Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong and Dr. Alex Kumi Larbi, Jospong Group International Office speak on the topic:

*Waste as Resource: Building a Circular Economy at Scale Across African Cities*

African cities generate waste faster than they can collect it, and most of what is collected goes to landfill sites that are already beyond capacity.

This address treats that position as a commercial opportunity rather than a crisis to be managed. It examines what it takes to build waste infrastructure at city scale in African conditions. It deals with the failures as well as the successes, including sites that could not be made viable and contracts that did not survive a change of administration.

Drawing on operations across Ghana and several other African and Asian markets, it sets out what a city would need to have in place before a circular waste economy could be established there.

Rev. (Mrs.) Angela Carmen Appiah, CEO, African Corporate Governance Network, takes on the topic:

*Governing the Transition: Boards, Directors and Accountability in African Corporations*

Sustainability commitments are made by executives and are supposed to be held to account by boards. Across much of Africa that accountability is thin. Directors are appointed for reasons that have little to do with oversight, board papers arrive too late to be interrogated, and environmental and social risk reaches the board as a presentation rather than as a decision.

This address examines what effective board oversight of sustainability would actually look like in an African corporation. It considers the composition and competence a board needs, the information it should demand and the questions it should be asking management, and the difference between a board that receives an ESG report and one that acts on it.

*PANEL 1A
*Built Environment: Design, Delivery and Embodied Carbon* **

More than sixty per cent of the infrastructure Africa will need by 2050 has not yet been built. The decisions taken now about how it is designed and delivered will set its environmental and social cost for a generation. Yet the green building standards in use were written for other markets, and they assume records and tools most African sites do not have.

Panel 1A sits six experts, chaired by Prof. Emmanuel Adinyira, Dean of the Faculty of Built Environment, KNUST, with leaders from the Ghana Green Building Council, the Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry, IET Ghana, USTED and the World Bank Group to interrogate the subject
