For a newborn in distress, the right care at the right time can make all the difference.

Through Australia’s Direct Aid Program, we supported the Mental Health and Well-Being Foundation to establish a well-equipped Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Ketu South Municipal Hospital in Aflao.

The project strengthened local health infrastructure and improved the hospital’s capacity to provide specialised care for newborn babies in Ketu South and surrounding communities.

It is one example of how Australia works with local partners to support practical solutions that improve health and wellbeing in Ghana.

A rules based international order is strongest when African voices help shape it.

That message was at the heart of CDD Ghana’s public lecture delivered by former Ghanaian Foreign Minister and UN Special envoy for Libya, Hanna Serwaa Tetteh.

The discussion explored how stronger institutions, inclusive governance and regional cooperation can help Ghana and Africa respond to global uncertainty.

H.E. Tetteh also highlighted the importance of turning policy commitments into action and using Ghana’s strategic position, including through AfCFTA, to advance regional trade and development.

Australia values Ghana’s perspective and supports an international system that advances peace, stability and shared prosperity.

What does a typical Australian story look like?

In Button Pusher, it looks like an African hair salon in Western Sydney, where a broken air conditioner sets the scene for a story about trust, friendship, love and betrayal.

Directed by Somali Australian filmmaker Miski Omar, the short film captures the diverse and colourful voices of contemporary Australia and the many communities shaping Australian storytelling today.

The film opened the eighth Accra Indie Filmfest at Alliance Française in Accra earlier this week, where Second Secretary Tiffany Yan delivered remarks on behalf of the Australian High Commission.

As a Chinese Australian, Tiffany reflected on her own connection to Australia’s multicultural character and on the power of film to carry stories across cultures, challenge assumptions and bring people closer together.

Australia is proud to have supported the Accra Indie Filmfest over several years, helping Australian stories find new audiences in Ghana while strengthening the creative and people to people links between our two countries.

It’s great to see broad consultation happening as part of the Africa-Australian Partnership.

Researchers recently joined field activities in Ghana’s Northern Region as part of a Livestock Systems Scoping Study being developed by Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research – ACIAR, and implemented with Participatory Development Associates and Ghanaian government partners.

The visit engaged livestock farmers, extension officers, research institutions, public livestock facilities, private sector actors and digital advisory providers across Savelugu, Sagnarigu, Tolon and Nyankpala. Discussions focused on livestock production constraints, advisory services, feed and water challenges, animal health, gender dynamics and opportunities to strengthen livestock research and development investments in Ghana and Nigeria.

Key insights highlighted the need for practical advisory support on feed formulation and animal health, stronger institutional support for livestock breeding and research, and sustainable approaches to digital advisory platforms that can complement conventional extension systems.

The scoping study will help inform future research priorities and partnerships aimed at improving livestock productivity, resilience and livelihoods across West Africa.
