Update from the Sub Region 2 area.

The Kwakwani Waterfront, Lamp Island and Jeep Landing are experiencing yet another flood, reminiscent of the 2021 floods that displaced many residents for weeks.

Water levels from the Berbice River continue to rise, and low-lying areas along the waterfront are already inundated. Homes, businesses, and access roads are being affected, with residents reporting water entering yards and threatening property.

As part of the ongoing outreach in Kwakwani, officials from the Regional Democratic Council, Region 10, had a meaningful engagement with religious leaders representing nine churches and denominations from across the community.

The session brought pastors and faith leaders face to face with representatives from the sectors of Agriculture, Education, Public Works, and Administration creating an open space for dialogue, collaboration, and mutual understanding.

Faith leaders took the opportunity to raise concerns, share recommendations, and gain firsthand insight into how key government systems and services operate. This engagement forms part of our preparations leading into Budget 2027, ensuring that the voices of our communities are heard and reflected in the planning process.

FLOOD ASSESSMENT UNDERWAY IN KWAKWANI | REGION 10 RESPONDS!

Region 10 Regional Executive Officer, Dr. Gregory Harris, joined the Kwakwani Neighbourhood Democratic Council Chairwoman , Ms. Michelle Simion, councillors and members of the Region 10 Disaster Preparedness Team on the ground in Kwakwani to conduct a comprehensive flood assessment following recent heavy rainfall that has impacted several communities across the area.

The team received detailed updates on the number of persons affected and the specific areas bearing the brunt of the flooding. Going beyond the numbers, they personally visited affected communities to engage directly with residents listening to their concerns and gaining a firsthand understanding of the real challenges being faced on the ground.

The Civil Defence Commission is actively receiving real time data on the full extent of the flood’s impact, ensuring that response efforts are informed, coordinated, and targeted where they are needed most. Shelters have been activated and are ready to receive displaced residents, and support will be provided to all affected persons without delay.

RDC Region #10 remains committed to standing with our communities during this difficult time. Residents in need of assistance are encouraged to reach out to their nearest designated shelter or contact the relevant authorities.
