🏜️Representative from Khanbogd–Shar Tsav Geopark visits Hong Kong Geopark🇲🇳
On 13 July 2026, Ms Solongo Purevsuren, Secretary, and Ms Lkhagvasuren Buyanjargala, project assistant, of Khanbogd–Shar Tsav Geopark — Mongolia’s first national geopark — conducted an exchange visit to Hong Kong Geopark. The aim of their visit was to gain a deeper understanding of how Hong Kong Geopark turns geopark concepts into effective planning, management and day-to-day operations.🌿

During their visit, they explored key geopark attractions, including the East Dam of High Island Reservoir, Sharp Island, Kau Sai Village and the Country Parks Management Office🦋💡. The two sides held detailed discussions on co-management models, routine operational challenges, signage and interpretation panels, visitor facilities, science-popularisation programmes, community engagement projects and various sustainability initiatives. This exchange and sharing of experience provided Khanbogd–Shar Tsav Geopark with rich practical examples, laid a solid foundation for future cooperation, and provided valuable reference materials for the Mongolian geopark’s future application for UNESCO Global Geopark status. On 2 March 2026, Hong Kong Geopark and Khanbogd–Shar Tsav Geopark successfully held an engaging online student exchange event.🌐✍🏻

Khanbogd–Shar Tsav Geopark was officially opened on 1 July 2026, in Khanbogd Soum, South Gobi province. The geopark features heritage of remarkable scientific and cultural value: petrified araucaria forests dating back 156 to 140 million years; more than 13,600 dinosaur footprints from at least five to six Late Cretaceous species (99 to 84 million years old)🐾; and diverse fossils of prehistoric mammals, fishes, turtles and lizards🦎. It is also home to the Khanbogd Massif—one of the world’s largest alkaline-granite bodies, formed some 290 million years ago and recognised as the type locality for the minerals mongolite and armstrongite. The geopark also plays a crucial role in safeguarding the fragile yet unique Gobi desert ecosystem, including rare plants and animals, and an array of culturally significant sites.

📌🌍2026 Geopark Schools Programme Student Exchange Tour: Students and teachers from Hong Kong and Wudalianchi Geopark jointly explore local nature and culture🌄

Before the 🌞summer break, a group of 22 teachers and students from Hong Kong Tseung Kwan O Government Secondary School, led by Hong Kong Geopark, embarked on a rewarding and unforgettable seven-day exchange tour to Wudalianchi UNESCO Global Geopark (Wudalianchi Geopark) in Heilongjiang province, China.

🌋Wudalianchi Geopark features China’s youngest volcanic group, whose most recent eruption occurred just over 300 years ago, leaving exceptionally well-preserved volcanic relics and diverse landforms. Designated both a UNESCO Global Geopark and a UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Reserve, the area combines remarkable biological diversity and the rich cultural heritage of northeastern nomadic tribes.

Since becoming 👯‍♀️a sister geopark to Hong Kong Geopark in 2012, Wudalianchi Geopark’s long-standing collaboration has created a valuable platform for this meaningful student exchange. During the visit, representatives of the two geoparks held a working meeting, presenting their key initiatives and achievements in recent years, engaging in in-depth discussions on several topics and laying the groundwork for further cooperation.

👩🏻‍🏫Hong Kong Geopark’s “Geopark School Programme” offers participating schools more than just talks, workshops and field trips; each year, it also organises study tours to other UNESCO Global Geoparks. These tours immerse teachers and students in local geology, ecology and culture, while fostering deep exchanges with locals and practitioners of traditional intangible heritage. Through community engagement and volunteer service, participants put their learning into practice, achieving the programme’s goal of uniting knowledge with action.

The recent study tour to Wudalianchi and Harbin exemplifies this philosophy. The group first visited Harbin, where they toured the Harbin Institute of Technology’s Aerospace Museum and the Exhibition Hall of Evidence of Japanese War Crimes Unit 731. At the museum, they witnessed China’s cutting-edge achievements in space technology; while at the Unit 731 site, they confronted a painful chapter in history. Experiencing these contrasts deepened the students’ understanding of the nation’s scientific progress and historical journey, strengthening their sense of responsibility and patriotism.

Next, the Hong Kong group visited Wudalianchi Scenic Area Advanced High School, marking the start of in-depth exchanges between the two schools. Teachers and students bonded through lively cultural performances and friendly sports activities, forging lasting friendships. They also joined the host school’s labour–education sessions—cleaning the campus, pulling weeds and planting trees—experiencing the value of hands-on work and putting environmental stewardship into practice.

🌋Following these initial exchanges, students from both regions embarked on a joint field study.🔎 Together they explored Laoheishan—one of Wudalianchi’s signature volcanoes—hiking up to the crater, walking over still-fresh lava flows, and examining rocks formed from cooled lava. The excursion also included a boat trip across the geopark’s distinctive volcanic barrier lakes, field trips to observe 300,000-year-old blocky lava fields, studies of the area’s unique flora and fauna, and visits to several famous mineral-spring sites. Throughout the journey, the mixed teams observed, discussed and applied their geological knowledge in an immersive setting, deepening both their understanding of earth science and their bonds with one another.

⭐️Another highlight of the tour was learning about the cultural heritage of northeastern nomadic tribes. Guided by an official bearer of intangible cultural heritage, the Hong Kong students learned the art of birch-bark collage. Using cutting, arranging and pasting techniques, they created intricate designs featuring the bark’s natural grain, gaining first-hand appreciation of the northeastern nomads’ traditional craft and the depth of Chinese artisanal culture.

The journey concluded at the Wudalianchi Geopark Museum🏛️, where well-curated scientific exhibits and comprehensive geological displays allowed the students to review and integrate their field observations of spectacular volcanic landforms and natural wonders with textbook concepts, achieving a true fusion of theory and practice. The visit enriched the students’ geological knowledge and sparked fresh insights, providing a fitting finale to this rewarding and memorable cross-regional study trip.

Through visits between Geopark Schools, the sister partnership agreement has been put into practice. The joint field trips, cultural exchanges, and work and education activities between students from the north and the south broadened their horizons, enriched their extracurricular experience, and nurtured a stronger sense of social responsibility and humanistic literacy. All participating teachers and students agreed that the programme was immensely rewarding and expressed eagerness to take part again in the future.🌈

Hong Kong and Guangdong Collaborate at “Learning & Teaching Expo 2026” 🌋Empowering Next-Generation Education Through Nature and Science Popularisation 🙋🏻‍♀️

The Learning & Teaching Expo is one of the Asia’s largest annual education exhibitions. Each year it brings together educators, experts, scholars and government representatives from around the globe, providing the sector with a high-quality platform for exchange and collaboration. The year’s expo was held from 25 to 27 June at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Hong Kong Geopark organised a joint exhibition with the Heyuan Museum of Guangdong province (the Heyuan Dinosaur Research Institute) and the Guangdong Nanxiong Provincial Dinosaur Fossil Protected Area🦕🌲. The three parties showcased their valuable geological and education resources, bringing nature education and earth science knowledge to a wider audience, and highlighting its unique value and importance in modern learning.

The Hong Kong Geopark booth displayed information about fossils from the three regions, distinctive geological field trip routes and science popularisation resources🔎. The unique dinosaur theme and engaging content drew large crowds, who stopped to learn more and ask questions. Throughout the expo, Geopark staff and geopark guides (R2Gs) took turns on site, explaining the concepts of nature-based science education and field trip routes. As AI advances rapidly, people are becoming increasingly immersed in virtual environments and dependent on AI tools for their studies and daily life📲. In response, Hong Kong Geopark—one of the city’s key bases for nature science education—has embraced its educational mission: guiding young people out of the virtual realm and into the natural world to explore, experience and appreciate its beauty. By doing so, the Geopark aims to help the society balance technology-driven lifestyles with authentic encounters in nature🌍, filling the experiential gap that the AI era can create🌱.

The expo introduced a Parent Summit for the first time, inviting experts from various fields to discuss the latest educational topics and share innovative ideas and practices. Ms Chan Yu-nam, Senior Geopark Officer, joined Ms Isabel Li, Executive Director, Education, at Ocean Park Corporation, and Mr Justin Fung, Head of Operations at Outward Bound Hong Kong, on stage to present “How Nature Nurtures the Next Generation”. Ms. Chan discussed the Geopark’s natural assets and educational philosophy, receiving an enthusiastic response from parents and educators in attendance. 👏🏼💡
