For any to visit Santorini or Mykonos but wincing at the cost? Ios island is an amazing alternative, offering the best of both Greek islands, all in one!

This island is seriously underrated, often written off as an island for school leavers and backpackers. The coastline is dominated by dramatic cliffs, with whitewashed villages perched on top. You’ll find charming tavernas serving fresh seafood for a fraction of what you’d pay in Mykonos, and boutique hotels and guesthouses that don’t charge Santorini rates just for a sea view.

🗓 Best Time to Visit:
May–June and September are perfect for warm weather, swimmable beaches, and less crowds. I visited in early June and it felt like we had the island to ourselves! July–August is peak party season if you’re after nightlife.

🚢 How to Get There:
There’s no airport on Ios! The best way to reach it is by ferry from Santorini (35 mins), Naxos (40 mins), or Athens (Piraeus port – 4 to 7 hours).

🏨 Where to Stay:
- Mylopotas Beach: chilled beach town with restaurants and a couple of laid-back beach clubs
- Chora (Ios Town): Great for restaurants, bars, and pretty streets
- Port or Magganari: Quieter if you’re after full-on relaxation

- Kolitsani

Ios is easy to get to, specially if you’re already island-hopping in Greece. The Chora can get noisy in peak season but the island is surprisingly big and there are so many peaceful corners that barely anyone visits.
