CENTRAL REGIONAL PRISONS COMMAND PARTNERS CAPE COAST TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY TO EMPOWER INMATES WITH VOCATIONAL SKILLS
The Central Regional Prisons Command has entered into a strategic partnership with Cape Coast Technical University (CCTU) to provide inmates with vocational and technical training aimed at equipping them with employable skills for successful reintegration into society after their release.
The collaboration was the outcome of a strategic engagement between the leadership of the two institutions during a courtesy call by the Central Regional Prisons Commander, Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP) Joseph Asabre, on the management of CCTU.
Under the proposed initiative, inmates will receive training in various skill areas including fashion design and garment production, welding and fabrication, culinary arts, biodigester engineering, digital and ICT skills, and graphic design.
Welcoming the Prisons delegation on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, the Dean of the School of Engineering, Professor Eric Awere, expressed appreciation for the visit and commended the Prisons Service for the forward-thinking initiative. He assured the delegation of the University’s readiness to ensure a fruitful partnership.
As part of the discussions, Dr. Gabriel Mwinkume, Coordinator for Competency-Based Training at CCTU, presented the proposed concept note for the collaboration, while CSP Vincent Ziniel, Head of Business Development and Special Initiatives for the Service, highlighted key areas requiring review and refinement.
Professor Awere reiterated the University’s commitment to ensuring quality and timely implementation of the proposed programs. He further disclosed that management was working towards securing funding for the initiative and that a memorandum of understanding was being prepared for consideration.
In his closing remarks, DDP Joseph Asabre emphasized that the partnership would offer inmates practical vocational skills backed by recognized certification, thereby improving their chances of gaining employment upon discharge and contributing positively to society.
Also present at the meeting were Dr. Anthony H. Turkson, Registrar of CCTU, Superintendent David Batule Koffie, Public Relations Officer, and DSP Addo Danquah, Staff Officer at Ankaful Maximum Security Prison.
