Kad ruševine progovore!
Fulfinum oživljava uz stručno vodstvo i suvremenu tehnologiju koja nadopunjuje ono što je vrijeme izbrisalo. U sklopu projekta ARCHEODIGIT, posjet Mirinama pretvara se u putovanje otkrivanja, od antičkih zidina do digitalnih rekonstrukcija.

Digitalni sadržaji razvijaju se na više jezika, na pristupačan i razumljiv način, bez složene stručne terminologije, kako bi arheološki park bio otvoren i zanimljiv svim generacijama.

U središtu projekta nalazi se lokalno središte suradnje u kojem stanovnici, udruge i stručnjaci zajednički oblikuju priče, legende i digitalne alate, poput virtualnih obilazaka dostupnih putem QR kodova postavljenih na samoj lokaciji.

Na taj način tehnologija postaje produžetak autentičnog duha mjesta i most koji povezuje dvije obale Jadrana.

Ovaj materijal izrađen je uz financijsku potporu Europske unije u okviru Programa Interreg Italija-Hrvatska.

When ruins begin to speak!
Fulfinum comes to life through expert guidance and modern technology that fills the gaps left by time. Through the ARCHEODIGIT project, a visit to Mirine becomes a process of discovery, from ancient walls to digital reconstructions.

Digital content is developed in multiple languages and in an accessible way, without complex terminology, so that the archaeological park remains open to all generations.

At the centre of the project is the local hub, a place of cooperation where residents, associations and experts together shape stories, legends and digital tools, such as virtual tours available through QR codes on site.

In this way, technology becomes an extension of the authentic spirit of the place and a bridge between the two shores of the Adriatic.

Antički grad koji je nestajao kamen po kamen

Nakon gašenja Fulfinuma njegove građevine nisu odjednom nestale. Tijekom stoljeća grad je postupno mijenjao oblik, a njegovi kameni elementi nastavljali su živjeti u novim građevinama okolnog prostora.

Veliki pravilno obrađeni blokovi iz antičkog grada bili su vrijedan i kvalitetan građevinski materijal. U vremenima kada se kamen obrađivao ručno i teško dopremao, bilo je sasvim uobičajeno da se postojeći elementi ponovno koriste u kasnijim kućama, suhozidima i obalnim konstrukcijama.

Takva praksa nije bila iznimka, nego prirodan dio života nekadašnjih gradova uz more. Nakon što bi prostor izgubio svoju izvornu funkciju, njegovi su se materijali postupno ugrađivali u nove slojeve krajolika.

Zato su Mirine danas istovremeno arheološki lokalitet i prostor u kojem se može pratiti kako je antički Fulfinum stoljećima polako mijenjao svoj oblik.

The ancient city that disappeared stone by stone

After Fulfinum ceased to exist, its buildings did not disappear all at once. Over the centuries, the city gradually changed its form, while its stone elements continued to live on in new structures throughout the surrounding area.

The large, carefully cut blocks from the ancient city were valuable, high-quality building materials. At a time when stone was shaped by hand and difficult to transport, it was common for existing elements to be reused in later houses, dry-stone walls and coastal structures.

This practice was not an exception, but a natural part of the life cycle of former coastal cities. Once a site had lost its original function, its materials were gradually incorporated into new layers of the landscape.

This is why Mirine is both an archaeological site and a place where we can trace how ancient Fulfinum slowly transformed over the centuries.

Zašto su antički gradovi gotovo uvijek nastajali uz prirodne luke?

U antičkom svijetu more je bilo najvažniji prometni put. Gradovi koji su imali sigurnu luku imali su pristup trgovini, ljudima, robi i vezama s ostatkom Mediterana.

Zato su mjesta poput uvale Sepen imala veliku vrijednost. Zaklonjena obala omogućavala je sigurnije pristajanje brodova, dok je položaj na sjevernom Jadranu povezivao Fulfinum s kvarnerskim i talijanskim obalama.

Luka nije bila dodatak gradu, nego njegov najvažniji dio. Oko nje su nastajali forum, gospodarski prostori, skladištenje robe i kasnije ranokršćanski kompleks Mirine.

Iznad uvale već je postojala liburnska gradina Fertinata, što pokazuje da je isti prostor bio strateški važan i prije dolaska Rimljana.

Položaj Fulfinuma pokazuje koliko su antički gradovi bili povezani s morem i koliko je upravo obala određivala njihov razvoj.

Why were ancient cities almost always founded near natural harbours?

In the ancient world, the sea was the most important transport route. Cities with a safe harbour had access to trade, people, goods and connections with the rest of the Mediterranean.

This is why locations such as Sepen Bay were so valuable. Its sheltered coastline allowed ships to dock more safely, while its position in the northern Adriatic connected Fulfinum with the coasts of Kvarner and Italy.

The harbour was not merely an addition to the city, but its most important part. The forum, commercial areas, warehouses and, later, the early Christian complex of Mirine all developed around it.

The Liburnian hillfort of Fertinata had already existed above the bay, showing that the same area was strategically important even before the arrival of the Romans.

Fulfinum’s location reveals just how closely ancient cities were connected to the sea and how strongly the coastline shaped their development.

Kamen koji pamti: Kako zidine čuvaju tragove gradnje stare 1500 godina

Na Mirinama zidovi nisu važni samo zbog svoje starosti. U njima su i danas vidljivi tragovi načina na koji je bazilika građena, dograđivana i prilagođavana kroz stoljeća.

Na bočnim zidovima još se mogu prepoznati utori i građevinski zahvati koji pokazuju da je prvotna jednobrodna crkva naknadno preuređena u trobrodnu baziliku. U kamenu su ostali sačuvani tragovi arkada, nosača i konstrukcija koje su mijenjale unutrašnji prostor crkve.

I kontrafori uz vanjske zidove govore istu priču. Nisu građeni samo kao arhitektonski detalj, nego kao pojačanja koja su trebala nositi težinu velikih zidnih ploha i produžiti trajnost građevine uz samu obalu.

Zato Mirine danas nisu samo ruševina. Zidovi bazilike i dalje čuvaju zapis o gradnji, preinakama i znanju kasnoantičkih graditelja koji je ostao vidljiv nakon petnaest stoljeća.

Stone that remembers: How the walls preserve traces of 1,500-year-old construction

At Mirine, the walls are significant not only because of their age. They still reveal traces of how the basilica was built, expanded and adapted over the centuries.

Grooves and construction interventions can still be identified on the side walls, showing that the original single-nave church was later transformed into a three-nave basilica. The stone preserves traces of the arcades, supports and structures that altered the church’s interior.

The buttresses along the exterior walls tell the same story. They were not built merely as architectural features, but as reinforcements designed to support the weight of the large wall surfaces and extend the durability of the building beside the coast.

This is why Mirine is more than a ruin today. The basilica’s walls continue to preserve a record of its construction, modifications and the knowledge of Late Antique builders, still visible after fifteen centuries.

Dodirni prošlost. Doživi Fulfinum-Mirine!

Tamo gdje se more susreće s drevnim kamenom, leži ranokršćanski kompleks Fulfinum-Mirine. Danas njegovi ostaci čuvaju priču duboko povezanu s lokalnim identitetom, no ponekad nam je teško zamisliti kako je ovaj lokalitet nekada izgledao i živio.

Projekt ARCHEODIGIT to mijenja. Fulfinum-Mirine sada možete upoznati kroz interaktivno iskustvo u kojem posjetitelji ne samo da promatraju, već i sudjeluju. Tragovi rimskog života, keramičke zdjelice, ulomci svakodnevnih predmeta oživljeni su kroz digitalne rekonstrukcije.

Igre, vizualno pripovijedanje i virtualna stvarnost pozivaju sve generacije da istražuju. Uz VR naočale, ruševine ponovno dobivaju krov, zidove i život kakav su nekoć imale.

Touch the past. Experience Fulfinum-Mirine!

Where the sea meets ancient stone, lies the early Christian complex of Fulfinum-Mirine. Today its remains preserve a story deeply connected to local identity, though at times it's hard for us to imagine how this site once looked and lived.

The ARCHEODIGIT project changes that. Fulfinum-Mirine gains an interactive experience where visitors don't just observe, but take part. Traces of Roman life - ceramic bowls, fragments of everyday objects come to life through digital reconstructions.

Games, visual storytelling, and virtual reality invite younger generations to explore. Through VR headsets, the ruins regain their roofs, walls, and the life they once held.

Mirine će 29. srpnja u 21:00 sat postati pozornica pod vedrim nebom za jedan od najdinamičnijih instrumenata u rukama vrhunskog majstora. Ivan Šverko, svjetski priznati virtuoz klasične harmonike, donosi u Mirine program koji otkriva svu širinu, snagu i izražajnost ovog instrumenta.

Tišina koja vara: Koliko je zapravo bučan bio antički Fulfinum?

Danas Mirine djeluju gotovo nestvarno tiho. Čuju se samo more, vjetar i koraci među kamenim zidinama. No antički Fulfinum izgledao je potpuno drukčije.

U luci su pristajali brodovi, uz obalu se premještala roba, a forumom su prolazili stanovnici grada, putnici i trgovci. Iz gospodarskog sklopa u predgrađu dopirao je ritam rada preša za masline, obrade metala i svakodnevnih poslova koji su održavali život grada.

Ni bazilika nije bila prostor tišine kakvu danas poznajemo. U njoj su odzvanjali glasovi liturgije, molitve i pjevanja, dok je veliki atrij između crkve i mora primao ljude koji su pristizali plovnim putem kroz sjeverni Jadran.

Zato je današnja tišina Mirina pomalo varljiva. Ispod nje skriva se prostor koji je stoljećima bio ispunjen zvukovima rada, mora i života antičkog grada.

The silence that deceives: How noisy was ancient Fulfinum really?

Today, Mirine feels almost unreal in its silence. All that can be heard are the sea, the wind, and footsteps among the stone ruins. Yet ancient Fulfinum was a very different place.

Ships arrived at the harbor, goods were unloaded along the waterfront, and the forum bustled with townspeople, travelers, and merchants. From the economic complex in the suburb came the rhythm of olive presses, metalworking, and the countless daily activities that sustained life in the town.

Even the basilica was far from the quiet place we experience today. Its walls echoed with the sounds of liturgy, prayer, and singing, while the large atrium between the church and the sea welcomed people arriving via the maritime routes of the northern Adriatic.

The silence of Mirine today can therefore be deceptive. Beneath it lies the memory of a place that, for centuries, was filled with the sounds of work, the sea, and the vibrant life of an ancient town.

Što bi putnik iz Ravenne prvo ugledao pri dolasku u Sepen?

Ravenna je u kasnoj antici bila jedno od najvažnijih političkih i pomorskih središta sjevernog Jadrana. Upravo su iz nje prema istočnoj obali plovili brodovi, vojnici, trgovci i putnici koji su prolazili kvarnerskim pomorskim putevima.

U antičko vrijeme gradovi uz more nisu se doživljavali iz unutrašnjosti, nego upravo s palube broda. Prvi kontakt s Fulfinumom bio je pogled na obalu, pristanište i građevine koje su označavale dolazak u sigurnu luku na važnom jadranskom plovnom pravcu.

Pogled prema gradu otvarao se izravno s mora. Uz obalu su se nizali pristanište, gradski prostori i monumentalna bazilika koja je svojim položajem zatvarala zapadni dio uvale.

I danas je moguće prepoznati gotovo isti odnos mora, obale i kamenih zidova koji je oblikovao prvi prizor Fulfinuma pri ulasku u Sepen.

What would a traveler from Ravenna have eeen first upon arriving in Sepen?

In Late Antiquity, Ravenna was one of the most important political and maritime centers of the northern Adriatic. From its harbors sailed ships carrying soldiers, merchants, and travelers who navigated the maritime routes of the Kvarner region and the eastern Adriatic coast.

In the ancient world, coastal towns were not experienced from inland approaches, but from the deck of a ship. The first impression of Fulfinum was therefore a view of the shoreline, the harbor, and the buildings that signaled arrival at a safe port along one of the Adriatic’s key maritime routes.

The town revealed itself directly from the sea. Along the waterfront stood the landing areas, urban spaces, and the monumental basilica, whose prominent position marked the western edge of the bay.

Even today, it is possible to recognize much the same relationship between the sea, the shoreline, and the stone walls that shaped the first view of Fulfinum for those entering Sepen nearly two thousand years ago.

Mirine kao pozornica vjetra: Kako bura stoljećima oblikuje ruševine?

Na kamenim zidovima Mirina i danas su vidljivi tragovi mora, vlage i vjetra koji ih stoljećima polako mijenjaju.

Kiša se zadržava u pukotinama zidova, sol iz morske pare ulazi duboko u kamen, a kvarnerski vjetrovi godinama troše njegove rubove. Ono što danas djeluje čvrsto i monumentalno zapravo je površina koju priroda polako preoblikuje već gotovo petnaest stoljeća.

Zato ruševine u uvali Sepen nikada ne izgledaju isto. Svjetlo se mijenja preko hrapavog kamena, zidovi drugačije reagiraju na vlagu i sunce, a čitav prostor nosi trag dugog života uz more.

Mirine nisu sačuvane unatoč prirodi. Njihov današnji izgled nastao je upravo pod njezinim stalnim utjecajem.

Mirine as a stage for the wind: How the bura has shaped the ruins for centuries

The stone walls of Mirine still bear the marks of the sea, moisture, and wind that have been slowly transforming them for centuries.

Rainwater settles into cracks in the walls, salt carried by sea spray penetrates deep into the stone, and the powerful winds of the Kvarner region gradually wear away its edges. What appears solid and monumental today is, in fact, a surface that nature has been continuously reshaping for nearly fifteen centuries.

That is why the ruins in Sepen Bay never look quite the same. Light shifts across the rough stone, the walls respond differently to moisture and sunlight, and the entire site reflects the long history of life beside the sea.

Mirine have not been preserved despite nature. Their present appearance has been shaped precisely through its constant influence.
