5 steps you can take to help prevent child abuse:

Pay attention to children's behaviour and be aware of the signs of abuse.

Teach children about body safety and consent.

Have open and honest conversations with children about abuse.
Trust your instincts and act if you suspect abuse.

Report any suspicions of abuse to the proper authorities.

Remember, it's important to note that preventing child abuse is a community effort, and everyone has a role to play. Educating yourself and others about the signs of abuse and how to prevent it is a crucial step in keeping children safe.

Did you know that APRIL is the Month of Child Abuse Prevention & Sexual Assault Awareness Month? Well, if you didn't know, now you do !

It is important that we all play a part in promoting the social, psychological and emotional well-being of children and families in our communities.

Some examples of Child Sexual Abuse include contact for sexual purposes, molestation, r**e, trafficking, sexually explicit images, exposure, in**st, or other sexually exploitive or provocative activities.

Child Sexual Abuse is a major human rights and social justice issue.
We need everyone’s help to end it.

1 in 5 children in Ghana is affected by Child Sexual Abuse. It is important to create a dialogue on this issue, take action, and change the narrative around child safety by looking at it through a lens of hope and not fear.

However, one of the most difficult topics to talk to children about is SEXUAL ABUSE. Most adults feel ill-equipped to discuss such a sensitive, deemed-to-be complex and tabooed topic with young children. Keeping children safe is the responsibility of adults.

“One tool common to those who sexually abuse kids is grooming. Grooming is a manipulative behavior that abusers use to gain access to a potential victim to coerce them to agree to the abuse and reduce the risk of being caught.

Grooming can take place online or in-person. It’s usually employed by a family member or someone else in the victim’s circle of trust, such as a coach, teacher, youth group leader or others who naturally have some interaction with the victim.

While these tactics are used most often against younger kids, teens and vulnerable adults are also at risk”.

Though grooming can take many different forms, it often follows a similar pattern.
• Victim selection: Abusers often observe possible victims and select them based on ease of access to them or their perceived vulnerability.
• Gaining access and isolating the victim: Abusers will attempt to physically or emotionally separate a victim from those protecting them and often seek out positions in which they have contact with minors.
• Trust development and keeping secrets: Abusers attempt to gain trust of a potential victim through gifts, attention, sharing “secrets” and other means to make them feel that they have a caring relationship and to train them to keep the relationship secret.

Dear Parents / Guardians,
If your child tells you, your spouse or relative is abusing him/her, answer these questions.
What child is going to know about sexual abuse, r**e and violence? Why would a child lie about it? Lots of kids had good relationships with a family member before an abuse happened.

Does it make sense for a child to slander someone he/she loved or still loves? If your partner or family member is as good as you believe, why would he/she completely change behind you? Listen to the Children.

Ama Pomaa Boateng, Deputy Minister for Communication and Digitalization more than 13.000 images and videos of Child sexual abuse were uploaded from Ghana in 2020 alone. Today’s Children are Tomorrow’s Citizens.
