthcare delivery in the beneficiary areas.

At the handover, KOICA Ghana Country Director Mr. D**g Wan Woo reaffirmed the Republic of Korea’s commitment to improving healthcare outcomes in Ghana through sustained partnership. He highlighted the role of the vehicles in facilitating essential project activities at the regional, district, and community levels and encouraged the beneficiary regions to utilize them effectively to advance the objectives of the RMNCAHN NoP project.

GHS Director-General Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea emphasized the importance of operational sustainability, effective resource management, and local ownership. He also reaffirmed GHS’s commitment to maintaining the vehicles so they can provide long-term support to field teams and healthcare delivery.

As the project’s procurement partner, UNICEF supported the procurement of the three vehicles. Procurement of additional essential medical equipment and supplies for health facilities in the target regions is also being finalized as part of the project.

Through the RMNCAHN NoP project, Korea and Ghana continue working together to strengthen frontline health services and help ensure that quality healthcare reaches mothers, newborns, children, adolescents, and communities where it is needed most.

🌍 Savannah Regional PHEOC Officially Inaugurated to Strengthen Emergency Preparedness and Response

On 1 September, the Savannah Regional Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC) was officially inaugurated in Damongo to strengthen the region’s capacity to prepare for, detect, coordinate, and respond to disease outbreaks and other public health emergencies.

Supported by the Government of the Republic of Korea through KOICA under the “Increasing Health Security Capacities through the Global Health Security Agenda (2nd Phase)” project, the centre will serve as a regional hub for coordinating emergency operations, managing and analysing health information, facilitating communication, and supporting rapid decision-making.

In her remarks, KOICA Ghana Deputy Country Director Ms. Boyeong Choe described the inauguration as an important milestone for both the Savannah Region and Ghana’s broader public health emergency preparedness efforts. She emphasized that the centre represents an investment in decentralized health security, while stressing that its impact will depend on sustained operation, continuous staff training, and regular testing of emergency response procedures.

Dr. John Ekow Otoo, Savannah Regional Director of Health Services, explained that the PHEOC will serve as the region’s “nerve centre” for public health emergencies. Through continuous monitoring and analysis of health data, the centre will support early detection and rapid response, while bringing relevant institutions together under the One Health approach to share information, resources, and coordinate action.

Hon. Salisu Yussif Biawurbi, Savannah Regional Minister, emphasized that the inauguration represents the establishment of a coordinated emergency response system rather than merely the opening of a physical structure. Highlighting the region’s particular need for vigilance against emerging health threats, he formally declared the Savannah Regional PHEOC open.

Through continued partnership, the Government of the Republic of Korea, KOICA, and the Government of Ghana are working to strengthen early detection, coordination, and rapid response for a more resilient public health system.

🌍🎓 2026 KOICA Youth Leaders Program – Private Sector On-site Training Successfully Completed!

On 28 August, the 2026 KOICA Youth Leaders Program (Private Sector) On-site Training concluded with a Completion Ceremony at GIMPA, marking the successful end of two weeks of intensive learning, exchange, and networking.

A total of 107 young entrepreneurs from Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Senegal, and Cameroon successfully completed the training, building new knowledge, skills, and networks to support their growth as emerging private sector leaders.

During the ceremony, KOICA Ghana Country Director Mr. D**g Wan Woo congratulated the participants and emphasized the important role that young leaders and the private sector have in shaping Africa’s future. He encouraged them to take the ideas and inspiration gained during the program beyond the classroom and translate them into concrete action and meaningful results.

GIMPA Deputy Rector Prof. Ebenezer Adaku highlighted the growing importance of technology and digital capabilities, encouraging the participants to continuously strengthen and actively apply these skills to enhance productivity as future leaders.

Mr. Olufemi Adewumi, Programs Director at MEST Africa, emphasized the value of the connections built during the program and encouraged participants from the five countries to maintain their networks, support one another’s growth, and create new opportunities together.

Representatives from the participating countries also reflected on their shared two-week journey and called on their peers to use the knowledge and experiences gained through the program to create positive change in their communities.

Prof. Byungchun Kim, Director of the HDP-Nexus Research Center at Hallym University, together with Mr. D**g Wan Woo, presented certificates to the participants in recognition of their successful completion of the private sector training.

As the 107 participants return to their respective countries, the program leaves them with a shared responsibility: to transform their knowledge, ideas, and networks into practical solutions and opportunities that contribute to Africa’s development.

🌍 Strengthening Ghana’s Public Health Emergency Preparedness

On 21 August, strategic documents and a national roadmap for the establishment, operation, and phased development of Public Health Emergency Operations Centres (PHEOCs) across Ghana were officially launched.

The initiative is supported by the Government of the Republic of Korea through KOICA under the “Increasing Health Security Capacities through the Global Health Security Agenda (2nd Phase)” project. It aims to strengthen Ghana’s capacity to prepare for, coordinate, and respond effectively to public health emergencies by providing a strategic framework for the development and operation of PHEOCs across the country.

In his remarks, KOICA Ghana Country Director Mr. D**g Wan Woo** reaffirmed Korea’s continued support for Ghana’s public health sector and emphasized that effective emergency preparedness is a shared responsibility requiring strong multisectoral collaboration. He described the launch as an important beginning of the next phase—turning strategic plans into sustained implementation and ultimately contributing to a more resilient health system and stronger global health security.

Delivering welcome remarks on behalf of the Director of Public Health, Dr. Kwame Amponsa-Achiano, Deputy Director for Disease Control, underscored the importance of strengthening systems and coordination to ensure Ghana is better prepared to respond to public health emergencies.

Dr. Lawrence Lartey, Head of the National PHEOC, presented a detailed technical overview of the framework and roadmap, explaining how the documents will guide the establishment, operation, and progressive development of PHEOCs nationwide.

With the roadmap now in place, the focus moves from planning to implementation. KOICA remains committed to working with its partners to help translate these strategies into stronger preparedness, more effective coordination, and a resilient public health system for Ghana.

🎓✈️ **Preparing for a New Academic Journey in Korea**

On **17 August**, KOICA Ghana held a **Pre-Departure Orientation** for KOICA Scholarship Program participants who will soon begin their studies at **Korea University, Seoul National University, Ewha Womans University, and Hanyang University** in the Republic of Korea.

During the orientation, **KOICA Ghana Country Director Mr. D**g Wan Woo** encouraged the participants to approach their time in Korea with an open mind. He emphasized that the experience would not only provide opportunities for academic growth, but also allow them to build genuine friendships with people from diverse nationalities and cultural backgrounds.

**KAAG President Ms. Lovia Afoakwa** wished the participants a healthy and rewarding stay in Korea and expressed her hope that they would successfully complete their studies and return home safely.

The program also included a **knowledge-sharing session led by KOICA alumni**, providing participants with practical insights based on firsthand experience.

**Mr. Mawuli Cyril Lavoe**, a KAAG member, shared his experience of the KOICA degree program and settling into life in Korea, offering practical advice for successful academic and daily life.

**Ms. Gertrude Akuamoah, Secretary of KAAG**, introduced examples of how returning alumni continue to share their knowledge and contribute after completing their studies. She also offered useful guidance on cultural differences between Korea and Ghana, including public etiquette and everyday life in Korea.

On 14 August, the 2026 KOICA Youth Leaders Program (Public Sector) On-site Training concluded with a Completion Ceremony at GIMPA, marking the end of two weeks of intensive learning, exchange, and networking.

A total of 91 young public officials from Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and Cameroon successfully completed the training, strengthening their capacities in leadership, policy development, AI, and digital transformation.

During the ceremony, KOICA Ghana Country Director Mr. D**g Wan Woo congratulated the participants on completing the program and encouraged them to apply the knowledge they had gained in their respective countries while maintaining and expanding the professional networks established during their time together.

GIMPA Deputy Rector Prof. Ebenezer Adaku described the program as an important investment in Africa’s future and highlighted the importance of quality leadership in advancing the continent’s development.

Representatives from the participating countries also shared reflections on their two-week journey, celebrating what they had achieved together and encouraging their fellow participants to actively embrace their roles as leaders of today and contribute to positive change.

🌍 2026 KOICA Youth Leaders Program Officially Begins in Ghana

On 3 August, the Opening Ceremony of the 2026 KOICA Youth Leaders Program (Public Sector Track) was held at Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

The program brings together 200 young leaders from Ghana, Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal, and Cameroon, who will participate in intensive training from 2 to 29 August 2026. The first two weeks are dedicated to 100 public sector participants, who will receive training in leadership, policy development, artificial intelligence, and digital transformation.

In his remarks, H.E. Park Kyongsig, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Ghana, encouraged participants to use the knowledge and experience gained through the program to become leaders of change and contribute to the sustainable development of their countries.

Dr. Evans Aggrey Darkoh, the Head of the Office of the Head of Civil Service (OHCS) congratulated participants on being selected for the prestigious program and emphasized that it offers an important opportunity to strengthen leadership capabilities, exchange best practices with peers from across the region, and build lasting professional networks that will contribute to public sector innovation and Africa's sustainable development.
