In a powerful affirmation of South-South cooperation and sub-national diplomacy, Her Worship Lord Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe, Mayor of Banjul, will welcome His Excellency Governor Douye Diri, Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, Nigeria, from 2nd to 6th June 2026 for the official launch of three commemorative worksβa book, a magazine, and a documentaryβcelebrating her leadership journey.
This distinguished visit, one of the highest-profile diplomatic attendances by a sitting Nigerian Governor, underscores the deepening ties between Banjul and Bayelsa State. The event will take place at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre, Banjul.
His Excellency Governor Douye Diri stands among Nigeriaβs pre-eminent political leaders. As Chief Executive of Bayelsa Stateβone of the nationβs most strategically important oil-producing statesβhe occupies a position of immense influence and responsibility. Within the Nigeria Governorsβ Forum, he is a leading voice. Across the African continent, he is a respected advocate for governance, development, and regional cooperation. In essence, he holds one of the highest and most respected offices in Africaβs largest democracy.
That His Excellency has chosen to honour the personal invitation of Her Worship Rohey Malick Lowe speaks volumes. It is a powerful affirmation of her growing continental and international stature. Over the years, Her Worship has established herself as one of Africaβs most prominent champions of local governance, womenβs leadership, urban transformation, and international cooperation. She has carried the name of Banjul not as a passenger, but as a standard-bearer onto some of the worldβs most influential platforms.
Governor Douye Diriβs arrival in Banjul, alongside a distinguished assembly of leaders from across Africa and beyond, transforms this occasion into far more than a celebration of one leaderβs journey. It becomes a celebration of enduring public service, visionary leadership, and Banjulβs rising place in African and global affairs.
As Banjul prepares to receive this distinguished statesman and his delegation, we do so with a profound sense of purpose: to deepen the bonds of friendship, strengthen the ties of cooperation, and advance a shared vision of progress between our peoples and institutions.
Banjul stands ready to welcome His Excellency Governor Douye Diri.
