Amidst the busy commercial activities at the Basse Central Market and its surrounding areas, as commuters prepare for the celebration of the Muslim feast of Eid al-Adha, the Cleaning Services Unit of the Basse Area Council embarked on a major cleaning exercise on Monday to reduce the huge accumulation of waste around the market.

With Monday declared a public holiday and only Tuesday available for official work in between, our dedicated cleaning team wasted no time in ensuring that the market environment remains clean and convenient for the busy activities.

While we remain committed to maintaining cleanliness within the market and its surroundings, we also encourage all residents, commuters, and businesses to take responsibility for the proper disposal of waste during this festive period.

The Basse Area Council is pleased to have donated ultramodern medical beds to the Basse District Hospital to complement the recent renovation works at the Medical Ward.

The donated beds have now been successfully installed in the renovated ward to help improve quality healthcare services for the people of the Upper River Region at the region’s main referral centre.

Speaking during the handing-over ceremony in March 2026, the Officer In-Charge of the hospital, Dr. Lamin Jawo, acknowledged the importance and timely nature of the donation, describing the beds as modern facilities suitable for all categories of patients.

This forms part of the Council’s continued support to the health sector since the current leadership assumed office in 2023. The recent support includes the donation of over 20 modern hospital beds to various health facilities in 2023 and more than D500,000 worth of medical equipment donated in 2025.

The Council, under the leadership of Honourable Mahamadou Ceesay, remains committed to advancing the healthcare system of the region as one of the key priorities outlined in its Strategic Development Plan 2023–2029.

The staff and management of the Basse Area Council, led by the Honourable Chairperson Mahamadou Ceesay, are currently taking part in the International Workers’ Day celebration in Basse, Upper River Region.

The Council joined other regional institutions in commemorating the day as a reflection on staff unity, welfare, and empowerment through sports activities.

It is only half the day, and we are apparently leading in nearly every game. We will collect all the points from this event in the second half. πŸ˜ƒ

The newly nominated Youth Councillor of the Basse Area Council, Honourable Assanatou Jallow, was duly sworn into office today at the third general council meeting of 2026.

The nomination process was entirely entrusted to the Upper River Regional Youth Committee by the office of Honourable Mahamadou Ceesay - Chairman Basse Area Council, who later selected and recommended Honourable Assanatou as the new Youth Representative to replace the resigning Councillor who previously held the position.

The Chairperson described this as a testament to the Council’s commitment to ensure the voices of the youth are heard directly, without deterrent, to promote accountability and transparency in shaping their affairs and wishes at the Council level.

The general council congratulated Honourable Assanatou and officially welcomed her to the proceedings of the council on the day and the RYC for their collaboration in executing the selection process.

While it remains a concern, the Honourable Chairman Mahamadou Ceesay has mobilised a group of Council security on station this morning to clean the front of the Basse market and reduce the high amount of waste accumulated during the busy period of Koriteh preparations.

As we assured in our previous update made less than 24 hours ago, the Council remains committed to ensuring cleanliness around the main central market and town of Basse. We have also deployed more dustbins around the market vicinity to promote proper waste disposal ahead of the resumption of official work on Tuesday.

We are calling on residents and market users to make the best use of the trash bins during this holiday period to ensure a collective effort in keeping the main town clean.

Amid the busy and congested period of market activities in preparation for the Muslim feast of Eid al-Fitr locally known as Koriteh, every effort made to keep the town clean remains unproductive. However, the Basse Area Council has taken note of the current sanitation situation with great concern.

Given that this is a period of public holidays, during which many people, including our staff, particularly cleaners have left to be with their families and loved ones, the Council wishes to inform residents and market users that the situation will be promptly addressed once work fully resumes on Tuesday.

The Council remains firmly committed to maintaining cleanliness at this important commercial hub. We therefore kindly appeal to residents, vendors, and visitors to bear with us during this short period, as we work towards restoring proper sanitation services when normal activities resume next week.
