We promote economic, social and territorial cohesion in the Danube Region: www.interreg-danube.eu

Danube Transnational Programme is one of the programmnes of the European Territorial Cooperation objective funded by the European Union. It comprises 14 countries (Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany – Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria-, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia and Ukraine – partly). EU Cooperation programmes are primarily designed for further territorial integration through enhanced cooperation in specific policy fields. Geographically, the Danube Transnational Programme area overlaps with the territory addressed by the EU Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR) and comprising also the Danube river basin.The variety of natural environment, the socio-economic differences and cultural diversity of the various parts of the area may be perceived as major challenges but actually represent important opportunities and unexploited potential. The Danube Transnational Programme focuses on four thematic priorities:

1. Innovative and socially responsible Danube Region (foster eco-innovation, knowledge transfer, cluster policy, social innovation and skilled entrepreneurship including technological and non-technological innovation aspects)
2. Environment and Culture responsible Danube Region (preserve and manage the diversity of natural and cultural assets, maintain major ecological corridors along river systems, environmental risk prevention and management)
3. Better connected Danube Region (improve regional connectivity to the TEN-T network, environmentally-friendly transport systems, regional energy planning and –coordination)
4. Well governed Danube Region (strengthen multilevel- and transnational governance in areas with major societal challenges, more effective governance of the EUSDR and complex transnational project development)

Target groups are regional and local authorities, development agencies, universities and research institutes, chambers of commerce, innovation centers and other relevant actors in the field of innovation, economic development, environment, transport, energy and institutional capacity as well as stakeholders and governance of the EUSDR.

The implementation of the programme is coordinated by joint structures (Managing Authority, hereinafter MA and Joint Secretariat, hereinafter JS) set up in Budapest, Hungary. The Joint Secretariat (JS) is in charge of the technical implementation of the Programme, including the communication activities. It supports the Managing Authority in programme coordination and implementation.

Can AI really work in healthcare? 🤔 Yes, but the algorithm is only a small part of the story!

At AI Summit Budapest https://www.aisummit.hu/en, our DIGI4Care https://interreg-danube.eu/projects/digi4care partners from Bulgaria 🇧🇬, Austria 🇦🇹, Czechia 🇨🇿 and Hungary 🇭🇺 shared what they learned when AI leaves the testing room and comes to real hospitals. 🏥

The same eye screening technology was tested in 4 countries. Same device, but very different reality! Who does the screening? Who follows the patient? Who pays? 💶 Even the hospital Wi-Fi was a lesson. 📶😅

But the most important lesson is human. 💙 An algorithm can find a problem, but it cannot sit with a worried patient and give them trust. Patients still trust their doctors, and this is why healthcare stays human.

And it works! 👏 In Bulgaria, more than 300 people were screened and over 50 pathologies found. Now this experience supports a bigger screening for almost 5,000 people.

This is why cooperation across borders is so important. 🌍 With the Interreg Danube Region Programme, partners from different health systems can test, compare and learn together. 🤝

Why do two neighboring villages end up in totally different places with their energy communities? 🤔

The NRGCOM project https://interreg-danube.eu/projects/nrgcom assessed 8 real energy communities across Austria, Czechia, Slovakia and Slovenia over the past two years and found the answer usually isn't what you'd expect.

Two rural communities in Czechia, both full of local enthusiasm, scored 25/60 vs 48/60 on NRGCOM's readiness scale. The gap wasn't people or location - it was smart meters and basic energy management software. Without them, good intentions can't become a working system.

The project saw it again in Slovakia: a community with near-perfect scores held back not by tech, but by the wrong legal structure for national energy law.

The pattern across all 8 pilots: technology is rarely the problem. Legal rules and financial uncertainty - especially unpredictable grid fees - are what actually slow communities down.

❤️ Two Series, One Truth: Interreg Runs on People

Ana Savanović never planned to work in civil society — she imagined herself as a teacher. Instead, she ended up in Baranja, Croatia, building what she now calls a safe haven: a place where young people at risk of exclusion can learn to write a CV, or just sit with someone who won't judge them.

Her story just ran in PlaceCRAFT's Local Voices series, which introduces the people shaping the project's pilot regions.

A few months earlier, we started 🌊 People of the Danube, where we talk with coordinators and Lead Partners like Simona Roudi in Beltinci, Mirza Sikirić in Zenica, or Teodora Đurnić in Montenegro about what it's really like to lead or be part of a transnational project across so many countries.

Two very different formats. But read together, the same idea keeps coming back:

❤️ Trust is the real infrastructure. Ana built PGDI on trust. Teodora, in Montenegro, sees the same thing at a bigger scale that young people aren't missing ambition, just access and belief that their voice matters. Mirza, leading 16 partners from Bosnia and Herzegovina, says the same about institutions: once roles are clear, trust follows.

❤️ Ownership is what makes it stay. Ana doesn't tell young people what to do and she helps them build their own initiatives, like Lounge&ART, designed entirely by the community. Simona describes the same behind RurALL: real impact comes when people shape the solution themselves.

❤️ One story doesn't work without the other. Strategy without a face stays abstract. A good local story without structure is just a lucky accident.

Transnational cooperation isn't a line in a call for proposals. It's Ana in Baranja, it's Simona in Beltinci - all of them together, proving the Danube region is more connected than its borders suggest. 🌍

Monica has been close to the human side of Danube4SEecosystem from the start 🤝 and it shows. Beyond the strategies and policy documents, what she keeps coming back to is how perceptions shifted: social enterprises learning they could turn to municipalities for support, and local authorities discovering that social enterprises are real partners in developing their communities, not just service providers for vulnerable groups 🌍.

Her honest takeaway: what will last isn't the reports, but the connections - the team, the stories, the communities who opened up to them. As she puts it herself, in the end, it's people who create the change 💬.

🏭 What if the future of industry was already there, waiting for someone to see it?

That's what the ReInd-BBG https://interreg-danube.eu/projects/reind-bbg team set out to prove almost three years ago. And after all this time, all the site visits, partner meetings, and long conversations with local communities across the Danube region, we can say it: they were right. ✨
Instead of paving over new land, ReInd-BBG bet on the abandoned and forgotten – old factories, empty compressor stations, degraded industrial sites and asked: what if these became the new engines of growth instead?
The answer is now visible on the ground. In Hrastnik, Slovenia, for example, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oy6oljDKETo, a former compressor station called Kompreshaus is turning into a business incubator. 🏗️ Six municipalities across Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, and Montenegro have new blueprints for turning brownfields into opportunity. And 17 partners from 7 countries proved that reindustrialisation doesn't have to mean starting from scratch.
Tomorrow, we close this chapter with the ReInd-BBG Final Conference. 🎉 It's a moment to celebrate everything the team built and everyone who believed that the future of industry might already be right there, just waiting to be rediscovered.

🚺✨ New recommendations from WIN Project are out and we really think you should take a look! 👇

Many industrial towns in the Danube Region are called "left behind" places 😔 but they have huge potential and women are right in the center of it! 💪

The WIN Project 🔴 https://interreg-danube.eu/projects/win, just published new policy recommendations based on research in 7 pilot regions across Central and Eastern Europe.

What did they find? 🔍
📉 Higher unemployment for women
⏳ More precarious, part-time jobs
👔 Traditional, rigid workplace cultures
🧸 Big lack of childcare infrastructure

Not fair, and also not smart - these regions cannot afford to lose this much talent, especially now with demographic decline and labour shortages growing bigger every year ⚠️

But there is good news too 🙌 The recommendations give real, concrete steps - for EU 🇪🇺, national 🏛️, regional and local level 🤝 - plus links to good practice examples already tested in the field!

The real lesson here isn't that SteelCityZen predicted the future but it's that they checked before assuming they had. 👇

SteelCityZen https://interreg-danube.eu/projects/steelcityzen set out to build a Career and Guidance Center in Slezská Ostrava for one reason: the local steel plant was about to lay off a ton of people, and the region needed somewhere to catch everyone falling through.

By the time the center was ready to open? The job market had basically already sorted itself out.

Kind of like building an emergency room and showing up to find the emergency's already over. 🏥

Good thing someone actually checked before opening the doors. A quick "status quo analysis" right before launch (sounds boring, was not boring 😄) showed the people who needed help weren't steelworkers anymore. They were parents returning after parental leave, people nearing retirement needing new skills, young people looking for their first job.

So the center pivoted and now it's actually helping the people walking in. ✅

But here's what's still unresolved: the center was built to handle a real crisis, not just a normal day. A calm one-year pilot can't prove it holds up under real pressure.

Here's the part we think is genuinely worth celebrating though: no single region can generate that proof on its own timeline. 🌍

And this is exactly the moment where transnational cooperation shows its real value. This is not only about partners sharing branding or meeting at the same conferences, it is about partners across the Danube Region building similar centers, each on their own timeline, so that if one of them will face a real shock one day, this experience becomes the answer for everyone. Ostrava's gap gets filled by someone else's journey later on. This is the model working exactly as it should. 🤝

No single region has enough experience alone. Together, across the borders, the fuller picture will show up eventually and this is not a limitation of the programme, this is the actual point of it.

🌊 The Danube just hit a record low.

As Europe swelters through repeated heatwaves, the Danube - Europe's lifeline for over 80 million people is drying up fast. Near Budapest, the river fell so low that the legendary "Rock of Starvation" (Ínség-szikla) resurfaced. In the past, this rock only appeared when crops failed and hunger followed. 🥹

Thanks to the Danube Water Balance project https://interreg-danube.eu/projects/danube-water-balance, co-financed by the Interreg Danube Region Programme, we know just how serious it is:

🌡️ Record-breaking heat across the basin this summer
🌧️ One of the driest April–July periods in over 30 years
📉 River flows in July 2026 lower than any year since 1990
🚢 Shipping disrupted, a nuclear plant shut down, ecosystems under stress

This is exactly why cross-border cooperation matters - water crosses borders, and so must our response. 💧
