Community Engagement at Dormabin, Krachi East

The Oti Regional Department of Gender, in partnership with the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) and with support from UNFPA, successfully held a community sensitization programme in Dormabin, Krachi East, on Friday, 20th June 2025, to scale up the fight against child marriage and gender-based violence (GBV).

The event brought together over 100 participants, including parents, children, and key stakeholders, to discuss the harmful effects of child marriage and outmoded cultural practices.

Community members shared concerns and received guidance on reporting abuse and protecting the rights of children. The Department of Gender calls on all parents and leaders to be advocates for change and safeguard the future of our children.

On Wednesday, 4th June 2025, the Department of Gender under the Oti Regional Coordinating Council, in collaboration with UNFPA Ghana, successfully held a one-day sensitization and engagement session with traditional and religious leaders from Krachi East, Nkwanta North, and Nkwanta South.

The event brought together 75 participants, including male and female leaders, and focused on strengthening their role in ending child marriage and addressing sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in their communities. ๐Ÿ“ฃ

Key sessions featured insightful presentations on:
โœ… Childrenโ€™s rights and legal protection (Department of Social Welfare)
โœ… Understanding gender and SGBV (Department of Gender)
โœ… Health impacts of child marriage (Ghana Health Service)
โœ… The role of stakeholders in SGBV prevention (DOVVSU)

๐Ÿ—ฃ Participants engaged in vibrant discussions and developed district-level action plans to promote community education, enforce by-laws, and challenge harmful cultural practices.

On 30th October 2024, the Department of Gender, under the auspices of the Oti Regional Coordinating Council and with funding support from UNFPA, commemorated the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child in the Krachi East Municipality.

A Total of 150 adolescent participants were engaged and sensitised on the effects of teenage pregnancy and child marriage, as well as the importance of embracing STEM education. Solidarity messages from queen mothers, Regional Directors and representatives from CSOs encouraged andempowered participants to stay focused and pursue careers in skill development for global competitiveness.

Resource persons and dignitaries included representatives from the Municipal Health Directorate, Department of Gender, Regional STEM Department, Ghana Standard Authority, Ghana Education Service, TVET and the Traditional Council.

On Thursday, 26th and Friday, 27th September 2024, the Department under the auspices of the Oti Regional Coordinating Council with funding support from UNFPA organised a 2- day Adolescent Mentorship and Empowerment Camp programme for 40 adolescent girls at Bosatsu Hotel in Dambai.

The participants were selected from 3 districts in the Oti Region, namely; Nkwanta North, Nkwanta South and Krachie East Municipal.

They were taken through topic such as;
1. ASRH and STIs
2. Gender, SGBV and Child Marriage
3. Rights and Responsibilities of Child
4. Career and Guidance

They were also linked up with female professionals as mentors and rope models from various career fields.

On Tuesday, 4th June, 2024, The Department of Gender under the auspices of the ORCC with funding support from UNFPA held a one-day consultative meeting with 72 community leaders and District Assembly/ relevant departments at Kpassa in the Nkwanta North District.

Participants were taken through the Rights and Responsibilities of the Child; Understanding Child Marriage Prevalence, Causes and Prevention; the role of the police in preventing and responding to cases of child marriage; and the health risks associated with Child marriage with focus on STIs and teenage pregnancy.
Resource persons were from the Department of Gender, Department of Social Welfare, Ghana Police Service (Kpassa) and Ghana Health Service (Kpassa).

On Friday 8th March 2024, the Department of Gender, Oti Region held a radio discussion at Kano FM to commemorate this year's International Women's Day under the theme "Invest in Women; Accelerate Progress".
The discussion was held by Md. Esther Hammond, Ag. Regional Director of the Department of Gender with Md. Juliet Akpaglo, a former Assembly woman at Dambai and the president of the Corporative Association.
