The Information Commission, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is currently conducting a nationwide awareness tour on the Access to Information Act, 2021 and the Personal Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2025.
The campaign forms part of the Strengthening Citizen Trust and Public Accountability for Peaceful Coexistence in The Gambia Project and is engaging public officials and community members across the country through regional town halls and community outreach.
The sessions are strengthening participants’ understanding of citizens’ right to access public information, the responsibilities of public institutions under the Access to Information framework, and the rights and protections provided under the Personal Data Protection and Privacy Act.
The campaign also provides an important platform for dialogue between public institutions and communities, helping to promote greater transparency, accountability, public participation and trust.
By taking these conversations directly to communities, the initiative is helping to ensure that both public officials and citizens understand their respective rights and responsibilities under these important legal frameworks.

Strengthening local governance requires gender-responsive leadership that enables institutions to effectively meet the needs of all citizens.
With support from European Union in The Gambia and UNDP The Gambia through the GREAT Project, Gambia Association of Local Government Authorities -GALGA' completed a two-day training for 28 officials from Kanifing Municipal Council and Banjul City Council on the application of newly developed gender mainstreaming tools.
We are strengthening the capacity of local councils through tailored training that integrates gender considerations into planning, budgeting, and service delivery, helping to promote more inclusive, equitable, and responsive local governance for all citizens.

Strong institutions are at the heart of sustainable development.

The Right Honourable Speaker of Lesotho and delegation concluded their institutional engagements with a courtesy call on the Honourable Speaker of The Gambia's National Assembly, reaffirming the important role of parliamentary leadership in advancing accountable governance, effective oversight, representation and national development initiatives that deliver for the people to ensure no one is left behind.

This exchange and partnership underscored the value of and the commitment of the United Nations Development System in harnessing & sharing regional & global experiences to accelerate implementation of the SDGs & AU Agenda 2063.

3️⃣0️⃣ Traditional Communicators from across The Gambia have successfully completed a three-day capacity-building training on the Access to Information Act and the Personal Data Protection & Privacy Act.
The training strengthened participants' understanding of these laws and equipped them with practical skills to translate legal concepts into locally relevant awareness messages, songs and skits that resonate with communities across the country.

As trusted community voices, the communicators are now better equipped to raise awareness of citizens' rights and responsibilities, promote access to information, safeguard personal data and foster a culture of transparency and accountability at the grassroots level.

By investing in community-led awareness and engagement, UNDP and its partners are helping ensure that the principles of openness, privacy and accountable governance reach communities across The Gambia, empowering citizens to make informed decisions and actively participate in governance.

Turning plans into lasting impact.
Monthly Technical Committee Meetings help ensure the results-based management of UNDP programmes in The Gambia and bridge the gap between day-to-day implementation and long-term goals.
The 18th Technical Committee Meeting of the EU–UNDP GREAT Project provided a strategic forum for UNDP and partners to review progress, address implementation challenges, and agree on priority actions for the months ahead. Through collaboration and evidence-based decision-making, we continue to strengthen our collective efforts to deliver governance reforms that meet citizens’ needs and support a more transparent, accountable, and inclusive public sector.

Building accountable governance institutions and empowering citizens remain central to UNDP's work in The Gambia.
Supported through the - GREAT Initiative, ongoing governance reforms are strengthening transparency, access to justice, and opportunities for citizens to engage in decision-making. The 5th Steering Committee Meeting, confirmed these positive results outlined in the GREAT project Mid-Term Evaluation which, confirmed that it remains on track and continues to be highly relevant.
Together with our partners, we are helping create a more inclusive future where women, youth, and persons with disabilities can actively shape governance and development outcomes.

The National Assembly of The Gambia, with support from the European Union and UNDP, celebrated the graduation of four Parliamentary Fellows under the EU–UNDP GREAT Project.
Over the past 12 months, the Fellows were embedded within the National Assembly, working alongside parliamentary staff to strengthen institutional capacity and contribute to more effective democratic governance. Their work supported evidence-informed legislative oversight, enhanced parliamentary support services, and reinforced the Assembly's constitutional functions of legislation, oversight and representation.
The Fellowship Programme, implemented as a strategic investment in institutional capacity and human capital, combined mentorship, practical experience and professional development while introducing fresh perspectives and specialized expertise to support the National Assembly's modernization and reform agenda.
Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta, Speaker of the National Assembly, described the Fellowship Programme as a cornerstone of institutional renewal, emphasizing that investing in human capital is essential to building a modern, effective and citizen centred Parliament. He commended the European Union and UNDP for their continued partnership in strengthening parliamentary democracy in The Gambia.
UNDP Deputy Resident Representative and Officer in Charge, Ms. Evelyn Edroma, reaffirmed UNDP's commitment to supporting parliamentary modernization and empowering young people as future leaders of democratic governance. She underscored that effective parliaments are central to sustainable development and welcomed the National Assembly's decision to retain two Fellows, reflecting the programme's lasting impact and contribution to sustainable institutional capacity.
Mr. Kalipha Mbye, Clerk of the National Assembly, highlighted the Fellows' significant contributions to committee work, legislative research, bill scrutiny, strategic communications and public engagement. He noted that the programme has strengthened institutional capacity, fostered professional excellence and reinforced the Assembly's commitment to delivering effective legislative, oversight and representative functions.
UNDP remains committed to working with the National Assembly, the European Union and other strategic partners to strengthen democratic institutions, advance parliamentary modernization and support a more effective, inclusive and citizen responsive Parliament that delivers for all Gambians.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), in partnership with the EU & UNDP, convened its Monthly Stakeholder Consultative Forum to provide updates on preparations for the publication of the 2026 Provisional Voters' List and the next steps in The Gambia's electoral process.
The forum provided stakeholders with updates on the completion of the supplementary voter registration exercise, ongoing verification of voter registration data, the appeals and objections processes, and measures aimed at strengthening understanding of the electoral process. The engagement reaffirmed the importance of transparency, inclusiveness, and multi-stakeholder collaboration in fostering public confidence in the integrity of the electoral process.
Through its partnership with the IEC, the EU-UNDP GREAT Project continues to support efforts to strengthen democratic governance by promoting inclusive dialogue, institutional capacity, and meaningful stakeholder engagement in support of credible, transparent, and people centred elections in The Gambia.
