The “Multicultural Basketball Tournament 2026 - 3X3 Yuen Long Basketball Competition” co-organised by DAB Ethnic Minorities Committee, DAB Yuen Long Branch and M.E.L.T. Services Limited, was successfully held on 30 August 2026. The opening ceremony was honoured by the presence of officiating guests including Mr. LEUNG Che-cheung, SBS, MH, JP, Member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference; Mr Jeff YIU Ming, MH, member of the Legislative Council; Dr. Shah Mohammad Tanvir Monsur, Consul General of Bangladesh in Hong Kong & Macao SAR; and Mr. Muhammad Ahmad Ahmad, Vice Consul of Pakistan. The tournament was designed to strengthen interaction between ethnic minority youths and local youths, with the goal of fostering greater community cohesion.

Mr. Holden CHOW Ho-ding, JP, Vice Chairman of the DAB and Member of the Legislative Council, took time out of his busy schedule to visit the venue during the competition, cheering on the teams and encouraging all participants to enjoy the games to the fullest. Mr. Chow reaffirmed the DAB’s continued commitment to promoting local sports activities, with the aim of providing young people with platforms to showcase their talents, develop a positive mindset, and grow into a responsible, aspirational generation ready to contribute to the future of both Hong Kong and the nation.

In his address at the opening ceremony, Mr. Jeff YIU Ming, MH, Member of the Legislative Council, noted that the “Multicultural Basketball Tournament 2026” had previously been held in the New Territories East and Kowloon East, and expressed his delight to see the event now extended to the New Territories West. He highlighted that the DAB has long been dedicated to the “Sports for All” initiative, using sports such as football and pickleball as a common language to bridge differences, foster mutual understanding, and build friendships among people of diverse backgrounds.

Mr. Jason CHONG Chin-ming, Vice-Chairman of the DAB’s Ethnic Minorities Committee and Convenor of the event, said at the prize-presentation ceremony that the competition was intended to build an intercultural bridge through the game of basketball. He added that the event also sought to encourage young people to cultivate positive lifestyle habits, while honing their discipline and leadership skills through teamwork, thereby contributing to greater social harmony in the community.

The tournament attracted 32 teams and over 180 participants, including young people from local, Pakistani, Nepalese, Bangladeshi, Indian, and African backgrounds.
