The West Akim Municipal Assembly has officially cut sod for the construction of the much-anticipated 24-Hour Economy Market in Asamankese, marking the commencement of one of Government's flagship initiatives under the 24H+ Programme.
The Assembly had earlier handed over the project site to the contractor on 12th May, 2026, a development that was communicated through the Assembly's official social media platforms on May 13, 2026.
The project forms part of Government's commitment to promoting continuous economic activity, creating employment opportunities, reducing congestion in existing markets and improving trading conditions across the country. Similar markets are expected to be constructed in all 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies nationwide.
Speaking on behalf of the Paramount Chief of Asamankese, Osaberima Adu Darko III, the Asamankese Nifahene, Barfour Kwaku Anyan, reaffirmed the Traditional Council's commitment to the growth and development of Asamankese. He urged traders to ensure fairness in the allocation and use of trading spaces, stressing that walkways and access roads should not be converted into selling points. He further encouraged all traders to comply with the Assembly's directives, particularly in the payment of market tolls and other lawful revenues, noting that internally generated revenue remains essential for the development of the municipality.
Addressing the gathering, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Paulina Akabila, explained that unlike conventional markets which operate only during the day, the 24-Hour Economy Market will provide a safe and modern environment for commercial activities at all times. She indicated that the facility will include police and fire service posts to provide round-the-clock security, banking and digital payment services, cold storage facilities to reduce post-harvest losses, restaurants, clinics and crรจches to support traders and their families.
The MCE noted that although the project is expected to be completed within two years under the national implementation framework, the contractor has assured the Assembly of completing the works in approximately one and a half years.
Present at the ceremony were the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Paulina Akabila; the Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Moses Kobla Joshua; the Presiding Member, Hon. Abdul Karim Yahuza; Nananom; members of the clergy; representatives of Saptco GH Limited; Heads of Departments and Units; Honourable Assembly Members; the media; leaders of the market women associations; party faithful and members of the general public.
The Assembly appreciates the support of all stakeholders and looks forward to the successful ex*****on of this transformative project, which is expected to improve commerce, create jobs and contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of the municipality.
