How did Mirine survive thanks to the defiance of Aleksandra Faber?

The Mirine we visit today, with its impressive walls and clearly visible ground plans, owes its survival to the determination of one woman. Archaeologist Aleksandra Faber recognized the importance of the bay of Sepen at a crucial moment, when this historical heritage was under great pressure. Her role in protecting Fulfinum and Mirine went far beyond professional duty — she became the first line of defense for this remarkable site.

It was precisely her unwavering persistence that ensured the locality remained a protected area of special significance, preventing the irreversible loss of information hidden within the layers of soil. Systematic excavations conducted under her leadership confirmed the monumental scale of the basilica and the richness of the suburban villas, laying the foundations for today’s archaeological park.

Aleksandra Faber did not merely study Mirine — she preserved it for the future, leaving us a place where history can still be read from the layers of the earth.

The fortresses of Krk were the eyes and ears of the Roman Empire!

When Justinian’s army launched the reconquest of the West in the 6th century, the northern Adriatic was not merely a maritime route, but a crucial military corridor. Our coast became a naval highway secured by dozens of fortified strongholds.

Mirine was not an isolated sacred complex, but a vital logistical support center for the network of fortifications that controlled the Kvarner Gulf. While the fortresses of Bosar above Baška, Ogrul near Vrbnik, and the castrum on the islet of St. Mark served as the “eyes and ears” of the Empire, the bay of Sepen functioned as their naval base and supply hub.

The uniqueness of this system can be seen in the very construction of these sites: each fortress had its own church, built in the same architectural style as the military walls, reinforced with buttresses and adapted to the number of soldiers stationed there. It was a rigorously planned system in which Mirine ensured the stability of the entire maritime area during the uncertain times of Late Antiquity.

Mirine: The suburb that outshone the city

As the classical Roman town of Fulfinum slowly faded in the background, the Bay of Sepen gained a new and vibrant center. What had long been a quiet periphery grew in the 5th century into a complex that became a new anchor of life in this part of the island: Mirine.

The new brilliance of the bay came with the construction of a monumental early Christian basilica. Measuring an impressive 35 meters in length and distinguished by its Latin-cross ground plan, it became a new landmark in the landscape. Mirine was not merely a quiet place of worship - it pulsed with real, tangible life.

Alongside the basilica walls, oil presses and storage facilities began to appear, and the life of the community organized itself around the harbor and production. It was a deliberate and clever turn toward new times: instead of the stone columns of a forum, priority shifted to resources, the sea, and a shared life beneath the vaults of the narthex.

Imagine the sounds of a bustling harbor and the scent of freshly pressed olives filling the bay, while the old forum, just a few hundred meters away, slowly slipped into silence.

Explore the transformation that shaped the face of the Bay of Sepen and revealed the new strength of its people.

Did you know that the inhabitants of Roman Krk had central heating and a private spa as early as the 4th century?

Roman baths weren’t just places to wash. They were a sequence of rooms with different temperatures, designed to be experienced in order—from cold to hot—each serving a specific role in the bathing ritual. To make this possible, the rooms had to be heated, and that’s where the hypocaust comes in. This system allowed hot air to circulate beneath the floors and through hollow walls, gradually raising the temperature in each successive room, without any visible source of fire.

But bathing also required large amounts of water. Fresh water had to flow in continuously, while used water needed to drain away just as quickly. Building baths along the seashore was the smartest engineering solution, as the sea effectively handled both supply and drainage at once, without the need for long channels to bring water from afar.

While the residents of nearby Fulfinum used public city baths, the owner of this villa enjoyed a private bathing ritual, accompanied by the sound of the sea, entirely for himself.

NOVA ERA STARIH ZIDINA

Umjesto velikog kompleksa, unutar ruševina stare vile nastaje manja crkva, građena od postojećih zidova i materijala, prilagođena novim okolnostima i manjoj zajednici.

NEW ERA OF OLD WALLS

The rise of Mirine is inseparably linked with the spread of Christianity and the construction of a monumental basilica that dominated the shoreline. This early Christian complex was not merely a place of worship, but the heart of a community that brought together spiritual life and everyday economic activity.

Archaeological finds from this period, from ornate stone decorations to the baptismal complex, speak of a high level of organization and the prosperity of the bay. It was during this time that Mirine emerged as an important local center, connected with the wider island and its surrounding region.

Yet, as the ancient world gradually transformed, so too did the use of this space.

In the early Middle Ages, the monumental basilica was no longer the focal point it had once been. Instead of a grand complex, a smaller church emerged within the ruins of the former villa, built from existing walls and reused materials, adapted to new circumstances and a smaller community.

The strength of early Christian architecture in the Bay of Sepen survived migrations and the fall of empires, leaving us with the most valuable monument of its time in the Kvarner region.

Little school of archaeology

Understanding Mirine requires reading traces that are not immediately obvious. Archaeology here is not only about uncovering beautiful objects, but about finding evidence of how different worlds functioned at the same time. The maritime villa and the basilica did not exclude one another - they coexisted within the same bay.

The key lies in recognizing the building phases. On site, it is possible to trace how the space changed and adapted: while one area retained its economic function, another took on a sacred role.

Finds such as pottery, production remains, and architectural modifications show that during the 5th century, everyday work and religious life took place side by side in the Bay of Sepen.

By linking these finds with analyses from other parts of the site, we gain a picture of a place that was not abruptly abandoned, but gradually transformed and adapted to the evolving needs of its community.

S dolaskom kasne antike, strogi rimski urbanizam foruma i hramova ustupa mjesto novim prioritetima.

Imagine the silence that settled over the former Municipium Flavium Fulfinum as its inhabitants, once holders of full Roman citizenship, slowly began to leave their homes.

To understand this silence, we must return to the 1st century. The town took its name from the powerful Flavian dynasty, the very same imperial family that gave the world the Colosseum. Carefully planned and built by the sea, Fulfinum stood as a symbol of Roman imperial authority on the island of Krk, with its orderly streets, a central forum, and monumental temples.

With the onset of Late Antiquity, the strict Roman urban order of forums and temples gradually gave way to new priorities. A process of ruralization began: the town turned toward the sea, toward production, and toward a new spiritual life. The settlement did not simply vanish. Instead, life shifted to the outskirts, giving rise to the impressive early Christian complex we now know as Mirine. Where the rigid structure of the classical city ended, a new and dynamic era began in the Bay of Sepen.

Explore the remains of a civilization that once thrived here under the patronage of the Flavian emperors.

Liquid gold that nourished people and illuminated everyday life.

Olive oil was the lifeblood of Mirine. It was not merely food; it was essential for lighting through oil lamps and for religious rituals in the basilica. At the same time, it was “liquid gold” whose value sustained the functioning and maintenance of the entire complex in difficult times.

In the uncertain period of Late Antiquity, during the 5th and 6th centuries, the proximity of the church complex provided important protection. Strong walls and the authority of the community safeguarded both the workers and the valuable stores of oil kept here.

The bays of Sepen and nearby Voz were key harbors in this part of the island. Oil production was strategically located right by the coast, where it could most easily be loaded onto ships for further trade or for supplying Byzantine fortifications such as the one on the islet of St. Mark.

Discover the traces of ancient production facilities and the routes along which oil once traveled toward Byzantine strongholds.

Did you know that one of the most unusual battles of the ancient world took place beneath today’s Krk Bridge?

While Julius Caesar and Pompey the Great fought for control of Rome, their fleets clashed here in 49 BC, vying for dominance over the “gateway to the island.” When trapped, Caesar’s soldiers carried out a remarkable feat of engineering: they constructed massive war rafts on empty barrels to break through the naval blockade in the channel.

This episode of ancient ingenuity confirmed what the Romans already knew – whoever controlled this narrow passage controlled the entire northern Adriatic. It was precisely this strategic importance that gave momentum to the development of the nearby town of Fulfinum, upon whose foundations the magnificent Mirine would later rise.

From Roman legions to a Byzantine fortification on the islet of St. Mark, this bay remained for centuries the key point for access to the island and control of maritime trade.

On i dalje stoji in situ, kao tihi čuvar povijesti uvale Sepen.

The Narthex Riddle: Who were the people buried beside the basilica?

The vestibule of the Mirine basilica was reserved for the most prominent members of the community. Two important tombs bear witness to their status, each with its own story.

The first is a massive limestone sarcophagus that has remained untouched for over 1,500 years. Although it has never been opened, modern imaging has revealed its interior: two individuals rest there in eternal peace. It still stands in situ, a silent guardian of the history of Sepen Bay.

The second story was uncovered by a masonry tomb in the very corner of the vestibule. A bioarchaeological analysis of the bones of three men found inside provided scientific evidence of Mirine’s elite class. Unlike most of the population at the time, these individuals were not accustomed to heavy physical labor and lived to an advanced age.

Whether they were high-ranking dignitaries or administrators of a wealthy olive oil estate, their privileged burial place at the heart of the complex clearly identifies them as the social elite of late antique Fulfinum.
