The Philippine Embassy in Budapest, led by Ambassador Maria Elena P. Algabre, together with the Association of Filipino Students in Hungary (AFSHu), participated in the Cultural Connection Day 2026 at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE).

This year’s edition gathered more than 25 embassies and diplomatic missions, international student associations from across Hungary, and performers to celebrate cultural diversity and promote intercultural exchange.

In celebration of Filipino Food Month, observed every April, the Embassy featured a selection of traditional Filipino delicacies that delighted guests and showcased the rich flavors of Philippine cuisine.

Among the featured dishes were Biko, a classic Filipino dessert made from glutinous rice cooked in coconut milk and sweetened with brown sugar, topped with rich caramelized coconut; Sapin-sapin, a colorful layered delicacy made from glutinous rice flour, coconut milk, and sugar, flavored with ube and coconut and topped with toasted coconut curds; Maja Blanca, a creamy dessert made from coconut milk, cornstarch, sugar, and corn kernels, and Homemade Ube Macapuno ice cream, a well-loved Filipino treat combining purple yam (ube), sweetened macapuno (a soft, jelly-like coconut), heavy cream, and condensed milk, known for its rich and creamy flavor.

Additional treats, including dried mangoes and assorted Philippine-made candies, were also offered to the visitors. The Philippine booth attracted a significant amount of interest, with many attendees expressing enthusiasm and appreciation for the opportunity to taste Filipino delicacies.

A highlight of the Philippine booth was the homemade Ube Macapuno ice cream, which proved to be a crowd favorite among the attendees. The traditional Filipino ice cream cart likewise attracted considerable attention and added a festive and authentic touch to the presentation of Filipino culture. Visitors also enjoyed trying a traditional Filipino yo-yo game, with participants receiving free ice cream as a reward.

A notable part of the program at ELTE was a musical performance by Mr. Aldeth Garas, who sang “MAPA” by SB19 and “Liwanag sa Dilim” by Rivermaya. His performance was warmly received by the audience and added an inspiring dimension to the cultural program.

In addition to its participation in the Cultural Connection Day 2026 at Eötvös Loránd University, the Embassy also supported Filipino students in their participation in the Corvinus Cultural Day 2026 held at Corvinus University of Budapest, which took place on the same day.
In coordination with the AFSHu, and in observance of Filipino Food Month, the Philippine booth showcased a variety of traditional Filipino delicacies, including Sapin-sapin, Maja Blanca, and Biko, offering visitors a taste of authentic Filipino cuisine and culinary traditions. Traditional Philippine products and textiles, including woven handicrafts, abaca items, and fabrics featuring indigenous Filipino designs, were likewise displayed to highlight the country’s rich artistic and cultural heritage

Cultural materials and tourism brochures introducing visitors to Philippine destinations, heritage, and traditions were also presented. Through these activities, the Philippine booth provided Hungarian and international students with an opportunity to learn more about Filipino culture, hospitality, and the country’s diverse cultural traditions, while promoting intercultural exchange within the university community.

Organized by the International Department of the Students’ Union of Corvinus University, the university’s annual Cultural Day brought together Hungarian and international students from various countries through cultural booths and traditional food presentations, celebrating cultural diversity and promoting intercultural exchange within the university community.

Filipino students from the University of Pécs also proudly represented the Philippines at their International Evening. The “Grand Masquerade”-themed event was an evening showcasing distinct cultures through food, performances, and camaraderie.

The Filipino representatives shared samples of Filipino dishes such as Mango Graham Cake and delivered an entertaining on-stage performance that was well received by the audience. They also had the opportunity to showcase Barong and Filipiniana through a fashion runway. The event gave a chance to experience and appreciate Filipino culture.

Through the Embassy’s participation in Cultural Connection Day 2026 at ELTE, as well as its collaboration with Filipino students from Corvinus University and the University of Pécs, the Philippine Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to promoting Philippine culture and advancing cultural diplomacy in Hungary, particularly in celebration of Filipino Food Month. These engagements provided meaningful opportunities to showcase Filipino heritage, traditions, creativity, and cuisine to a wider international audience, allowing participants to gain a deeper appreciation of Filipino culture and identity. These activities are only three of the many initiatives and cultural events in which members of the Filipino student community in Hungary actively participate throughout the year.

By supporting initiatives that encourage intercultural dialogue and cultural exchange, the Embassy continues to strengthen its ties with the Filipino student community in Hungary while fostering stronger people-to-people connections between the Philippines and Hungary. The events also highlighted the role of Filipino food and cultural presentations in bringing communities together and further deepening the friendship and cooperation between the two countries. END.

An open forum and panel discussion followed, allowing participants to engage directly with the speakers and raise questions on health and well-being concerns.

In his closing remarks, Minister and Consul General Mr. Jeffrey P. Salik expressed appreciation to the speakers and participants for their active engagement and reiterated the Embassy’s continued commitment to supporting the welfare of the Filipino community in Hungary.

A free basic health screening was also conducted on-site at the Embassy before and after the seminar by Mr. Miguel Angelo Victor Ontog, with the assistance of Ms. Andrea Bergula Saises, a BSc Nursing and Patient Care student at Semmelweis University. The initiative was well received by participants, as it provided them with an opportunity to undergo basic health checks and receive preliminary health information.

Guests were also served hearty Filipino refreshments, including the traditional purple-colored delicacy Ube bilo-bilo, in celebration of “Purple Wednesdays” observed during Women’s Month. The sharing of the Filipino treat added a cultural touch to the event while symbolizing solidarity and support for women’s empowerment, with purple recognized as the official color of Women’s Month celebrations.

In addition, the Embassy’s Labor Office distributed hygiene kits to all women participants in observance of Women’s Month, and as part of its continued efforts to promote women’s health and well-being.

By strengthening partnerships with medical institutions and service providers, the Embassy continues to promote health awareness and preventive health practices, as well as support inclusive support mechanisms that enhance the resilience, safety, and overall well-being of Filipinos living and working abroad.
