🎒 Research by Croatian scientists, supported by the European Research Council (ERC) 🇪🇺, is contributing to a better understanding of community resilience to natural disasters.
🏫 Led by Dr Karin Doolan of the Institute for Social Research in Zagreb, the RESADL project is funded through an ERC Consolidator Grant. It will explore the role of schools following floods and earthquakes across six European countries.

🎒 New school year, new school research!
🏫 When disaster strikes, schools do far more than reopen their doors.
They become places of safety, stability and recovery for entire communities. But what role should schools play after floods or earthquakes? And how can they help communities become more resilient before the next disaster?
An ERC-supported research project led by Karin Doolan at the Institut za društvena istraživanja u Zagrebu will explore these questions across six European countries affected by recent natural disasters:
🇪🇸 Spain
🇩🇪 Germany
🇸🇮 Slovenia
🇬🇷 Greece
🇹🇷 Türkiye
🇭🇷 Croatia.
By comparing schools affected by floods and earthquakes, researchers will examine how schools respond in times of crisis, which roles they embrace or resist, and how education systems can better prepare for future disasters.
The project will develop a new framework for understanding schools in post-disaster settings, alongside practical guidance and policy recommendations to strengthen community resilience.
Because rebuilding after a disaster is about more than restoring buildings—it's also about restoring communities.
