On Saturday, 29th August 2026, The Gambia’s Technical Working Group (TWG) on Risk Modelling began a week‑long study tour in Maputo, Mozambique, to deepen expertise in drought index modelling.
The Gambia, through its National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), prepares to participate in flood insurance mechanisms offered by African Risk Capacity. The delegation, led by Mr. Mawdo Amadou Jallow, Government Coordinator, comprised six senior government officials and two staff members from the World Food Programme (WFP).
According to Mr. Jallow, the study tour is a critical step in ensuring that disaster risk financing and anticipatory action are firmly embedded in national resilience strategies.

Five staff members from the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) in Ghana are participating in a regional training programme dedicated to strengthening the use of Earth Observation (EO), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and International Charter tools for disaster preparedness and response across West Africa.
This initiative is designed to build participants' capacity to effectively utilise satellite data and GIS technologies for hazard monitoring, risk assessment, the development of early-warning indicators, and preparedness planning.
For NDMA, the training provides a crucial opportunity to enhance technical expertise and practical skills in applying EO and GIS solutions to support disaster risk reduction and emergency preparedness in The Gambia.
By investing in innovation and regional collaboration, NDMA reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding communities, reducing disaster risks, and building resilience against natural and climate-related hazards.

To strengthen disaster risk governance, the Kanifing Municipal, Banjul City Council, and West Coast Regional Disaster Management Committees convened their quarterly Disaster Coordination meetings. The discussions covered the national disaster outlook, municipal achievements, ongoing challenges in disaster risk reduction, and advanced dialogue on the National Disaster Risk Mitigation Plan (2025–2033).
As the rainy season heightens risks of floods, windstorms, and related emergencies, this coordination platform serves as a critical space for humanitarian actors to align strategies, share updates, and reinforce preparedness measures that protect vulnerable communities.
The NDMA expresses sincere appreciation to UNICEF for funding this important interface, which strengthens collaboration and resilience-building efforts across the country.

Building on a successful orientation, the National Disaster Management Agency has deployed 18 trained volunteers across nine wards along the Kotu Stream Corridor for a 10-day house-to -house sensitization campaign on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). This initiative is strategically designed to disseminate critical messages on flood preparedness, windstorm safety, domestic fire prevention, and sustainable waste management. By promoting behavioural change, the campaign seeks to strengthen resilience and reduce vulnerabilities within communities most at risk.
This grassroots effort reflects NDMA’s commitment to community-led disaster risk reduction, ensuring that citizens are empowered with knowledge and practical measures to safeguard lives, livelihoods, and the environment. It also underscores the importance of integrating local action into national resilience frameworks.
NDMA extends its profound appreciation to the WACA Project, the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources (MECCNAR), and the World Bank for their invaluable partnership and support. Their collaboration has been instrumental in advancing this initiative and reinforcing the collective drive towards a safer, stronger, and more resilient Gambia.
