Our rangers on patrol at the Shell Beach Protected Area (SBPA) recently documented a rare and incredibly special moment: a nesting Olive Ridley Sea turtle. This marks the first physical sighting of this species on our shores since 2020. As the smallest of all marine turtles, Olive Ridleys are named for their olive-green, heart-shaped shells.
This news reinforces the vital importance of wildlife conservation for safeguarding endangered marine life, and strengthens the Protected Areas Commission's (PAC) unwavering commitment to safeguarding Guyana's natural heritage.
Huge kudos go to our dedicated SBPA team, whose relentless, round-the-clock beach patrols make crucial encounters like this possible. Swipe through the photos to see the turtle herself and the distinct tracks she left on the shore.
