May Is Internal Audit Month

The Institute of Internal Auditors, Guyana Chapter Inc. is pleased to inform its stakeholders that May has been designated by the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) as Internal Audit Awareness Month. This event has been observed globally since the 1990s to recognize and promote the work of internal auditors.

This month's event is celebrated through a variety of mediums, including outreach advocacy and social media; the Guyana Chapter customarily celebrate Internal Audit Awareness Month firstly by the publishing of a Proclamation following hosting of a seminars during the month of May.
The Guyana Chapter would like to encourage all of it members and non-members to join in celebrating Internal Audit Awareness Month to create the awareness and promote the profession.
The internal audit profession is dynamic and keeps evolving as with rapid changes of technology, businesses and new industries emerging, changes in business process etc.; present new challenges to keep up with that pace of finding ways to adapt audit plan to add value.
Being cognizant of those dynamics , the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) has made a paradigm shift by the recent release of the updated International Professional Practices Framework (IPPF), which mandates that internal audit functions adopt the new Global Internal Audit Standards by January 9, 2025.The revised IPPF replace the 2017 version; this is positive development and therefore add more value to the profession.
Following the holding of the Annual General Meeting in January 2025, the Chapter is now more structured to promote and serve the internal audit profession by focusing more on non-traditional membership engagement initiatives.
The Guyana Chapter would like to express its sincere gratitude to each one of its members and appreciate the invaluable you contribution made to the profession over the years and looking forward for your continued support to grow the internal audit profession in Guyana.

Our Story

HISTORY :

Mr. Lal Balkaran is the founder of the IIA-Guyana Chapter which he started on January 24, 2000 at the then Park Hotel in Main Street, Georgetown, Guyana. The Charter for the Chapter was granted AFTERWARDS at the April 2000 Leadership Conference at IIA Global HQ in April 2000 in Orlando, Florida when he presented the resolution signed by those in attendance at the Jan 24 inaugural meeting.

Please see excerpts of his opening speech and the ‘AuditWire News’ from IIA HQ back in 2000.

Following a public meeting held in Guyana on January 24, 2000, a resolution was signed for the formation of a Guyana Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors. The event capped a nearly five months effort by Mr. Lal Balkaran, a Canadian citizen of Guyanese origin who at that time served as the Secretary of the Toronto Chapter.
