“MARATHON RUNNERS – THE MARATHON ROUTE”
Painting Exhibition:
Alexandros Papakonstantinou

Exhibition duration: from November 2 to November 10, 2025

As part of the cultural event “Month of Marathon 2025”, the International Marathon Center of Fine Arts (DI.MA.KE.T) and the Marathon Runners Club of the city of Marathon “Telmissos” present a unique painting exhibition featuring the works of Alexandros Papakonstantinou.

The artist’s vision is to highlight the powerful symbolism encapsulated in the historic route from the battlefield of victory to Athens.
The first Marathon runner, after participating in the battle, fought a second battle — pushing his limits — to announce the Great Victory, sacrificing his own life.
He stands as an eternal symbol of endurance, dedication, devotion, and self-sacrifice.
It is to these ideals that the artist wished to pay humble tribute, drawing inspiration from the significance of the Marathon Race as it is interpreted historically, athletically, and culturally in the modern era.

The exhibition’s themes focus on the painted depiction of Marathon runners from both ancient and modern times, as well as landscapes connected with the historic route of the Marathon.
Many of these works have already been published abroad, attracting strong interest from experts and art lovers around the world; several belong to important private collections overseas, promoting the ideals of Olympism and the Marathon internationally.

The artist’s wish was for this exhibition — a symbolic “Marathon” in itself, as its presentation in major cities of Greece and abroad is already being planned in collaboration with institutional bodies — to begin in the Municipality of Marathon, where he lives and works, marking the start of its journey in conjunction with the cultural event “Month of Marathon 2025”.

EGYPTIAN GODS IN NEA MAKRI

Excavations in Brexiza (Nea Makri) have discovered the vast complex of the Egyptian gods shrine and the sumptuous baths (balneum), as well as a gigantic ellipsoidal cistern further south.
Herodes Atticus founded the complex around 160 AD. The famous orator, sophist, and benefactor came from Marathon and lived here, and the complex was presumably erected within his land.

The Archaeological Museum of Marathon has designated a unique chamber in its exhibition for the most amazing finds from the Egyptian gods' sanctuary.

THE VICTORY OF MARATHON

Τhe bronze statue of VICTORY of Marathon (NIKH) is an oversized bronze statue of the Greek mythological goddess Nike.

It was placed in Marathon in 2014, at the start of the Authentic Marathon Race and was created by the sculptor Nikos Georgiou.

The work was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Iolandi Papadopoulou-Rolshausen, with the intention of honouring the achievements of our ancestors and serving as an inspiration for modern Greeks.

MARATHON TOMB

Marathon Tomb, the Tomb of the Athenians, is located at the 5th kilometer of the Athens Authentic Marathon. Athens Marathon. The Authentic.
It was constructed after the famous Battle of Marathon (490 BC) and it contains the remains of 192 brave Athenian soldiers that died in that historic battle led by General Miltiades.

In the surrounding area of the Tomb, there is a soldier's marble column with an epigram composed by Simonides of Kea, with the phrase:
«Ἑλλήνων προμαχοῦντες Ἀθηναῖοι Μαραθῶνι χρυσοφόρων Μήδων ἐστόρεσαν δύναμιν.» which means:
The Athenians in Marathon, as defenders of the Hellenes, destroyed the might of the golden-dressed Medes.

The battle of Marathon, one of the most important battles of the Ancient World and a defining moment for the Western Civilization, was a victory of utmost importance for the Athenians. Its outcome prevented spread of the Persians in Europe, by providing Athens the opportunity to emerge into a core of political thought, philosophy, art, letters and sciences during the Golden Age of Pericles.

THE MARATHON BOY

The Marathon boy of Ephebe is a
bronze sculpture of a young athlete that was found by fishermen in the bay of Marathon in 1925.
This almost intact statue is one of the finest of the Classical period. It dates back to 340-330 BC.

The statue probably depicts the young winner of a contest, as is suggested by the band on his head which ends in an upright leaf above the forehead.

The beauty and innocence of youth is reflected in the face of this young athlete.

The object he held in his raised right hand is not preserved.
It is also unclear what he held in his left hand, toward which he turns his head and gazes steadily. The inlaid eyes were made of white stone with yellowish glass paste for the irises.

The harmonic proportions of the body, the mild fluid musculature, the smooth transitions from one surface to the other, the almost transverse posture of the body and the free but peaceful movement of the figure in space connect the work with the Praxiteles School and place it between the masterpieces of the Late Classical period.

You can either admire the original in the Archaeological Museum of Athens or the copy in the Archaeological Museum of Marathon.
