🔍 An Untold Cold War Story: Taipei’s Secret Talks with Moscow

In the late 1960s, with the Sino-Soviet split reshaping global politics, Taipei found itself in a diplomatic deadlock. The response? Clandestine contacts across the Iron Curtain with Moscow. Under the radar, with aliases, coded telegrams, and secret rendezvous in Vienna and Rome.

Historian 𝐒𝐡𝐚 𝐐𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐪𝐢𝐧𝐠’s new book, 𝙄𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝘼𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙨, digs into this overlooked chapter, drawing from diaries, national archives, and declassified materials. Why did Taipei and Moscow fail to become allies? And what does this “impossible” connection reveal about Cold War East Asia—and its echoes today?

🔍 一段被遺忘的冷戰故事：台北與莫斯科的秘密接觸

上世紀六十年代末，中蘇決裂、中美轉向，奉行「反共抗俄」的台灣當局陷入外交困局。面對鐵幕另一側的莫斯科，台北竟展開了秘密接觸——化名、密電、維也納與羅馬的跨國會晤，串起一段塵封多年的外交暗線。

歷史學者沙青青在新作《不可能的盟友》中，翻閱兩蔣日記、美國國家檔案與國史館史料，重新梳理這場最終未能成局的台北—莫斯科接觸。為何兩者未能成為盟友？這段「不可能的」關係，又為我們理解冷戰東亞提供了甚麽線索？

📸 From the Gobi Desert to the ports of East Africa, Pulitzer Prize–winning photojournalist 𝐋𝐢𝐮 𝐇𝐞𝐮𝐧𝐠‑𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 spent three years traversing 267,000 kilometres to document the human stories behind China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

His latest book, 𝙊𝙡𝙙 𝙍𝙤𝙖𝙙 𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨, offers a powerful visual journey through intimate portraits of workers, engineers, families, and communities reshaped by this global project. Spanning 21 countries across five continents, the book reveals how the 21st century is being built – one road, rail line, and relationship at a time.

Moving away from Hong Kong to the Greater Bay Area, our students went behind the scenes at XPENG’s smart manufacturing base in Guangzhou to explore the future of AI-powered mobility.

Last night, we gathered for an inspiring conversation on gurdwaras and Sikh heritage. Roopinder Singh takes us inside 51 gurdwaras across the globe, revealing how these buildings embody dignity, openness, and community beyond their religious function. Moderated by Enid Tsui , the discussion explored how architecture gives physical form to ideas and anchors cultural identity.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘼𝙄 𝙊𝙙𝙮𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙮: 𝙎𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙃𝙪𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮

𝐃𝐫. 𝐘𝐚-𝐐𝐢𝐧 𝐙𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠, Chair Professor of AI Science at Tsinghua University and Founding Dean of the Institute for AI Industry Research, will join us for a timely conversation about where artificial intelligence is headed. The discussion will be moderated by 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐠, Patrick Huen Wing Ming Professor of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

As one of the most influential technology leaders on both sides of the Pacific, Dr. Zhang bridges world-class research, AI innovation, and business leadership across his roles at Microsoft, Baidu, and Tsinghua University. He will share his perspectives on frontier research, AI safety, and US- China competition.
