AMA removes unauthorised makeshift structures being rebuilt at Kofikrom to make way for block housing

The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has led a team of security personnel and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Task Force to remove unauthorised structures being rebuilt at Kofikrom, a squatter settlement in Avenor within the North Industrial Area, after a recent devastating fire.

The structures, consisting of upright wooden posts, horizontal beams, and supporting braces, were erected in rows, with some partially enclosed using wooden planks, while most remained unroofed.

The operation was aimed at preventing the reconstruction of wooden structures in the area to facilitate the redevelopment of the community with permanent block buildings and essential social amenities.

Speaking during the exercise, the Mayor expressed disappointment over the decision by some of the squatters to disregard earlier directives and reconstruct temporary wooden structures despite assurances that permanent block buildings would be provided under a planned redevelopment project.

Hon. Allotey warned the squatters to desist from erecting any new structures in the area stressing that the Assembly would not allow the proliferation of unauthorised wooden structures, particularly in an area where a previous fire outbreak had resulted in the loss of lives and destruction of property.

The Mayor announced that plans were underway to construct permanent block buildings for the affected residents as part of efforts to improve their living conditions and prevent a recurrence of the disaster.

He said contractors had already been deployed to the site to undertake measurements and other preliminary activities ahead of the commencement of construction works.

According to him, the development would include the provision of electricity, borehole water supply and streetlights, which would be made available free of charge to enhance the comfort, safety and well-being of residents.

He further announced that a tarred one-way access road would be constructed within the community to improve accessibility, facilitate the movement of vehicles and ensure unrestricted access for emergency response services.

The Mayor noted that the proposed interventions were intended to transform the settlement into a more organised and safer residential environment while addressing the infrastructural challenges that had previously exposed residents to fire outbreaks and other hazards.

AMA holds management meeting to review key priority actions towards updating CAP, targets zero emissions by 2050

Management of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has met to review key recommendations and priority actions for updating the city’s Climate Action Plan (CAP) and integrating them into its development plans.

The meeting, which constituted the second major activity towards updating the Climate Action Plan, followed the signing of a Climate Commitment Statement by the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, to reaffirm the city's commitment to addressing climate change and achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Discussions focused on aligning climate interventions with departmental mandates, identifying opportunities for implementation through annual work plans and budgets, and strengthening coordination among departments to support the achievement of the Assembly's climate commitments.

The updated plan, expected to cover the period from 2026 to approximately 2035, sought to provide a long-term framework for coordinating climate change interventions, mobilising resources and integrating climate considerations into the Assembly's development planning, budgeting and implementation processes.

The engagement also examined priority climate interventions, identify opportunities for mainstreaming them into departmental programmes and establish institutional responsibilities for their implementation and monitoring.

Speaking during the engagement, the Deputy Director of Waste Management at the AMA, Mr Victor Kotey said Accra's membership of C40 Cities, a global network of cities committed to tackling climate change, required the Assembly to update its climate action framework to reflect emerging environmental challenges and development priorities.

Mr Kotey indicated that the Assembly was considering a longer-term Climate Action Plan covering approximately 10 years, from 2026 to 2035, to guide the implementation of climate interventions across the metropolis.

Mr Kotey explained that mainstreaming climate actions into departmental work plans would enable the Assembly to make the necessary budgetary provisions and mobilise financial resources to support the implementation of identified interventions.

He noted that the approach would also promote institutional ownership of climate actions and ensure that departments and units contributed directly to the achievement of the city's long-term climate objectives.

In his closing remarks, the Head of Development Planning at the AMA, Mr Richard K. Oduro stressed the importance of collaboration and continuous engagement among departments to ensure the successful mainstreaming of climate change interventions into the Assembly's planning and development processes.

Mr Oduro emphasised that effective mainstreaming would require increased awareness, continuous collaboration, and a commitment by all departments to ensure that identified climate priorities were translated into practical actions.

The ongoing review of the Climate Action Plan forms part of the AMA's efforts to strengthen its institutional response to climate change, improve coordination and resource mobilisation, and provide a long-term framework for implementing climate interventions in pursuit of the city's net-zero emissions target for 2050.

AMA educates students on proper handwashing to prevent diseases

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has organised a health education programme for students at Holy Trinity Cathedral Senior High School (HOTCASS) in Accra to promote proper handwashing practices and prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

The programme, held on Thursday, October 15, 2026, through the Public Health Department of the Assembly, in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service (GHS), to commemorate Global Handwashing Day, formed part of efforts to strengthen personal hygiene practices among young people and encourage behavioural change towards disease prevention.

The forum featured practical demonstrations and interactive sessions designed to equip students with knowledge of effective handwashing techniques, the importance of using soap and clean running water, and the critical moments when handwashing was necessary.

After the forum, the Head of the AMA Public Health Department, Madam Florence Kuukyi, stressed the importance of regular, proper handwashing as one of the simplest and most effective measures for preventing communicable diseases.

She said the Global Handwashing Day, observed annually on October 15, was established in 2008 to raise awareness of the importance of handwashing with soap and encourage individuals, institutions, and communities to adopt good hygiene practices.

AMA appeals for help to reunite 65-year-old woman found at Kaneshie with family

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has appealed to the general public to help trace the relatives of a 65-year-old woman identified as Aba Esi, who was found missing at Kaneshie in Accra with a severe wound on her left leg.

The elderly woman, who is currently undergoing medical treatment as efforts intensify to locate her family and ensure she receives the necessary care and support was found loitering at Kaneshie on Saturday 3rd October 2026.

Head of the Assembly's Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, Mrs. Felicia Amoakohene said the woman's condition raised concerns about her welfare, prompting an appeal to the public to assist in identifying her relatives.

She urged the public to circulate information about the woman widely, particularly through social media and community networks, to increase the chances of reaching someone who might recognise her.

She was hopeful that the collective efforts of the public would help reconnect Aba Esi with her loved ones while calling on anyone with information about the woman or her relatives to contact the AMA's Department of Social Welfare and Community Development on 024 185 6401 or 024 250 2497.

AMA evacuates illegally dumped refuse along Graphic Road, warns against indiscriminate dumping

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has evacuated heaps of refuse illegally dumped along Graphic Road to improve sanitation and maintain a clean and healthy environment across the metropolis.

The refuse, which had been collected into sacks and abandoned along the roadside by unidentified persons, had accumulated at the location, creating an unsightly environment and posing potential public health risks to residents, pedestrians and motorists.

The evacuation exercise, supervised by the Metropolitan Coordinating Director, Mr Douglas N.K. Annoful, also saw the removal of a structure put up by a mentally challenged woman on a portion of the pavement in the area and formed part of the Assembly's ongoing sanitation interventions aimed at preventing the accumulation of waste along major roads, streets, and other public spaces within its jurisdiction.

Mr Annoful, who was accompanied by the Director of Waste Management, Engineer Prosper Kotoka, and the Director of Finance, Mr Abeeku Amissah, inspected the affected area and supervised the removal of the refuse to restore cleanliness and improve environmental conditions.

Head of Public Affairs, Mr Gilbert Nii Ankrah addressing the media expressed concern about the indiscriminate dumping of refuse, stressing that such practices undermined the Assembly's waste management operations, while placing an additional burden on public resources that could otherwise be directed towards other essential services.
