Providing Quality Care for Quality Life

Alternative to Care Homes
Understanding the difference between home care services and the services offered by a care home will be crucial in helping you decide whether we suit your needs or not. We Personalize Your Care
Residential care homes cannot offer you one of the most important things in your life: your home. That is perhaps the greatest advantage of

a care at home service, the ability to enjoy the familiar surroundings that many of us have spent years of our lives in. Over and above this, the support you will receive in residential care homes or some hospitals cannot be customized and personalized to your needs to the same degree that our care at home service can offer. We Understand Your Specific Needs
All of us are different; we have our own likes and dislikes. At Essential Care, we mould our services around you, and do not expect you to mould around our services. Whether you choose our hourly care services or 24 hour live-in care, you will always have the undivided attention of our carers. They understand and promote you to make your own decisions, from the small things such as what you would want for breakfast to the bigger questions of how to live your life. We Know Money Matters
Making the right decision when it comes to financing care services for yourself or your family is often confusing. Our Care Supervisors are well-informed and aware of your options in both the home care and care home sectors. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to give us a call at 592 684-2418.

-We perform criminal and background checks on all our employees

-We provide an RN on call 24/7

-We provide care to enable individuals to reach their highest functional level

-We work hand-in-hand with doctors, patients, and family members

Hiring a Non-Medical Home Caregiver Following Surgery

The recovery time for a major surgery, such as a hip replacement or open heart surgery, can last anywhere from weeks to months. As we age, our body requires more and more time to repair itself from these procedures and it’s not uncommon for seniors to remain in the hospital for longer periods of time following a surgery to allow for proper healing. However once released, the risk of injury is still high as seniors adjust to the various restrictions on their home life. A non-medical home caregiver can guide a senior through the recovery process, preventing any setbacks or injuries along the way.
Post-surgery complications often occur because a patient attempts to perform an activity that their physical state simply won’t allow. Stiches tearing and internal bleeding are just two issues that can result from trying to do too much too soon after a surgery. Senior home care professionals may not be medically certified, but they can assist with the daily challenges that follow a surgery. These Activities of Daily Living include:
• Cooking and Cleaning
• Toileting and Bathing
• Medication Preparation
• Wound Cleaning/Redressing
• Appointment Scheduling
Non-medical home caregiving promotes a speedy recovery following an operation in the place where a patient is most comfortable: their home. This is only one of the many benefits of hiring a Essential Care Agency to provide home care services after a surgery, others include:
• Caregivers offer companionship for those living alone. This companionship has proven to slow the aging process and dementia.
• Convenient scheduling means caregivers can be hired for as long as they are needed to aid in post-op recovery.
• Compared with other solutions for care after surgery, receiving care in the comforts of their own home is the most cost effective and comfortable for the patient.
If you or a loved one is having surgery in the near future, consider hiring an in-home caregiver to aid in the recovery. Essential Care Agency will provide you with a qualified personal care giver who will provide your home care services. Learn more by contacting Essential Care Agency today!

Laughing Your Way to Better Health – It Can Really Happen!

There may be more truth to the saying “Laughter is the best medicine” than once thought. For years, scientists have marveled at the health benefits of a good chuckle. According to their research, humans change physiologically when we laugh. Our blood pressure and pulse elevate and we breathe faster, pushing more oxygen to our tissues. Some researchers even compare a hearty laugh’s ability to raise our heart rate to vigorous exercise.
For home care patients living with chronic illnesses, laughter may be especially beneficial. Numerous studies have shown that the most convincing benefit of laughter is its ability to dull pain. Those with painful chronic illnesses have consistently reported some relief from pain while laughing. No matter their specific needs, children to senior home care patients can all benefit from a good laugh.
Regular laughing throughout the day has consistently been connected to:
Sleeping Better: 10 minutes of laughing before sleep can help people relax and sleep better throughout the night.

Strengthened Immune System: Laughing can act like a pump to cycle fluids through the lymphatic system, filtering them and leaving them better prepared to fight sickness.

Improved Circulation: Blood vessels throughout the body expand and contract more fluidly when laughing which improves blood flow to the heart.

Decreased Blood Sugar Levels: Studies have shown that in-home care patients with diabetes can lower their blood sugar level simply by laughing.
Perhaps the most obvious (and most beneficial) benefit of laughter is its ability to improve our mood. Laughing also has many social benefits as it allows us to better bond with and create relationships with those around us.
The home care professionals at Essential Care Agency office are always laughing and we encourage our Care Givers to laugh as often as possible as well! Incorporating humor into a home care plan is an easy way to improve the health of home care clients with a smile.

Essential Care Agency provides support for the elderly, disabled, sick and people recovering from illnesses or in need of Professional Home-Based Care.

What Can Home Care Do For You?

Find Support for Persons With Chronic Medical Conditions.

Millions of people currently live with a chronic medical disease. While their condition may not prevent them from maintaining a normal lifestyle, they do face challenges every day. No matter your age, simply keeping medications organized and getting to doctor’s appointments can be a struggle.

This is where a home care professional comes in. A personal care assistant can help you manage a medical condition and allow you to live a better life. At Essential Care Agency, we work with personal care assistants that care for individuals living with:
• Diabetes
• Epilepsy
• Cancer
• HIV
• And other conditions

Along with medication and appointment assistance, a personal care giver will help with many other daily tasks such as dressing, toileting, and food preparation. But perhaps the most important benefit is the morale boosting friendship and camaraderie that comes with daily visits.

Support for Family Caregivers

In many cases, a family member or friend will offer to provide home care for the individual affected by a chronic medical condition. This type of at-home care is often done out of love and with no compensation; however, this does not need to be the case. Essential Care Agency can provide a care giver to give respite to the family care giver if they need a break.

Transitional Care

Transitional care is a type of home care that is provided to individuals while moving between different health care facilities. This care can be provided during the wait time before moving into a senior living facility or upon moving home after a major surgery. Transitional care is extremely beneficial for those living with chronic medical conditions and helps them to adjust back to home life or to new care environments.

This year, Essential Care Agency is celebrating 4 years of helping our Guyanese seniors with their home care needs.

Essential Care Agency HOME CARE Service for the Elderly, Sick, Disabled

What do you do when your elderly mother needs someone to help with her daily tasks around her home, but no family member is available to assist her? What if your elderly father insists on continuing to live in his own home, but he is no longer able to take care of personal hygiene tasks on his own? When your elderly loved one’s health has deteriorated to the point where it is no longer safe for him or her to be left alone at home for long periods of time, what are your options? Many older Guyanese are determined to remain living in their own home as long as possible. Their home is familiar; it is connected to memories and a sense of independence. In order to remain at home, one option that is available to seniors and their families is to call on the services of Essential Care Agency Inc.

We offer a wide array of service to assist seniors with daily living tasks by sending a home care worker, called a caregiver, into seniors’ homes. Caregivers are hired, trained and scheduled to visit them in the comforts of their own home.

They can choose how often a caregiver comes to their home. A caregiver could come once a day for a few hours or come for eight hours a day, five days a week. Essential Care Agency can even arrange for caregivers to work in shifts, covering 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Whatever their needs, our caregivers are there to assist with the basic tasks of daily living.

Here are some basic things that a caregiver can usually help with:

• Bathing, toileting and personal hygiene needs.
• Grooming and dressing.
• Mobility, moving around the house or yard.
• Transportation to the doctor or other appointments.
• Running errands and doing the household shopping.
• Light housework and cooking/Feeding
• Medication reminders.
• Taking care of pets.
• Companionship: reading a book out loud, playing a game, having a conversation, going for a short walk, etc.

A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS TO ALL

And

May the year 2017 be your best ever!

As we approach the end of 2016, we will like to pause and reflect on the exceeding good year we had.

Special thank you to all our Care Givers, Nannies, Domestic carers, Management and Senior staff.

Special thank you to all our clients

Special thank you to all our well-wishers and supporters.

Essential Care Agency would not be here had it not been for all of you.

Our year was filled with highs. We were fortunate to be able to serve the Guyanese community, thus giving back, because we care.

At the beginning of the year, we took the decision to continue our Give back “because we care” initiative, that we had started last year.

We supported the Influential Millennials Youth group with their numerous activities throughout the year. This group is a vibrant youth organisation that has been supporting their community for some time. Credit to all the youths and to Nakisha Allen, the driving force and a prenominal youth leader. Essential Care Agency gave monetary and other contributions like laptop, tablets, school bags and trophies.

We had our Staff Development day in April, where staff participated in personal and professional development activities. We also had our staff and family picnic in August-a time for the staff to relax and have a fun day with their colleagues and families. On that same day, persons were single out and received commendations for their “Go Getter” attitude. One such person was elevated to the post of Manager for our Georgetown branch office. Deon Holder, is still our Manager in Georgetown and is doing an amazing job. All children of our staff received school bags and stationery.

In August, we also welcome back two of our past staff and reopened our office in Berbice. Nickesha McPherson and Nikita Wong. Nickesha is now our Georgetown Senior Care supervisor and Nikita our Berbice Branch manager.

Our CEO, Mrs Elwyn Boyle took some time out in August to facilitate a FREE Personal Development course, GOALS, for the Guyana Foundation. The Guyana Foundation, supports individuals with Mental Health issues. This was the first time this UK accredited course was facilitated in Guyana.

We had a packed October. During this month we held two FREE Health outreach for the communities in Vreedenhoop and New Amsterdam. We joined forces with the health services in Vreedenhoop and was supported by the Mayor of New Amsterdam in our efforts to bring FREE blood sugar and pressure testing services to these communities. Some members even received new blood pressure machines and walking sticks on the day. In this month, we even managed to squeeze in a visit to Bartica to meet with community leaders with the intentions of offering the community our services in the New Year.

We also celebrated World Teachers’ Day, where we honoured all Guyanese teachers and singled out our unsung hero, Ms Rosemond, for her unselfish dedication to tutoring the young minds in her community.
International Day of Older Persons was also celebrated with our clients and Guyana’s elderly folks in October. Five very deserving elderly persons received food bags

In November we collaborated with the Ministry of Public health and PAHO and participated in a day of outreach at Durban Park. Persons received FREE health checks from Essential Care Agency.

For the latter part of this year, we decided to adopt a “Charity begins at Home” slogan. We felt that those closest to us are sometimes overlooked. We set out to creating an environment that foster support for our staff. Two of our senior staff, Ms Nickesha McPherson and Deon Holder graduated from their course of study in Elderly Care and Public Speaking respectively. Nickesha graduated with distinction and Deon was adjudged Valedictorian for her class. Congratulations to these two very inspirational members of our management team.

And in December, all staff also received a food bag and personal gift as a thank you from Essential Care Agency CEO Elwyn Boyle.

Essential Care Agency continues to grow its client base and will be continuing its “giving back” in 2017. We look forward to servicing Guyana’s communities.

We have a lot to be thankful for................

Providing Home Care for Those Living with HIV/AIDS

According to Dr. Shamdeo Persaud-Guyana’s Chief Medical Officer, the “National AIDS campaign needs to be reviewed.”

“People are not scared of HIV anymore; if they were, they would have been more careful. They know that there is treatment and that the treatment works so they believe that they no longer have to worry.”

Dr Shamdeo Persaud went on to state that, “As it stands now, the campaign has the same old message: HIV/AIDS is a dangerous disease use a condom or abstain. It can’t work anymore…the figures are showing us that. We need to come up with new ways to reach the population.” AND so the fight continues.......

(Exert from Kaieteur Newspaper)

HIV/AIDS has always been one of those diseases with a “taboo” attached to it. Fear of the unknown-as there is still lots to learn about this disease-has caused much divide in families and society at large.

Thus the latest news in the developed world that there is a pill that can prevent HIV infection if taken prior to the contraction of same is extremely welcoming news.

"The pill that was shown to be safe and to help block HIV infection is called “Truvada” (pronounced tru vá duh). Truvada is a combination of two drugs (tenofovir and emtricitabine). If you take PrEP daily, the presence of the medicine in your bloodstream can often stop HIV from taking hold and spreading in your body."

Conversely, there are some views that this pill will encourage unsafe sex....yet another problem to be faced!

Here at Essential care Agency Guyana, we have helped a number of families by providing caregivers who provided our home care services for a loved one living with HIV/AIDS. While there is currently no cure for HIV/AIDS, the symptoms can be treated to allow individuals to comfortably continue their day-to-day life. In home supportive services compliment these treatments by fostering a health focused and supportive environment for the individual.
When it comes to providing HIV/AIDS home care, there are three areas that our caregivers focus on:

PROPER NUTRITION
Consuming healthy foods is essential to help maintain a strong immunes system and can even help treatments be more effective. As a care provider, we will develop a meal plan that emphasizes healthy foods and always take care to prepare food properly and safely.

Avoid ALCOHOL and DRUGS
HIV/AIDS patients are statistically more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol; which can interfere with treatment and lead to even more dangerous health problems. As a home caregiver, we actively monitor our client for signs of excessive alcohol or drug use and guide them towards help if necessary.

TREATMENT
Treatments often include many different medications that can be confusing for a patient to keep track of and understand. Our personal care assistant, are trained to work with our clients treatment plans and cad give guidance to develop a clear treatment schedule that will clearly show what and when medications should be taken as well as tracking when they will need to be refilled.

HIV/AIDS home caregivers provide an invaluable service for our clients. Essential Care Agency is proud to support the work of these personal care assistants as they provide a better quality of life for the individuals they care for. Contact us today on 684-2418/ 2276658 and 694-6541 to learn more about home care giving services for HIV/AIDS or how our home care professionals can support you!

Eating Right for Seniors: Curbing the Sweet Tooth

Today, we present the last in our series of article on Seniors Diet.

It’s no secret that seniors like to eat sweets. This growing love of sugar among the elderly is the result of a natural human progression that we will all experience.

The sense of taste is directly correlated to the number and sensitivity of taste buds. Humans have between 10,000 and 15,000 taste buds at our best. However, as we age we lose taste buds and the ones we have left become increasingly less sensitive. As a result, sweets and salts take over our cravings as we try to get the same enjoyment out of eating. Unfortunately, these foods often come with increased calorie counts and greater amounts of fat. The lack of nutritional value in these foods can be particularly dangerous for a senior’s diet, putting them at risk for severe health issues.

Our home care professionals experience this every day while working to keep their clients eating healthy. It can be hard to curb the senior sweet tooth, but there are good tactics to keep them eating healthy while still enjoying the foods they eat. Below are some healthy snacks that make for great substitutes to sugary treats:
• Cut fruit mixed with flavored yogurt
• Applesauce with cinnamon
• Seedless grapes with honey
• Vegetables with nut butter dip

If a senior has trouble swallowing or digesting solids, a great solution is blended drinks. Preparing fruit smoothies can be a healthy treat that also has great nutritional benefits.

When it comes to preparing foods for seniors, it’s important to not deny them their cravings. It’s also important to maintain a good balance of sugary treats with nutritional food options in a senior meal plan.

With our home care resources and professional support, we can provide a daily nutritious meal, for your seniors, directly to their door.
