Applied Technology Institute - East Legon was established on 7th January 1974 on the premises of the Agriculture Mechanization Engineering Directorate. The institute was established by NVTI and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture Engineering Department. The concept was to recruit and train the youth in the area of Construction Machinery Mechanics and

to be employed in their Mechanics Engineering department.

15 trainees were recruited to start the training for the duration of 3 years. In the early ’80s, as the number of trainees increased the demand in other Automotive trade areas became so high, in the 1985 Academic year, Motor Vehicle Mechanics (Light Engine) was introduced. Subsequently, Motor Vehicle Electricals and Heavy-Duty Diesel Mechanics were also introduced and the enrolment kept increasing to date. The institute has witnessed various Institute Managers which has brought a lot of transformational development to the institute. There was a big warehouse which was later divided into two to three classrooms, a staff common room, and a Library. In 2012 the Institute thought of expanding the school including other demand-driven programs like Electronics Engineering and Computer Hardware Engineering. Drawing proposals were made, the inclusion of Boys and Girls Hostel blocks and workshops.
