This past weekend BICA, Utila chapter, hosted an SCTLD monitoring training workshop in coordination with Mesoamerican Reef Fund -MAR Fund- and the Integrated Ridge to Reef Management of the Mesoamerican Reef Ecoregion (MAR2R) project. Participants were trained on monitoring protocol, coral ID, and SCTLD ID through theory presentations and in-water practice. Thank you to everyone who attended, including staff and volunteers from BICA, Utila and Guanaja Chapter, Fundación Islas de la Bahía (FIB), Whale Shark and Oceanic Research Center (WSORC)— we are very grateful for your interest and enthusiasm for conserving our corals! Monitoring is a vital part of our response to SCTLD, allowing us to track the disease and giving us valuable data on our reef. BICA, Utila chapter, has been conducting regular SCTLD monitoring since October, 2020. We will be continuing our efforts but are always in need of more volunteers! If you’re interested in learning more about how you can help, please stop by the BICA Visitors Center or contact us through our project page, .utila

⚠ Attention divers and snorkelers! ⚠ Did you know that the pathogens that cause Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease can get trapped in your gear and transferred to other areas? Ensure that ALL GEAR is properly disinfected after diving to prevent spreading the disease. ‼️ It is especially important to fully disinfect gear if you are leaving the island– do not take this deadly disease with you! And if you have been diving with your gear in another location where SCTLD is present, please rent gear locally from your dive center instead.

*Bleach solution will break down into non-harmful components and can be safely disposed of after letting it sit out for the day. And remember, do not mix with any other chemical solutions/cleaners (ie ammonia).

This World Oceans Day, we would like to send a big shout out to our amazing volunteers and donors! Without their dedication and generosity we would not be able to do what we do. Since October, 2020 we have been able to conduct monthly SCTLD monitoring of 10 sites, and since December, 2021, we have also been able to carry out monthly treatment interventions at 6 sites around Utila. A lot of planning, time, effort and funds go into these activities, and every hour and every dollar that has been donated to our project has made a huge difference to our small team and to Utila’s precious reefs. 🙏💙🌊

We plan to continue our monitoring and treatment efforts every month, but we are in need of funding to help us do so! If you are able to donate, every dollar makes a difference! Please use our direct donation page (https://bit.ly/donate-utila), facilitated by Roatan Marine Park, and you may choose one of the suggested amounts or write in any amount. All donations are used exclusively to enable our monitoring and treatment activities.

Big thank yous also go to Bay Islands Conservation Association MPAConnect Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute (GCFI) NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program Coral Reef Alliance Kanahau - Utila Research and Conservation Facility Utila Coral Foundation Roatan Marine Park Bay Islands National Marine Park for the support. And don’t forget to like, follow, and share our page .Utila, now also on Instagram!

🏥 Coral Doctors ASSEMBLE! 🩺

This past week our interns helped us in combatting with our second coral treatment application!

If you haven’t been following us for a while, is a stony coral disease that has been quickly wiping out corals across the island since it first arrived here in June of 2021.

Since February 2022, we have partnered with .hn to “adopt” a dive site to take care of the corals there and defend them from the disease!

This time around we were able to treat & retreat 21 corals, making for 47 corals treated total!!

Together, we can change our reefs for the better 🪸 Thank you to all our interns for their efforts!
