ROAD SAFETY EDUCATION

In line with our mandate as well as being stakeholders of the regional “Stay Alive” campaign launched by the National Road Safety Authority on the 17th of December 2021, officers of the NEW JUABENG SOUTH MUNICIPAL FIRE STATION visited bus stations and terminals to educated drivers on the need and importance of regular maintenance on their vehicles so as to avoid accidents.

Drivers were educated on the need to have fire extinguishers in their vehicles as well as best safety practises for filling their tanks especially those using liquified petroleum gas (LPG).
They were also advised not to drink and drive and not to drive when tired.

The fire officers did not relent on admonishing the drivers to obey the road safety and traffic regulations as doing so would go a long way to reducing the senseless carnage on our roads.

Passengers were not left out as they were advised to speak up and report drivers who drive recklessly.

Your safety is our priority.
Remember, road safety and accident prevention is a shared responsibility. You are responsible, I am responsible, we are all responsible.
When we all play our roles effectively, road accidents will reduce significantly.

CATCH THEM YOUNG AND THEY WILL BE YOURS FOREVER

The Good Book in Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it”.
With this in mind, officers of DONKORKROM FIRE STATION took the fire safety and prevention education campaign to the young minds of the students of Holy Rosary Preparatory School in Donkorkrom.

Even the children have not been left out in our bid to educate the public in order to bring the rate of fire outbreaks down.

The Ghana National Fire Service believes that when children are taught and inculcated at a young age with best practises on fire safety and prevention, they will not only grow up to practise it, but will also go home to teach friends and family what they have been taught.

Your safety is our priority.
Remember, fire safety and prevention is a shared responsibility. You are responsible, I am responsible, we are all responsible.

EDUCATION, EDUCATION, EDUCATION
The only weapon that the Fire Service has against the occurance of fire outbreaks is “education”.
The more the public is educated on the does and don'ts of fire safety and prevention, the more enlightened they will be to prevent such fire outbreaks from occurring.

Officers of the NEW JUABENG SOUTH MUNICIPAL FIRE STATION deployed this weapon in the market place and bus stations in Koforidua as they engaged the general public on the does and don'ts of fire safety and prevention.

Members of the public were given the chance to ask questions and make contributions as they were educated by the knowledgeable officers

In line with the advice and education given at regional launch of the 2021 Annual Anti-Bushfire campaign on the 17th of December 2021 under the theme; Bushfires, a menace to Planting for Food and jobs, Consolidating Food systems in Ghana, officers of the ASESEWA FIRE STATION supervised the creation of a fire belt at Asare Odometa plantation at Odometa a suburb of Asesewa.

A “Fire Belt” is a strip of land created around a farm or plantation with a width of up to about three metres or more cleared of combustible material by various means to enable controlled burning as well as to stop the fire from crossing over to another farm or plantation.

The harmattan blowing in the country right now can result in an increased rate of bushfires if care is not taken. Farmers are therefore advised to create fire belts around their farms and plantations as this is the only solution to protecting their farms from getting destroyed.

Your safety is our priority.

WHO TO CALL IN THE EVENT OF A ROAD TRAFFIC COLLISION (VEHICULAR ACCIDENT)

It has been the case that sometimes when road traffic collisions occur, the information about the incident is passed on to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) by the Ghana Police Service (GPS) as a result of bystanders calling the police to inform them of the accident. Bystanders tend to place the emergency calls to the police believing that it's the responsibility of the police to rescue trapped victims from road accidents.

The public must note that in the event of a road traffic collision, the first point of call must be the Fire Service.
By law, it is GNFS that is mandated to be the first emergency responder when road accidents occur.

GHANA NATIONAL FIRE SERVICE ACT, 1997, ACT 537 Section 4, subsection (b) (j) states that the Service is to “offer rescue and evacuation services to those trapped by fire or in any other emergency situation”. As earlier said, this mandates the Fire Service to be the first point of call in the event of a road accident.

That is why it is the emergency Service that has the requisite tools, training and technical know-how on how to extricate accident victims “safely” from vehicles involved in collisions.

Calling the Fire Service directly saves a lot of precious time which is very significant because when it comes to saving lives involved in road traffic collisions, every second counts.

Kindly take note of the following emergency numbers to call in the unfortunate event of a road accident.

Help us educate others on this topic by sharing this post. Thank you.

KNOW YOUR EMERGENCY LINES
In the unfortunate event of an emergency such as a fire outbreak or a road traffic collision in the Eastern Region, do you know the emergency line to call?

Knowing the emergency lines will save precious lives and property as it will be readily available to call for the necessary action to be taken.

Knowing the emergency lines will save precious “TIME” as some people tend to call radio stations or other Security Service's emergency lines to report the incident before it is then relayed to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

This is a waste of precious time as when it comes to firefighting or road traffic collision extrication, every second counts.

A word of caution. Making prank calls to emergency lines is a prosecutable offence. Not only is it illegal and a nuisance, it also wastes precious time as those who may genuinely need to call may not get through because a prank call is being made. Let us desist from making such calls.

Let's remember, fire safety and prevention is a shared responsibility. You are responsible, I am responsible, we are all responsible.
