【回到1960年代】鴨脷洲發電廠
當你行過鴨脷洲西部海旁，望住一排排住宅大廈，實在好難想像到呢度喺60至80年代曾經有一座發電廠，默默為港島同南丫島供電超過二十年。
1960年代初，香港島主要靠北角發電廠供電。為咗應付用電需求不斷飆升，鴨脷洲發電廠喺1965年3月正式動工。第一期機組喺1968年投入運作，之後再分階段加建更多機組。佢同北角發電廠一齊肩負起供電重任，成功支撐咗港島嘅電力需求。
到咗70年代末，電力需求愈來愈大。於是政府喺1978年批准喺南丫島興建一座更大型嘅發電廠。南丫發電廠喺1982年啟用，接力成為港島同南丫島嘅主要供電設施。北角發電廠同鴨脷洲發電廠分別喺1978同1989年退役，鴨脷洲發電廠拆卸後，原址就發展成今日見到嘅住宅群。
曾經照亮港島二十載嘅鴨脷洲發電廠，雖然已經消失喺城市景觀之中，但佢仍然係老一輩街坊嘅集體記憶。公眾依然可以透過我哋嘅館藏資料，重溫呢段承載住城市發展嘅供電歷史。

【Back then in the 1960s】Ap Lei Chau Power Station
As you stroll along the western waterfront of Ap Lei Chau, gazing at the rows of residential buildings, it is hard to imagine that a power station once stood here. From the 1960s to the 1980s, it quietly powered Hong Kong Island and Lamma Island for over twenty years.
In the early 1960s, Hong Kong Island and Lamma Island relied mainly on the North Point Power Station for electricity. To meet the city’s rapidly growing electricity demand, construction of the Ap Lei Chau Power Station began in March 1965. The first generating unit went into operation in 1968, with additional units added in phases over the following years. Together with the North Point Power Station, it shouldered the responsibility of meeting Hong Kong Island’s electricity needs.
By the late 1970s, electricity demand continued to surge. The government approved the development of a substantially larger power station on Lamma Island in 1978. The Lamma Power Station began operations in 1982, taking over as the main electricity generation facility for Hong Kong Island and Lamma Island. The North Point and Ap Lei Chau Power Stations gradually retired in 1978 and 1989 respectively. After the Ap Lei Chau Power Station was demolished, the site was redeveloped into the residential buildings we see today.
The Ap Lei Chau Power Station lit up Hong Kong Island for over two decades. Although it has now vanished from the city landscape, it remains a shared memory for older residents. The public can still revisit this chapter of power supply history through our archives.
