EMPOWERING KUMASI’S CHILD DEVELOPMENT WORKERS: FOUR-DAY TRAINING ON PROTECTION TOOLS AND INITIATIVES

Child development workers in Kumasi Metro have received intensive training on the Child Protection Toolkit, PSEA, GACA, and “I Will” concepts, strengthening their capacity to safeguard children’s rights across 14 communities.
Supported by Compassion International in collaboration with the Department of Children in the Ashanti Region, the initiative brought together representatives from 14 clusters of churches and organizations within Kumasi Metro.
The four-day capacity-building workshop took place from March 19th to 22nd, 2026, at the GNAT Guest House in Abankro near Ejisu. Financially backed by Compassion International, the training equipped participants with essential skills to advance children’s rights in their communities.
Facilitators from the Department of Children and community development organizations led the sessions, diving into core child protection concepts. These included national laws, policies, and international conventions and treaties, with spotlight sessions on gender issues, violence against children, the “I Will” initiative, GACA (Ghana Action Against Child Abuse) Campaign, and PSEA (Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse).
Participants gained practical tools to engage children, church members, families, and communities on child-related matters.

Participants’ Understanding was tested through practical demonstrations and quizzes, featuring interactive games such as Circle of Support, Balloon Games, Tug of War, Stepping Stone, Sack of Stones, Shark Island, Ludo Game, Spoon Full of Life, and Rights and Responsibilities. The Gender and Age Power Walk also emerged as a favorite during these hands-on periods.
The group is actively working across 14 communities in Greater Kumasi, making concerted efforts to promote child protection.

This training has strengthened the role of faith-based organizations in protecting vulnerable children, fostering safer environments through empowered action.
It is believed that armed with this toolkit knowledge, their approach to child protection issues in communities will yield greater results than ever before.

REVIEW OF THE SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS IN GHANA .
Accra, Ghana – March 11, 2026 The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, through the Department of Children, organised, a day-long review meeting at the Ministry’s Conference room to scrutinize the draft Situational Analysis of Children and Adolescents in Ghana (SITAN) Report.
The meeting brought together stakeholders from various sectors to validate the report’s findings, identify critical data gaps, and prioritize key issues affecting Ghanaian children from birth through adolescence.
Chaired by Mr. Nii Odoi Odotei of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), the event began with an opening address from Co-Chair Dr. Sylvester Kyei-Gyamfi, who emphasized collaborative review. Mr. Odotei then outlined the core objective of rigorously assessing the SITAN report to ensure the report’s conclusions reflect ground realities.
The Technical sessions were led by a consultant who presented the comprehensive report in two main parts. The first covered the national context and early years, from pregnancy to birth (0-12 months) and infancy through early childhood (1-5 years). Participants then engaged in a robust plenary discussion to validate findings and identify data gaps for the country’s youngest citizens.
The second part focused on middle childhood (6-11 years) and adolescence (12-19 years), followed by another plenary to debate challenges and opportunities for older children. The consultant wrapped up with the report’s overarching conclusions and recommendations, which participants vetted in a final open-floor discussion.
The meeting’s collaborative spirit highlighted a shared commitment to evidence-based policymaking.
The carefully validated findings and priorities will guide future interventions, programs, and policies to protect children’s rights and foster their development across Ghana.

SUAME JHS STUDENTS PLEDGE TO DITCH GAMBLING, TRUANCY AFTER SENSITIZATION DRIVE

Suame, February 13, 2026: The Department of Children in Ashanti Region in collaboration with the Department of Gender organised a day’s sensitization program with the Suame Methodist Junior High School.

The program which was held in the school’s auditorium engaged 493 students and 13 teachers. The Ghanaians Against Child Abuse (GACA) and the I WILL campaign tool kits were used to sensitize the participants

The event centred on everyday vices and youth threats, and how to overcome these threats head-on.
The students were educated on the effects of gambling’s ruinous grip, truancy, smoking, sexual violence,

They were also briefed on rights and responsibilities, online safety, bullying, hooliganism, and the urgency of diligent study.

The exercise also featured interactive sessions designed to arm students with strategies for avoiding these pitfalls, ultimately fostering a safer school culture.

The sensitization exercise was launched after the Departments of Children and Gender were formally alerted to a disciplinary crisis: the expulsion of four JHS 3 boys for gambling on campus. Following a parent’s urgent appeal, department officials acted swiftly to mediate the impasse, through high-level discussions with school leadership to secure the students’ reinstatement.

This was finalized through a good behaviour bond, transitioning the incident from a punitive measure into an opportunity for rehabilitation and a broader campaign against underage gaming

To prevent recurrence, the entire school received comprehensive education, nipping the menace in the bud. Students expressed zeal and solemn vows to “turn over a new leaf.

The Teaching staff had their own session on the I WILL framework and GACA strategies, learning tactics to manage challenging behaviours through positive guidance.

As the program wrapped, the Department pledged a follow-up visit before year’s end, reinforcing its commitment to child welfare. Programmes like this show how targeted interventions can redirect young lives,
