From Argentina to Chile, Australia and South Africa, recent devastation shows that while wildfires are not caused by a single factor, a changing climate makes them more frequent, more intense, and more destructive.
Rising global temperatures are driving longer heatwaves, prolonged droughts, and drier vegetation, creating the perfect conditions for fires to ignite and spread rapidly. Stronger winds and shifting rainfall patterns then help fires grow larger and burn longer.
Unless global emissions are cut and ecosystems are better protected, wildfires will continue to grow in intensity, threatening lives, livelihoods, and biodiversity, while simultaneously contributing to more emissions.
