Fleming is an expert on the religious cultures of the Mediterranean and the author of Greece, a Jewish History. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, she has been recognized as a Commander in the Greek Order of Beneficence, a Chevalière in the French Legion of Honor, and a Commandeure in the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

In her final lecture, “𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗸𝘀: 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗝𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆,” Fleming will explore the fascinating intersections of Greek Jewish identity, Mediterranean culture, Judaism, and Hellenism.

Ιωάννης Γεννάδιος και παριζιάνικες σοκολάτες!

Γνωρίζατε ότι ο Ιωάννης Γεννάδιος απεικονίστηκε σε συλλεκτική σειρά καρτών σοκολάτας;

Αυτή η όμορφη χρωμολιθόγραφη διαφημιστική κάρτα, από τις συλλογές της Γενναδείου Βιβλιοθήκης, εκδόθηκε από την παρισινή σοκολατοποιία Guérin-Boutron & Fils ως μέρος της σειράς Livre d'Or des célébrités contemporaines (αρ. 665), η οποία κυκλοφόρησε από το 1903.

Οι καλαίσθητες αυτές κάρτες περιλαμβάνονταν στις σοκολάτες της εταιρείας και ενθάρρυναν το κοινό να συλλέγει πορτρέτα σημαντικών προσωπικοτήτων της εποχής, τα οποία μπορούσαν να συγκεντρωθούν στα λευκώματα Livre d'Or. Στην πίσω όψη, ο Γεννάδιος αναφέρεται ως Έλληνας πρέσβης στη Διάσκεψη του Λονδίνου, ενώ παράλληλα διαφημίζονται τα προϊόντα της Guérin-Boutron.

Η σοκολατοποιία Guérin-Boutron, που ιδρύθηκε το 1775, συγκαταλεγόταν στους πρωτοπόρους της εικονογραφημένης διαφήμισης στη Γαλλία. Μια μικρή συλλεκτική κάρτα, ένα γλυκό κομμάτι ιστορίας από τις συλλογές της Γενναδείου Βιβλιοθήκης.

Joannes Gennadius and Parisian Chocolates!

Did you know that Joannes Gennadius was featured on a collectible chocolate card?

This charming chromolithographic trade card, preserved in the Gennadius Library, was issued by the Paris chocolate manufacturer Guérin-Boutron & Fils as part of its Livre d'Or des célébrités contemporaines series (no. 665), first published from 1903. These beautifully printed cards were enclosed with the company's chocolate products and encouraged customers to collect portraits of notable contemporary personalities, which could be assembled in the Livre d'Or albums.

The reverse identifies Gennadius as the Greek ambassador at the London Conference and advertises Guérin-Boutron chocolates.

Founded in 1775, Guérin-Boutron was among the pioneers of illustrated advertising in France, making this charming trade card a sweet piece of history from the Gennadius Library's collections

Guided tours take place every Thursday at 6.00 p.m. No registration is required.

Zoë Sarbanes Pappas Senior Fellowship in the Study of Medieval though Modern Greece at the Gennadius Library

The Sarbanes Pappas Fellow will use the resources and collections of the Gennadius Library and the School to pursue research on a project that enriches the academic program of the School. Fellows will participate in the academic life of the School in a variety of ways, including: mentoring Gennadius Library fellows, participating in the academic programming of the Gennadius Library, offering occasional seminar presentations, and organizing a colloquium, an exhibition, or some other activity in the subject of their expertise.

Deadline: October 31, 2026

Duration: Academic year, early September 2027 to end of May 2028.

Eligibility: An established scholar working in any area related to the study of Greece in the Medieval through Modern periods for a project that benefits from the use of the Gennadius Library, and/or School Archives, or other related sources.

Award: Stipend, waiver of School membership fees, round-trip coach airfare to Athens, and lunches at Loring Hall (Monday through Friday) for the fellow. An additional stipend available for the fellow to use in developing and presenting contributions to the academic life of the Library.

Κάθε πέντε χρόνια, επιστήμονες από όλο τον κόσμο συναντώνται για να συζητήσουν τις τελευταίες εξελίξεις στις βυζαντινές σπουδές. Φέτος, η Βιέννη φιλοξενεί το συνέδριο με θέμα «Το Βυζάντιο μετά το Βυζάντιο».

Η διευθύντρια της Γενναδείου, Μαρία Γεωργοπούλου, συμμετείχε σε στρογγυλή τράπεζα για τη μεταβυζαντινή τέχνη στον ελλαδικό χώρο κατά την Οθωμανική εποχή.
