Regional minister pledges government support for GH B-Lord Poultry Farm in Bongo District
The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has assured a young entrepreneur, Adams Bukari, operating GH B-Lord Poultry Farm in the Bongo District of government support to expand his poultry project under the Feed Ghana Programme and the government’s 24-Hour Economy policy.
Hon. Akamugri gave the assurance during a visit to the farm, describing the project as a laudable initiative that aligns with the government’s efforts to transform agriculture, create jobs and promote domestic production.
According to the Regional Minister, the project was brought to the attention of President John Dramani Mahama by himself and the Upper East Regional Deputy Chief Imam, with a request for the farm to be considered under the Feed Ghana Programme or the 24-Hour Economy initiative.
“So, the Regional Deputy Chief Imam and myself informed the President about this project that is going on here,” Hon. Akamugri said. “We were asking him to consider them under the Feed Ghana or in the 24-Hour Economy.”
He said President Mahama welcomed the idea and directed that the project be inspected to assess how government could support it.
“The President said it was a laudable idea,” he said, adding that after personally seeing the farm, he was impressed by what had been achieved.
Hon. Akamugri explained that he subsequently followed up on the matter in Accra and engaged the National Coordinator of the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat to explore opportunities for the farm under the government’s poultry development programme.
He said the 24-Hour Economy policy has programmes designed to support existing poultry farmers through training and financial assistance to enable them to expand production.
According to him, the government is also working towards a poultry transformation programme aimed at promoting integrated poultry production, including the production of feed crops, poultry and eggs.
“The poultry transformation… is about changing the domestic production of poultry,” he said. “It is going to be an integrated poultry production. So, you have the integrated agriculture and the poultry going alongside.”
Hon. Akamugri noted that increased poultry and egg production could create wider economic opportunities, including in manufacturing and other industries.
He commended the owner of GH B-Lord Poultry Farm, Adams Abukari, for investing his energy and resources in a productive venture instead of engaging in unproductive activities.
“We are here to say that we are grateful to you, as a young boy as you are, and that you thought it wise not to go and do anything wrong,” the Minister said.
“But you thought it wise that, let me use my brain and then my strength to support the economy.”
He said the project was in line with the government’s Feed Ghana and 24-Hour Economy policies and could serve as a model for youth involvement in agriculture.
“Your project has fallen right in line with the Ghana government’s policy of Feed Ghana,” Hon. Akamugri said. “And it is so in line with our 24-Hour Economy policy.”
The Regional Minister assured the farmer that he would take steps to link the project to the relevant government interventions to support its expansion.
“I want to assure you that we will take all the necessary steps to ensure that we get you onto these things, so that we can use this as a centre of excellence for the training of the youth in the Bongo and other districts and constituencies in the region,” he said.
Hon. Akamugri said he would report his findings to President John Dramani Mahama and engage the relevant authorities under the 24-Hour Economy policy to explore ways of supporting and widening production at the farm.
