Why is Germany's Foreign Minister 🇩🇪 making his third trip to Africa since taking office? Because Africa is a key partner for Germany and Europe ‼️

His first stop: Mauritania 🇲🇷 - an anchor of stability in a region facing growing security challenges. While others rely on escalation and confrontation, Mauritania focuses on de-escalation, dialogue and diplomatic solutions. 🤝

The country has also shown extraordinary solidarity by hosting more than 300,000 refugees from neighbouring Mali 🇲🇱, despite having a population of just around 5.5 million people.

Germany will continue to stand alongside Mauritania through humanitarian assistance, development cooperation and initiatives that strengthen peace and create opportunities for young people. ✅

Together, Germany and Mauritania are working towards a more stable, prosperous and resilient future for the region. 👏🏾

‼️ "Africa and Europe are united by more than just geographical proximity."

✈️ Three countries. Three regions. One goal: strengthening partnerships between Germany and Africa.

🇩🇪 German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is travelling to Mauritania, Nigeria and South Africa this week to discuss closer cooperation. At a time of geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty, Germany stands for reliable partnerships—from security and stability to economic growth, fair trade, renewable energy, and climate action.

🇲🇷 In Mauritania, talks focus on stability in the Sahel, closer economic relations, and opportunities in renewable energy and green hydrogen.

🇳🇬 In Nigeria, Germany aims to deepen economic and political ties with Africa's most populous country and one of its largest economies.

🇿🇦 In South Africa, the Foreign Minister will build on the recently established Strategic Partnership, exploring closer cooperation on multilateralism, energy, and trade.

Because strong partnerships are built through dialogue—and solutions that benefit both sides. 🤝🌍

Stay tuned for more updates from each stop!

Every 18 July, Nelson Mandela International Day celebrates the values he championed: peace, human dignity, equality and service to others. These are principles that continue to guide cooperation across Africa, including through the Union.

🏆⚽ Did you know Germany's most symbolic World Cup victory came only a few months before the country was officially reunited?

Sunday's World Cup Final between Spain and Argentina is almost here! But before we find out who lifts the trophy, let's take a look back.

On 8 July 1990, West Germany defeated Argentina 1–0 in Rome to win its third FIFA World Cup title. The match was decided by Andreas Brehme's late penalty, while Franz Beckenbauer became one of the few people to win the tournament as both a player and a coach.

Just under three months later, on 3 October 1990, Germany was officially reunified.

‼️ As a result, the victory became more than a football achievement—it remains a powerful symbol of a nation on the brink of a new chapter.

Football made history, but history was about to change football too. 🇩🇪

You think World War I lasted a long time? Think again. ⚠️

Russia's war against Ukraine 🇺🇦 has now lasted longer than World War I.

When Russia launched its full-scale invasion on 24 February 2022, many expected the fighting to last weeks, not years.

⏱️ Yet by June 2026, the conflict had surpassed the 1,568-day duration of World War I, becoming one of the longest major interstate wars in modern history.

🪖 Historians often compare the two conflicts because of their trench warfare, relentless artillery battles and slow, costly advances. But this war has also introduced a defining feature of 21st-century combat: drones, which have transformed how battles are fought.

🌾 The impact extends far beyond Europe. The disruption of Ukrainian grain and fertiliser exports has affected global food markets, with many African countries facing higher food prices, increased import costs and greater pressure on food security. This has underscored the importance of keeping agricultural trade routes open.

🖤 African families have also paid a heavy price. Mothers, sisters and wives have lost loved ones who were deceived into fighting for Russia in the war.

This conflict has reshaped global security, displaced millions of people, and continues to have profound humanitarian, economic and geopolitical consequences.
