Financial barriers continue to prevent many qualified students in The Gambia from accessing and completing Higher and Technical Education, limiting individual opportunity and National Development.

The Students Revolving Loan Scheme - The Gambia (SRLS) was created to change this reality.

Access to higher Education should depend on ability and ambition, not financial constraints.

At the SRLS, we remain committed to expanding equitable access to education and will continue to share updates as the Scheme progresses.

Exactly a week ago, on day one of our Countrywide Stakeholder Engagement, we had a brief stop at the Wassu Stone Circle.

We had a reflective moment that ended up in two conclusions:

1. We hope to work with stakeholders to build a Loan System that will leave a lasting legacy that surpasses the stone circles. Many generations of impact and a strong symbol of heritage and identity.

2. We hope that the Gambia grows and progresses to a stage where no one will need loans to access higher education. Our hope is, a day will come, when students hear about a students loans scheme, they will ask, “what was that for?” The same way that people are asking and struggling to understand what the Stone Circles are meant or were used for.

Go to the people, sit with them, listen and you will learn more than you ever thought you would.

Stakeholder Engagement with NAVSTI

The Students Revolving Loan Scheme (SRLS) was pleased to receive a delegation from the National Association of Vocational and Skills Training Institutes (NAVSTI) as part of our ongoing stakeholder consultation for the development of the SRLS Strategic Plan and Loan Policy.

The delegation, led by Madam Fatou Saine Gaye, engaged the SRLS team in a productive discussion, providing valuable insights drawn from their experience within the TVET sector. Their contributions highlighted key priorities, practical considerations, and institutional realities that will help inform the design and implementation of a responsive and inclusive student financing system.

This engagement underscores the importance of collaboration with TVET stakeholders in ensuring that the SRLS effectively supports skills development and expands access to vocational and technical education across The Gambia. We sincerely appreciate NAVSTI for their time, expertise, and commitment to shaping a system that reflects the needs of all learners.

Day 4: Final Day of the SRLS Stakeholder Consultation

Our final day of the countrywide stakeholder consultation brought us to the Lower River Region (LRR), marking the conclusion of an engaging and insightful nationwide exercise.

We began the day with a courtesy visit to the Governor of LRR, reinforcing the importance of regional leadership in shaping inclusive and responsive student financing policies. The team then engaged with students and staff at the Scout Skill Training Center in Soma, followed by visits to the School of Enrolled Nurses in Mansa Konko and the USET TVET Center in Ndemban.

Across all engagements, we received valuable perspectives on student needs, institutional realities, and opportunities for strengthening access to education through sustainable financing.

As we conclude this nationwide consultation, we extend our sincere appreciation to all stakeholders, regional authorities, training institutions, students, and media partners who contributed their time, insights, and support. The inputs gathered over the past four days will play a critical role in shaping the SRLS Strategic Plan and Loan Policy, ensuring that they reflect the diverse realities across the country.

We remain committed to building a student financing system that is inclusive, responsive, and sustainable.
