Happy World Environment Day 2026!

As Guyana continues to pave the way globally through the visionary Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS 2030) and the pioneering Global Biodiversity Alliance, we are reminded that the solutions to our planet's greatest challenges are found in nature itself.

From our vast forests that capture carbon to the wetlands and ecosystems that protect our communities, our natural heritage is our greatest asset. Protecting our rivers, wildlife, and dedicated protected areas isn't just about conservation, it is a direct investment in climate resilience and our collective well-being.

How you can take action today:

♻️ Conserve resources and reduce daily waste.
🌱 Plant native species to support local biodiversity.
🌎 Support and practice environmental stewardship in your community.

Every action counts. Let us be inspired by nature, act for the climate, and safeguard Guyana's remarkable natural treasures for generations to come.

This , we lean into the theme: 'Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.' 🌱🌎

Guyana’s natural ecosystems are our frontline defense against a changing climate. As custodians of a vital portion of the intact Guiana Shield, our country's forests, wetlands, and coastlines do the heavy lifting for global climate stability.

At the Protected Areas Commission (PAC), our mission goes beyond basic conservation. Through the National Protected Areas System (NPAS), we are actively securing high-carbon landscapes and diverse habitats, from the coastal mangrove defenses of Shell Beach to the deep interior rainforests of Kaieteur and the Kanuku Mountains. We are transforming Guyana’s ambitious Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) and international biodiversity targets into tangible, on-the-ground protection.

Protecting our ecosystems is our collective baseline for a sustainable future.

The Protected Areas Commission (PAC) strongly supports this joint initiative by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Guyana Police Force against littering.

We would like to remind all visitors to our urban parks and protected areas across Guyana to dispose of waste responsibly. Keeping these spaces pristine is essential for protecting our diverse wildlife and maintaining beautiful recreational areas for everyone.

Let's do our part to keep Guyana clean, healthy and safe. 🇬🇾🌱

Our rangers made a delightful discovery during routine patrols at Tiger Beach! They captured a glimpse of a Red Brocket Deer (Mazama americana) gracefully navigating the lush coastal vegetation.

While these shy, elusive mammals are typically known for thriving in dense inland forests, seeing one vibrant and active along the coast is a beautiful reminder of the rich, overlapping biodiversity of our protected areas.

📍 Did you know?
Tiger Beach serves as a critical secondary nesting site for endangered sea turtles and is just one of ten distinct beaches that make up the stunning 123 km coastline of the SBPA.

Our rangers on patrol at the Shell Beach Protected Area (SBPA) recently documented a rare and incredibly special moment: a nesting Olive Ridley Sea turtle.

This marks the first physical sighting of this species on our shores since 2020.

As the smallest of all marine turtles, Olive Ridleys are named for their olive-green, heart-shaped shells.

This reinforces the vital importance of wildlife conservation for safeguarding endangered marine life, and strengthens the Protected Areas Commission's (PAC) unwavering commitment to safeguarding Guyana's natural heritage.

Huge kudos go to our dedicated SBPA team, whose relentless, round-the-clock beach patrols make crucial encounters like this possible.

Swipe through the photos to see the turtle herself and the distinct tracks she left on the shore. 📸

The Protected Areas Commission (PAC) was pleased to participate in the recent Region 9 Consultation for Guyana’s NBSAP and 7NR update. The Commission was represented by rangers from the Kanuku Mountains Protected Area (KMPA), ensuring local perspectives on conservation priorities and challenges were included in this vital national dialogue. We look forward to continued collaboration with the EPA - Guyana and all partners.

World Environment Day 2026: Inspired by Nature, For Climate, For Our Future 🌱🌎

Earlier today, the Protected Areas Commission (PAC) joined the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), fellow stakeholders and schools for the World Environment Day Green Walk and Exhibition. This year’s theme, "Inspired by Nature, For Climate, For Our Future” underscores the critical link between ecosystem preservation and climate resilience in Guyana.

During the exhibition held at the National Park, the PAC team was delighted to host an interactive education and awareness booth and engage with students, partners, and visitors on how protected areas serve as our strongest defense against climate change and the backbone of our natural heritage.

A massive congratulations to the EPA for hosting such a successful and impactful event. We are also proud to support the EPA’s "Nah Dutty De Place, Man!" initiative. This national anti-littering and waste management campaign is vital for the maintenance of our urban parks and protected areas.

Our future depends on the actions we take today! Keeping Guyana beautiful starts with us, whether you are in the heart of the city or the depths of the hinterland, let us continue to keep our spaces clean, green and pristine for a healthier Guyana. 🇬🇾
