Independence means freedom — the power to shape our own future.

For Guyana, that freedom was earned 60 years ago through sacrifice, resilience, and determination, as our founding fathers fought to prove that our nation could govern its own affairs.

Therefore, on May 26, we celebrate more than a historic milestone — we celebrate our identity, our unity, and the freedom to shape our own future. We also honour the leaders, activists, and citizens whose sacrifices paved the way for the democratic society we enjoy today.

Given NDMA’s mandate, we also take this opportunity to reflect on what independence means in the modern world. In this digital age, true national and personal empowerment comes through knowledge, innovation, and digital literacy — having the tools to learn, work, connect, and thrive globally. Digital transformation is key to sustaining our nation’s growth and independence for generations to come. So, as we celebrate our nation’s journey, we hope that you will continue investing in the knowledge and tools that will sustain our independence for generations to come.

Today, 18 May 2026, marks the 43rd anniversary of the establishment of the National Data Management Authority (NDMA), celebrating more than four decades of dedicated service in the digital transformation of Guyana’s public sector.

To fully appreciate NDMA’s enduring legacy, and the expansion of its digital mandate, it is important to reflect on its origins. Although the Authority was formally established under the NDMA Act of 1983, its roots can be traced back to a collaborative initiative launched in 1981 between the Guyana Bauxite Mining Enterprise (GUYMINE) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). In its earliest years, the focus of the programme and the Authority’s work centred on data processing and information systems. More than four decades later, NDMA has evolved significantly in both mandate and operational capacity, with a stronger emphasis on citizen-centred digital services and innovation.

Today, our vision is to serve as the architect of digital advancement for all Guyanese by driving digital transformation shaped by people, policy, and technology. This commitment is reflected in the more than 1700 WiFiGY hotspots established across the country to provide free public Internet access, the innovative use of technology to strengthen public safety, immigration and border control, digital identity, and expand access to ICTs and online government services in Guyana. It is also evident in the growing focus on cybersecurity awareness and online safety within our schools and communities.

As we look ahead, the NDMA remains committed to advancing Guyana’s digital future. Our trajectory points toward the continued expansion of our mission and the steady realisation of a shared national digital vision. We invite all Guyanese to be part of this journey by sharing your comments, ideas, and feedback with us.

Today, the National Data Management Authority (NDMA) hosted a special Pre-Mother’s Day event to honour the incredible mothers within the organisation. During this event, NDMA’s General Manager Mr. Christopher Deen, alongside Deputy General Managers Mr. Orson Smith and Mr. Khemraj Singh, expressed their deep appreciation for the dedication and strength of all mothers.

This sentiment is echoed by the entire NDMA team, and we wish all mothers and mother figures a happy and blessed Mother’s Day 2026.
