上次講到印刷業喺1970年代嘅發展，今日同大家睇吓印刷師傅當年係點樣入行嘅。

翻開一份1980年由前香港訓練局印刷業訓練委員會編製嘅人力調查報告，當年全港就有大約2,300間印刷公司，養活咗超過18,000名打工仔。當時一般印刷技工每月收入大概港幣$1,400至$1,900，技術員級別月入普遍有港幣$1,900至$2,500。不過成為一位技術員都唔係咁易，除咗要有中五學歷，仲要紮紮實實完成四年學徒訓練，跟師傅打好基礎、累積經驗先可以獨當一面。

【Industry Spotlight】Printing Industry

In our last post, we looked at how Hong Kong's printing industry developed during the 1970s. Today, let's find out how printing technicians started their careers.

According to a 1980 manpower survey conducted by the Printing Industry Training Board of the former Hong Kong Training Council, there were about 2,300 printing companies in Hong Kong, employing over 18,000 people. A general printing craftsman earned around HK$1,400 to HK$1,900 per month, while a technician could earn between HK$1,900 and HK$2,500. However becoming a technician was no easy feat: you needed to have completed Form 5 and had to undertake a solid four-year apprenticeship, during which you would learn the fundamentals from a master and gain experience before being able to work independently.

1950年代印刷業步入全盛期，全港有幾百間活字印刷公司。活字印刷最考功夫嘅工序莫過於「執字粒」——師傅要喺成千上萬個鉛字中整齊有序咁揀字、排版，係一門易學難精嘅手藝。

到咗1970年代，由於柯式印刷省卻咗執字排版嘅工序，喺大量印刷彩色圖文時較有優勢，於是逐漸取代活字印刷成為主流。隨後數碼印刷技術嘅出現，令出版同圖文傳播變得更加快捷普及。

講到呢度，不如邀請大家一齊透過一批1970年代嘅館藏照片，走入以前嘅印刷廠房，睇吓唔同印刷機器嘅運作，同埋印刷師傅嘅工作實況。

【Industry Spotlight】Printing Industry

The printing industry reached its peak in the 1950s, with hundreds of movable type printing companies operating in Hong Kong. The most skilled aspect of this process was setting type by hand. Technicians had to pick out individual lead characters from thousands of pieces and arrange them neatly into pages. It was an easy craft to learn but hard to master.

By the 1970s, offset printing technology had become advantageous for printing large quantities of colour materials. Gradually, it replaced movable type printing as the mainstream method. The advent of digital printing made publishing and information sharing even faster and more accessible to everyone.

Now, let's take a look at a collection of archive photos from the 1970s, and step inside a printing house of the past to see different machines in action and the printing technicians at work.

【漫遊離島】馬灣

上個post分享過1960年代嘅馬灣分區圖則，今日再一齊睇下兩張分別攝於1993年同2013年嘅馬灣航拍圖！

對比兩張相，最明顯嘅變化莫過於以前空曠嘅島腰，依家橫跨住一條青嶼幹線，自1997年通車以嚟，呢條幹道將馬灣同青衣及大嶼山連接起嚟，令小島嘅對外交通唔再單靠渡輪。隨住大型住宅屋苑喺2000年代初陸續落成，島上人口亦較昔日增加。兩張相隔20年嘅航拍圖，正好捕捉到馬灣喺近代嘅變化，由漁村風貌綠樹成蔭，換上現代化新面貌。

【Exploring the Outlying Islands】Ma Wan

In our last post, we shared a 1960s zoning plan for Ma Wan. Today, let's take a look at two aerial photos of the island, taken in 1993 and 2013.

Comparing the two, the most striking change is the Lantau Link, which now stretches right across what was once an empty stretch of the island. Opened in 1997, it connected Ma Wan to Tsing Yi and Lantau Island, giving residents a way in and out apart from relying on ferries. In the early 2000s, large housing estates were built on the island, and the population grew significantly compared to the past. These two photos, taken 20 years apart, show how Ma Wan has evolved from a fishing village surrounded by lush plants into a modernised community over recent decades.

【漫遊離島】馬灣

1960年代嘅馬灣遠離塵囂，保留住一片質樸寧靜嘅山海風光，六百多名島民以務農、曬魚乾同造船為生。政府當時會點樣規劃呢個小島呢？翻開呢份1969年嘅《馬灣分區制大綱圖則說明書》，會發現好多意想不到嘅構思！

當年嘅構想，係將馬灣打造成荃灣居民嘅休憩遊樂空間。為咗避免車輛湧入破壞寧靜，政府當年唔考慮興建汽車渡輪碼頭，改為構思鋪設一條貫通馬灣村至島北嘅「小型窄軌機車路」，用新穎別緻嘅交通工具吸引遊人。土地規劃方面，東部沿岸劃作公共海灘；部分地段則容許私人企業興建度假中心、動植物園、魚類博覽館、遊樂場、甚至小型哥爾夫球場。

呢份檔案記錄嘅係馬灣發展規劃嘅一個早期構想，對照返今日嘅馬灣，當年呢份規劃圖則，有冇改變你對馬灣歷史嘅認知？

【Exploring the Outlying Islands】Ma Wan

Far from the hustle and bustle, Ma Wan was a tranquil island of scenic hills and quiet shores in the 1960s, where over 600 locals made a living through farming, drying fish and building boats. How would the government plan to develop this little island back then? Flipping through this 1969 Ma Wan Outline Zoning Plan, you'll find some rather unexpected ideas.

The vision back then was to turn Ma Wan into a leisure and recreation space for residents of Tsuen Wan. To keep vehicles from disturbing the island's tranquility, the government ruled out the idea of building a car ferry pier. Instead, they considered laying a small-gauge tramway linking Ma Wan Village to the north, hoping that this novel mode of transport would draw visitors. As for land use, the eastern beaches were zoned for public recreation, while certain lots were reserved for private enterprises to build holiday camps, botanical and zoological gardens, a fish museum, amusement parks, and even a small golf course.

【Streets in the Archive】Hennessy Road

In our previous post, we looked at Hennessy Road from the 1930s to the 1960s. This time, let’s take a look at an archive photo from the mid-1970s. You can still spot tong lau buildings and small shops lining the street in the photo. Some newer commercial buildings had already appeared on the right, where signs for medicated oil and a Chinese products department store hung. Can you guess where exactly this photo was taken?

【館藏中的街道】軒尼詩道

今日繁忙嘅軒尼詩道，喺百年前仲係維多利亞港嘅海域。

佢嘅誕生就要由1921年講起。當時，政府為咗紓緩中、上環一帶土地不足，開展灣仔海傍東填海工程（海傍馬路當時被稱為海傍東），範圍由軍器廠街到東角（即係現時嘅銅鑼灣）。工程喺1929年完工，為灣仔新增咗約90英畝地。軒尼詩道就係喺呢片新填嘅土地上誕生；同期透過填海而來嘅仲有告士打道、謝斐道、駱克道、分域街、盧押道等多條街道，佢哋一齊建構出灣仔嘅主要交通脈絡。

從1930年代及1960年代嘅館藏舊相，可見軒尼詩道兩旁建滿相連嘅騎樓式唐樓，下舖上居，商店招牌林立；闊落嘅馬路車水馬龍，可見軒尼詩道唔單止係主要幹道，更係繁盛嘅商業地帶。

今日坐上電車沿軒尼詩道緩緩而行，兩旁嘅舊式樓宇大多已經由高樓大廈取代。由海傍到馬路，由唐樓到新廈，一條馬路，見證灣仔呢一帶嘅百年變遷。

【Streets in the Archive】Hennessy Road

The bustling Hennessy Road we see today was once part of Victoria Harbour around a century ago.

Its history traces back to 1921. At that time, to ease the land shortage in Central and Sheung Wan, the government started the reclamation works of Praya East (the road along the seafront was called Praya East back then) in Wan Chai. The reclaimed area stretched from Arsenal Street to East Point (now known as Causeway Bay). The project was completed in 1929, adding about 90 acres of new land to Wan Chai. Hennessy Road was built on this freshly reclaimed land. Other roads built through reclamation at the same time included Gloucester Road, Jaffe Road, Lockhart Road, Fenwick Street, Luard Road and more. Together, they formed Wan Chai’s main transportation network.

Looking at archive photos from the 1930s and the 1960s, there are rows of tong lau with verandahs lining both sides of Hennessy Road. These were Chinese-style shophouses with shops on the ground floor and residences on the upper floors. Shop signs were everywhere, and the broad road was bustling with traffic. This shows that Hennessy Road was not only a main road, but also a lively commercial area.

Today, as you ride a tram slowly along Hennessy Road, it is easy to see that most of the old buildings have been replaced by new tall buildings. From shoreline to roadway, from old shophouses to new high-rises, this road tells the story of a century of change in this part of Wan Chai.

【Exploring Bus Routes】 Bus Route No. 102 Journey 🚌

〈Correction〉Since 1972, Bus Route No. 102 has been driving through busy streets like Nathan Road and King's Road every single day. It has watched the city transform. Old buildings have been replaced by new towers, neon signs have gradually faded away, giant display screens are becoming more common, and the old non-air-conditioned "hot dog" buses have all become air-conditioned.

【漫遊巴士路線】102號巴士遊 🚌

要數香港最早嘅過海巴士，來往美孚同筲箕灣嘅102號巴士一定榜上有名。1972年8月紅磡海底隧道通車，102號巴士線隨即開辦，係香港首三條過海巴士路線之一，為市民提供咗多一個方便嘅過海選擇。

一份1974年前工務司署交通運輸調查部嘅館藏檔案，記錄咗102號巴士嘅行車資料。呢條路線連結九龍西及港島東，沿長沙灣道、彌敦道、英皇道等主要道路，貫穿旺角、油麻地、銅鑼灣、北角、筲箕灣等商業及住宅區，車窗外盡是鬧市街頭景色——廣告牌林立，車水馬龍，人來人往，有如一幅流動嘅香港都市圖。

時至今日，102號巴士依然每日奔走於九龍與港島之間。由朝早6點到深夜12點，日行超過17個鐘，覆蓋港九多個旺區，無論返工、行街買野，朋友食飯，呢架巴士早已融入無數市民嘅日常生活當中。

【Exploring Bus Routes】Bus Route No. 102 Journey 🚌

Bus No. 102, running between Mei Foo and Shau Kei Wan, is one of the first three cross-harbour bus routes in Hong Kong. It first hit the road in August 1972, right after the Cross-Harbour Tunnel opened, giving people a convenient new way to travel across the sea.

A 1974 archive from the Traffic and Transport Survey Division of the then Public Works Department documented the operational details of Bus Route No. 102. The route connected the western part of Kowloon with the eastern side of Hong Kong Island, cruising along major roads like Cheung Sha Wan Road, Nathan Road, and King's Road. It linked up busy shopping and residential districts from Mong Kok and Yau Ma Tei all the way to Causeway Bay, North Point and Shau Kei Wan. Peering out from the bus windows offered a vivid picture of daily life in Hong Kong, with bright neon signs, busy traffic, and bustling crowds.

Even today, Bus No. 102 still shuttles between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island daily. With service running from 6 a.m. right through to midnight, it operates for over 17 hours a day, covering many vibrant districts across the harbour. Whether people are heading to work, going shopping, or dining out with friends, this bus remains a familiar part of daily life for many residents.
