Guyana EU FLEGT VPA Guyana-EU Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade Voluntary Partnership Agreement (FLEGT VPA)

The European Union Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade Voluntary Partnership Agreement commenced formally in March of 2012. The EU FLEGT VPA (Voluntary Partnership Agreement) is an initiative birthed in the EU in an effort to address the issue of illegal logging and the trade in illegal timber. The Agreement, once signed with Partner countries (timber-producing countries) such as Guyana will see the establishment of a Legality Assurance System in which all timber and timber products covered under the Agreement will have to confirm to. The National Implementation Working Group (NIWG) is a multi-stakeholder group responsible for monitoring the VPA and GTLAS (Guyana Timber Legality System) implementation. The VPA once signed will allow the easy passage of agreed timber and timber products into the EU market.

Manawarin - The FLEGT team from the Guyana Forestry Commission, along with representatives from the EPA - Guyana, the Guyana_Revenue_Authority, the Ministry of Labour & Manpower Planning Guyana, and the National Insurance Scheme - Guyana, concluded its Region 1 outreach last Friday, October 16. The session, welcomed by the Toshao, Village Council Members, FSOs, and village members, is part of the EU-funded outreach under the FLEGT VPA Programme, implemented by IICA Guyana.

A representative from the National Toshaos Council also accompanied the team and shared information about the forestry helpdesk and training opportunities for Amerindian villages.

This activity focuses on strengthening participatory capacity, improving compliance, and conducting a needs assessment with Amerindian and community-based forestry stakeholders. FSOs are also introduced to the Digital Wood Tracking System (dWTS) and its benefits, and registered as users in preparation for the system’s rollout and adoption across the forest sector.

Waramuri - On Thursday, October 15, the Guyana Forestry Commission’s FLEGT team, alongside representatives from EPA - Guyana, the Guyana_Revenue_Authority, the Ministry of Labour & Manpower Planning Guyana, and the National Insurance Scheme - Guyana, held an outreach clinic with the Toshao, Village Council members, and residents. The clinic brought essential services like TIN and NIS registration, practical guidance, and support directly to the community.

This is part of the EU-funded outreach under the FLEGT VPA Programme, implemented by IICA Guyana.
