NITA honours AMA for excellence in data management practices

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has been honoured by the National Information Technology Agency (NITA) for excellence in data management practices.

The award recognised the AMA’s commitment to effective data management and the application of technology to improve institutional efficiency and service delivery.

The award was presented on Friday, August 21, 2026, at the 2026 National ICT Week Dinner and Awards Ceremony held at The Underbridge, East Legon, as part of activities celebrating outstanding contributions to Ghana’s information and communications technology sector.

The event, held under the theme “Innovation at Scale”, brought together key stakeholders, ICT professionals, innovators, and personalities from the technology and creative sectors to celebrate achievements that contributed to the growth and development of Ghana’s digital ecosystem.

Court fines six drivers, mates GH¢1,680 for charging unapproved fares in Accra

The La Motor Court has fined six commercial transport operators, a total of GH¢1,680, for charging passengers above the approved fares.

The six, comprising three drivers and three bus conductors, popularly known as “mates,” were fined on Thursday (27th August 2026) after they were put before the court following their arrest during an Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) enforcement exercise led by Director of Operations, Mr. Mohammed Banda in the Central Business District (CBD).

Following their conviction, Francis Morgah, Foster Osei, Benjamin Ofori Atta, Emmanuel Aduafo and Emmanuel Paa Ekow Amissah were each fined GH¢300, equivalent to 25 penalty units, while Joseph Bonney was fined GH¢180, equivalent to 15 penalty units.

The six were convicted in line with Clause 19(f) of the AMA (Operation of Commercial Vehicles) Bye-laws, 2017, which prohibits commercial drivers from charging more than fares prescribed and approved by the Assembly in consultation with representatives of the major transport operator unions.

The court action followed a recent warning by the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, that the Assembly would clamp down on commercial transport operators who exploited commuters through arbitrary fare increases, particularly during peak periods.

AMA arrests six drivers, mates over unapproved fares in Accra CBD

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has arrested six commercial transport operators in the Central Business District (CBD) for allegedly charging passengers fares above the approved rates to Awoshie, Kasoa and Madina.

The six, comprising three drivers and three bus conductors, popularly known as “mates,” were arrested on the evening of Tuesday, August 25, 2026, between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. during an enforcement exercise by the Assembly, following a warning by the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey against arbitrary fare increases by some commercial transport operators in the city.

The arrests were carried out in line with clause 19 (f) and (d) of the AMA (Operation of Commercial Vehicles) By-laws, 2017, which prohibits a driver of a commercial vehicle from charging more than the fares prescribed and approved by the Assembly in consultation with representatives of the major transport operator unions and making passengers alight along a journey and re-board the same vehicle in order to charge separate fares for different stretches of the trip respectively.

The drivers arrested were Joseph Bonney, Francis Morgah and Foster Osei, while the bus conductors were Benjamin Ofori Atta, Emmanuel Aduafo and Emmanuel Paa Ekow Amissah.

AMA, DVLA demonstrate installation of reflective stickers on tricycles ahead of safety enforcement

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in partnership with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), has demonstrated the proper installation of reflective stickers on tricycles (Aboboyaa and Pragya), as well as the use of reflective jackets and protective helmets by riders, ahead of the Assembly’s end-of-August compliance deadline.

The demonstration, which formed part of measures to improve the visibility of tricycles and reduce road crashes in the capital, was held on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, under the auspices of the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo.

The Minister, in an interview, said the enforcement exercise after the deadline would not be limited to the Accra Metropolitan area but would be extended across all 29 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region.

She appealed to tricycle riders to comply with the safety directive by the end of the month, stressing that the measures were intended primarily to protect their lives.
