🏛️ Goudi Metropolitan Park: Half a Century of Residents’ Struggle
From demolition to the next chapter: turning the vision for Goudi Metropolitan Park into reality
Two days after the unanimous decision of the Athens City Council following a proposal by Mayor Haris Doukas to remove the fire-damaged building and accelerate the procedures for Goudi Metropolitan Park, the demolition of the former Olympic Badminton Centre began on the instructions of the Ministry of National Defence.
Built for the 2004 Olympic Games under an explicit commitment that its use would be temporary, the building remained in place for 22 years, occupying valuable space within the area planned for the Metropolitan Park.
📜 Half a century of citizens’ struggle and now a first step
The story began in 1977, when 965 acres of the Goudi military area were transferred to the Municipalities of Athens and Zografou for the creation of a major public urban park.
The process was subsequently put on hold in the context of the Olympic Games. Attempts to make facilities such as Badminton permanent met with persistent opposition from residents and civic organisations, culminating in Council of State ruling 1970/2012, following an appeal by residents and organisations.
The 2011 Presidential Decree also explicitly provided for the removal of the building once the concession period expired.
At the heart of this long-standing effort was the Goudi Metropolitan Park Action Committee, active since the early 1990s. Its members, including Michalis Zoidis — who also served for 15 years as president of the historic Ano Ampelokipi residents’ association consistently put forward concrete proposals and kept the demand for the park alive in public debate.
Many others contributed to this effort, including lawyers Kostas Papadakis, member of the Anatreptiki Symmachia movement in Athens and for one year a municipal councillor, and the late Kostas Diakos, ecologist and head of the ecological political group in the Attica Region.
🗳️ Nikos Chrysogelos: “The city needs to breathe”
During the discussion on the resolution, Nikos Chrysogelos, Municipal Councillor responsible for the Climate Pact and Social Economy, stressed that the issue goes far beyond the demolition of a single building. It is about the city’s ability to adapt and remain resilient in the face of the climate crisis.
“It is a matter of suffocation at this point. We are living under a climate emergency. We see it in the city and experience it in our everyday lives; it is not something distant. We do not have many years left to act.
This is not simply about demolishing a building. It must be a mobilisation aimed at allowing the city to breathe.
Comprehensive action is needed now to cool the city and to ensure that Goudi Metropolitan Park can withstand the new climate conditions and contribute to cooling Athens.
Athens resembles an island surrounded on all sides by motorways, while many areas are affected by air pollution and high temperatures. Major interventions are needed, including in the area around the Kifisos and Ano Patissia.”
🌳 The next step
The demolition of Badminton is a first and important step.
The goal now is to move from demolition to implementation: to create a unified Goudi Metropolitan Park one of the largest open public green spaces Athens could gain.
A vision that has been kept alive for half a century by residents, civic organisations and people who refused to let it disappear from the public agenda.
The next chapter is about turning that vision into reality and giving Athens more space to breathe.
