Or China Opportunity?】
A “China Shock 2.0”? If that’s still not enough, make it “China Shock 3.0.” The claim from some in the West is that China’s subsidies are pumping out so much “excess capacity” that it’s about to steamroll foreign manufacturing.
But one cannot sell products through coercion. Good quality at fair prices wins over customers. As Chinese goods flow overseas, they make every dollar go further and help keep inflation in check.
Today, China is evolving from “the world’s factory” into “the factory of factories.” The “old three”—apparel, furniture, and home appliances—gave way to the “new three”—NEVs, lithium batteries, and solar cells. And now it is the “next new three” of AI, robotics, and innovative drugs. The value of China’s exports keeps climbing. For instance, intermediate goods now account for nearly half of China’s shipments to Europe. Chinese equipment and parts are now essential to global supply chains, helping other countries upgrade their industries and stay competitive in the global value chain.
More importantly, China offers the world not just products, but opportunities for developmental transition. With China’s integrated solutions, other developing countries can pursue digital upgrades or low‑carbon energy transition without taking unnecessary detours. Take green industries: Chinese clean-energy products sell globally because technological breakthroughs across the entire supply chain have made them affordable and accessible to all. Over the past decade, Chinese solar panel prices have dropped by over 90%, supercharging global renewable energy adoption, including Europe’s energy transition.
Some claim that China’s products sell well simply because of subsidies. That is missing the forest for the trees. China’s competitive edge comes from a systemic advantage—it’s built by Chinese companies through hard work, not government handouts. Moreover, subsidies are a widely used policy instrument across economies. China’s industrial subsidy policies strictly comply with WTO rules. The narrative of “unfair competition” is utterly unfounded.
The truth is: there is no “China Shock,” only China Opportunity. Why not seize the opportunity, and grow stronger—together with China.
