In a powerful affirmation of South-South cooperation and sub-national diplomacy, Her Worship Lord Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe, Mayor of Banjul, will welcome His Excellency Governor Douye Diri, Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, Nigeria, from 2nd to 6th June 2026 for the official launch of three commemorative works—a book, a magazine, and a documentary—celebrating her leadership journey.

This distinguished visit, one of the highest-profile diplomatic attendances by a sitting Nigerian Governor, underscores the deepening ties between Banjul and Bayelsa State. The event will take place at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre, Banjul.

His Excellency Governor Douye Diri stands among Nigeria’s pre-eminent political leaders. As Chief Executive of Bayelsa State—one of the nation’s most strategically important oil-producing states—he occupies a position of immense influence and responsibility. Within the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, he is a leading voice. Across the African continent, he is a respected advocate for governance, development, and regional cooperation. In essence, he holds one of the highest and most respected offices in Africa’s largest democracy.

That His Excellency has chosen to honour the personal invitation of Her Worship Rohey Malick Lowe speaks volumes. It is a powerful affirmation of her growing continental and international stature. Over the years, Her Worship has established herself as one of Africa’s most prominent champions of local governance, women’s leadership, urban transformation, and international cooperation. She has carried the name of Banjul not as a passenger, but as a standard-bearer onto some of the world’s most influential platforms.

Governor Douye Diri’s arrival in Banjul, alongside a distinguished assembly of leaders from across Africa and beyond, transforms this occasion into far more than a celebration of one leader’s journey. History smiled on Banjul today as Her Worship the Lord Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe, delivered the official closing statement of the World Urban Forum 13 in Baku, Azerbaijan on behalf of Local and Regional Governments across the world.

Before global leaders, policymakers, development institutions, mayors, ministers and urban stakeholders, the voice of Banjul stood firm, bold, and unmistakably clear.

In a defining address centered on the urgent global housing crisis and the future of cities, Her Worship called for stronger political recognition, meaningful financial empowerment for local governments, and reminded the world that housing is not a privilege, but a human right.

From a small city on the shores of The Gambia to one of the world’s most important urban platforms, Banjul once again proved that leadership is not measured by size but by vision, courage and impact.

Today, Banjul did not just attend the World Urban Forum. Banjul helped close it.

Banjul City Council proudly acknowledges the participation of Women Representative Cllr. Fatou Ada Joof, who is currently in Fuzhou, China as part of the delegation from the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare attending a Seminar on Women Employment and Entrepreneurship Capacity Building.

Her participation reflects the Council’s continued commitment to women empowerment, leadership and international cooperation geared towards the advancement of our city and people.

The Council also expresses sincere appreciation to the Government and People of the People’s Republic of China for the opportunity and continued friendship and cooperation.

🌍🇬🇲Her Worship Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe of Banjul is proudly representing the City of Banjul and The Gambia at the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), currently taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan from 17th–22nd May 2026.

Organized by UN-Habitat, the World Urban Forum is one of the world’s leading international conferences on sustainable urban development, bringing together Heads of State, Mayors, city leaders, policymakers, development partners, civil society organizations, and international institutions from across the globe.

This year’s forum is being convened under the theme:
“Housing the World: Safe and Resilient Cities and Communities,” focusing on innovative solutions for sustainable urbanization, climate resilience, housing, youth empowerment, environmental sustainability, and strengthening local governance systems.

As part of the high-level engagements, the Mayor participated in the World Assembly of Local and Regional Governments session themed:
“Local Leadership Shaping a Renewed Multilateralism,” where global city leaders exchanged ideas and strategies on enhancing international cooperation and empowering local governments to address urban challenges effectively.

Banjul City Council remains committed to fostering international partnerships, promoting sustainable city development, strengthening climate action initiatives, and advancing inclusive urban governance for the benefit of all residents of the City of Banjul. 🇬🇲✨

Following an emergency situation around the State House and Albert Market area today, Banjul City Council worked alongside NAWEC in ongoing sewage management operations aimed at addressing the matter as swiftly as possible in the interest of public health and sanitation.

As part of the intervention, Council deployed its septic tank service and technical support team to complement the exercise on the ground. The Deputy Mayor of Banjul, Hon. Abdou Aziz Dabakh Gaye, was also present during the operation to monitor progress and support coordination efforts.

The exercise once again highlighted the importance of institutional collaboration and rapid response when urgent situations arise within the city. NAWEC remain important partners in service delivery, and together, efforts continue towards maintaining cleaner, safer and healthier surroundings across the city of Banjul.

At Banjul City Council, we remain committed to practical action, partnership and service to the people of Banjul.

Today, Thursday 14th May 2026, the General Council of Banjul City Council convened its monthly sitting at the Council Chamber under the chairpersonship of Her Worship the Lord Mayoress of Banjul, Rohey Malick Lowe, together with the Deputy Mayor, Honourable Councillors, Senior Management and invited stakeholders.

Council received a detailed presentation from Elizabeth Bahoum on a Draft MOU regarding the proposed Manneh Sillah Basketball Lawn initiative. She was accompanied by the President of the Gambia Basketball Federation, Ndongo Camara, alongside members of his team, where discussions centered around sports development, youth engagement and the broader transformation of recreational spaces within the City.

Council also received a comprehensive presentation from Innovii Digital on the proposed Smart Car Parking Management Project for Banjul. The presentation outlined modern digital parking systems aimed at improving traffic order, reducing congestion, enhancing revenue collection efficiency and introducing smarter urban mobility management for the City.

Modern parking management systems around the world are increasingly becoming central pillars of smart cities, utilizing technologies such as digital payments, vehicle recognition systems and real-time monitoring to improve urban order and accountability. Such systems are known to improve traffic flow, strengthen city revenue generation and create direct and indirect employment opportunities for young people in administration, enforcement, ICT support and maintenance sectors.

Council further deliberated on other matters of very significant importance geared towards the continued improvement, modernization and orderly development of the City of Banjul.

The discussions at today’s sitting reflected Council’s continued commitment towards innovation, structure, youth opportunity and building a cleaner, smarter and more economically active Banjul.

At Banjul City Council, the vision remains clear: order, development and delivery.

Today, Her Worship the Lord Mayoress of Banjul, Rohey Malick Lowe, together with the Deputy Mayor Abdou Aziz Dabakh Gaye, Honourable Councillors, Senior Management, Council Staff, members of the media, and other stakeholders, officially received the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to The Gambia, Liu Jin, at the grounds of the Banjul City Council for the formal handing-over ceremony of three newly acquired custom-made Waste Collection Trucks and over two hundred Solar Street Lights generously donated to the Council by Banjul’s Sister City, Nanning.

This significant milestone stands as yet another reflection of the visionary leadership, relentless advocacy, and international engagement efforts of Her Worship the Lord Mayoress, whose administration continues to position Banjul as a city actively building meaningful global partnerships capable of delivering real and visible development for its people.

As Banjul continues pushing for cleaner streets and brighter nights, today’s ceremony further marked another major step in the growing partnership between Banjul and Nanning — a relationship steadily transforming diplomacy into tangible progress on the ground.

The newly donated custom-built waste collection trucks are expected to significantly strengthen sanitation operations across the city, whilst the installation of over 200 solar street lights will improve lighting, visibility, security, and public safety in several communities and key public spaces within Banjul.

From environmental sanitation to modern public infrastructure, the streets of Banjul are steadily entering a new chapter of renewal and transformation through strategic international cooperation, bold leadership, and practical delivery.

The Council expresses profound appreciation to the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China, the City of Nanning, and all partners involved in making this important intervention possible.

As a Council, we remain committed to building a cleaner, brighter, safer, and more progressive city for all.
