Today marks the Victory over Japan Day. 🕯️After the war, various memorials were erected throughout Hong Kong—some to commemorate the dead, some to remind us the cruelty of war and the preciousness of peace. 🕊️How much do you know about these post-war memorials scattered throughout our community?⁠

"Peace Pole" were first thought up by Masahisa Goi, the founder of the Byakko Shinko Kai, who advocates for world peace beyond religious boundaries. Each "Peace Pole" displays the message "May Peace Prevail on Earth" in the local language alongside various global translations. 🌍Today, over 200,000 Peace Poles stand across nearly 200 countries worldwide.⁠

今日是中國人民抗日戰爭勝利紀念日。🕯️三年零八個月的日佔歲月，在香港這座城市留下了沉重的歷史痕跡。戰後香港各處立起了不少紀念碑，有些為了哀悼死難者，有些則提醒後人戰爭的殘酷，銘記和平的可貴。🕊️你對這些散落社區的戰後紀念物又有多少認識？⁠

「和平柱」由日本五井昌久先生發起，倡導不分宗教的世界和平。柱上有「我們祝願世界人類的和平」及其他國家的語言翻譯。🌍這項運動在 80 年代起推廣至全球，至今已有近 200 個國家、超過 20 萬座和平柱佇立在世界各角落。⁠

☀️Many people enjoy swimming in the hot summer. Did you know that in the 1970s, faculty and staff at Hong Kong Baptist College had their own private seaside resort?🏊🏊🏻

🏖️"HKBC Swimming Shed" was located at No. 12 Approach Beach, 10.5 Miles, Castle Peak Road, New Territories. Built in 1952, the facility was transferred from Pui Ching Middle School to the College in 1976.

🪪Managed by the Athletics Course Programme, the facility was available free of charge to all faculty and staff members of the College and their immediate families. 🛟On-site lifeguards and 🚿freshwater showers ensured safety and convenience for swimmers, 🎉while nearby barbecue facilities offered an excellent gathering spot for colleagues. 🚌During its early days of operation, the College even provided special free transportation to the Swimming Shed.

🏖️「浸會泳屋」位於新界青山公路十咪半近水灣十二號，建於 1952 年，最初由培正中學擁有，直到 1976 年移交俾香港浸會學院使用，並由體育部管理。

🪪當年嘅教職員同佢哋嘅親友憑證就可以免費入場。🛟泳屋唔淨止有救生員睇住，🚿仲提供淡水沖身設施，安全又方便！🎉附近仲有燒烤場，簡直係同事聚會嘅絕佳地方！🚌喺泳屋營運初期，校方仲安排咗單程免費交通，接載同事前往泳屋。

🌏 The “Encounters in the Old World, East and West: From a Transdisciplinary Perspective” lecture series organized by the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology at Hong Kong Baptist University featured independent scholar Mr. Patrick M Dransfield, delivering a lecture titled “This Mysterious Manner of Unity: Unravelling the Origin of the 'Invention' of the Binary System in the West.”💬 In this lecture, Mr. Dransfield critically examined the scholarly discourse surrounding the historical origins of the binary system in the West and utilized the latest research to reveal its exact historical origins.

📀 Video Abstract:

Helmut Wilhelm set the original puzzle regarding what he described as "the most extra-ordinary episodes in the history of the human mind", which he erroneously believed to be the 'invention' of the binary system by two independent actors separated by five hundred years - Shao Yong (1027 - 1079) and Gottfried Leibniz (1646 - 1716). The fact that Wilhelm was wrong, but these errors have not been previously corrected has sent scholars from the East and from the West down various rabbit holes of investigation without arriving at the truth. It is only through the extraordinary scholarship of the Mexican-based historian Dr. Ricardo Perez Martinez (University of Mexico), writing in Spanish, that the true inspiration of the binary system in the West can now be revealed in the English language. The original inventor of the binary system in the West was Juan Caramuely Lobkowitz (1606 - 1682), and his inspiration came from the Mayan arithmetic system invented by the Aztec priests of the ninth century and transmitted to Europe by his contemporary Roman Catholic priests who accompanied the Spanish conquistadors.

🌏 由香港浸會大學饒宗頤國學院所舉辦的「跨學科視域下的早期歐亞文明交匯」講座系列，邀請獨立學者兼明道通訊創始人田明道先生主講「探本朔源：西方二進制系統「發明」起源考辨」。💬 講座中，田明道先生講述學界對西方二進制起源的歷史探索，並引用最新研究，帶出其歷史真相。

📀 影片簡介：

衞德明提出了一個他形容為「人類思想史上最非凡篇章」的原始難題，即認為二進制系統是由相隔五百年的邵雍（1027–1079）與萊布尼茨（1646–1716）各自「發明」而成。然衞氏謬誤由來已久，且長期未被糾正，致使東西方學者在此錯誤路徑上展開探究，始終未能觸及真相。得益於墨西哥大學歷史學者里卡多·佩雷斯·馬丁內斯博士以西班牙語撰寫的高論，才使西方二進制系統的真正靈感來源得以在英文世界揭示。西方二進制系統的真正發明者是胡安·卡拉慕夷·洛布科維茨（1606–1682），其靈感來自瑪雅算術系統。該系統由九世紀阿茲特克祭司創造，並由隨西班牙征服者而來的羅馬天主教神父入歐洲。

However, due to the lower cost of hiring foreign domestic workers compared to hiring local part-time domestic workers, the demand for foreign domestic workers from low-income families has increased significantly in recent years.⁠

📊According to the research summary of the digital scholarship project "Strangers/Helpers at Home: Hong Kong Families with Foreign Domestic Workers", 📈the proportion of low-income families in Hong Kong employing foreign domestic workers increased from less than 10% in 1991 to nearly 25% in 2016, indicating that they are increasingly becoming part of families from different socioeconomic backgrounds.⁠
