The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and by extension the Government of Guyana extends heartiest congratulations to the Old Fort Hockey Club for outstanding performances over the weekend at the Magnolia Hockey Club’s Indoor tournament in Trinidad and Tobago.

Playing at the Woodbrook Youth Facility, Old Fort’s Under-17 Girls Hockey Team trounced the host team, Magnolia 5-2 in the championship match to win the gold medal. Makayla Poole was named the Most Valuable Player with teammates Trinity Greaves carting off the Most Goals prize and Jaslyn Smith, the Best Goalkeeper award.

Old Fort entered two teams in the Boys U-17 tournament with one team taking the bronze medal and the other ending fourth. Jose Rodrigues was named the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament.

In the Under-21 Female Division, the Guyanese team took the bronze medal after defeating Checkers 5-2 to cap a fine weekend for the Golden Arrowhead.

The Old Fort Under-17 Teams were made up of students from North Ruimveldt Multilateral Secondary, Tutorial High, Campbellville Secondary, St. Winefride Secondary, St. Roses High, St. Joseph High, and Marian Academy.

All the students are part of the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) and Old Fort Academy Coaching Programme which forms part of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS), National Sports Academy aimed at building out a firm foundation for youth development in Guyana.

Guyana Pivots to Sports Science and Education with Launch of GOAL Scholarships.

​The launch of the GOAL Sports Scholarship Programme marks a major policy shift for Guyana’s sports sector—moving beyond physical infrastructure to build the intellectual, administrative, and scientific architecture required for a modern, revenue-generating sports industry.

​Bridging Infrastructure, Education, and Mental Performance
While the government continues its rollout of multi-million-dollar assets including new chess, boxing, racket, and track facilities Minister Steven Jacobs emphasized that concrete structures yield limited returns without educated professionals to manage them.

The targeted GOAL scholarships directly address this national deficit through courses in Sports Management, Facilities Management, and Sports Psychology.

​Highlighting the mental hurdles of elite athletes like record-breaking swimmer Raekwon Noel, Minister Jacobs advocated for normalizing sports psychology and urged young stars to pursue dual career models, pointing to local athlete-scholars like table tennis champion turned lawyer Shemar Britton.

​Transitioning to Structured, Science Driven Systems
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson Jr. reinforced that long-term athletic success requires structured, science-driven development models rather than sole reliance on raw talent. Citing the historical decline of West Indies cricket dominance, Minister Ramson noted that rival nations surpassed the region by investing heavily in sports science, technology, and academies. He pointed to Cuba’s 244 Olympic medals compared to Spain’s 181 as proof that deliberate, structured sports education can outperform far wealthier economies.

Aligned with President Dr. Irfaan Ali’s vision for economic diversification and positioning Guyana as a regional sports destination, the initiative comes ahead of hosting the CARIFTA Games and establishing the country's first high performance centre and sports science lab.

​This athletic modernization parallels broader administrative efficiency across the government, which now utilizes real-time digital project tracking and automated fiscal safeguards to monitor public assets.

By pairing tech-driven state oversight with targeted investments in human capital, Guyana is establishing a fully educated, scientifically backed, and sustainable sporting ecosystem.

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport is continuing its developmental agenda at Belle West Multipurpose Facility in Canal #2, Region 3.

Through the Volunteer Apprenticeship Community Support (VACS) Programme, the Ministry has deployed its tractor with plough and back blade, mini excavator and skid steer to the community playground.

At the request of residents, the Ministry is currently ploughing the playground, back blading will be done and finally it will be rolled using a vi****or roller.

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport will continue work in partnership with residents to enhance their community facilities.
