⚠️ Media report increased sightings of the silver-cheeked toadfish in Greek waters. Experts say it is not considered particularly aggressive toward humans, though isolated encounters with swimmers and fishermen have occasionally been reported. Even so, while you're enjoying your days at the beach, it’s a good idea to know what to do in the unlikely event of a close encounter.

🧼 Clean the wound immediately with plenty of clean running water and soap
⛔ Avoid using antiseptics unless advised by a doctor
🩹 Apply steady pressure with a clean cloth or bandage
⬆️ Keep the injured area elevated if there is bleeding
🏥 Seek medical attention as soon as possible – bites may require specialist care

In an emergency:
📞 Call 166 (ambulance) or 112 (European emergency number)

🚫 Do not consume this fish – it contains a dangerous toxin.

⚠️ Useful tip: Get Civil Protection alerts for areas in Greece – even when you're not there.
Sign up to Greece’s Civil Protection service to receive notifications (SMS, email or calls) for up to three locations of your choice.

✅ This can be helpful if you:
✔️ Own a property in Greece but don’t live there full-time
✔️ Have family or friends in another part of the country
✔️ Want to stay informed about risks (e.g. wildfires, extreme weather) in specific areas

📱 You’ll still receive emergency alerts automatically on your smartphone when you’re in an affected area.

It was a pleasure for our Consular Team to meet with ‘Eliza’ NGO, which focuses on preventing and promoting safeguarding practices.

We look forward to working more closely together to help connect UK nationals in Greece with the right support when they need it.

You can reach out to ‘Eliza’ if you have concerns about a child’s safety, including support and guidance for parents, carers, and anyone worried about a child.

This day can bring up lots of different feelings. While many are celebrating, we’re also sending love to anyone who finds today difficult, for whatever reason. 💙
